3. OBJECTIVE
To promote the welfare of disabled people within Allerdale and West Coast District.
4. SUMMARY OF MAIN ACTIVITIES
In delivering our activities this year the trustees have had regard to Charity Commission guidance on public benefit. The focus of our activities remains to provide a range of quality services to disabled people, their families and carers, enabling greater accessibility and integration. We promote equality and social justice through information and empowerment.
-
Information service gives advice on any disability related issue to people with disabilities, their families and carers
-
Assisting people to complete welfare benefit forms.
-
Drop in sessions for physically disabled adults and their carers.
5. ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
Our Welfare Benefits Service delivers advice and support to people with any disability from older people to the parents of infants and their families and carers, regardless of whether due to age, physical, mental, or learning disability. This specialist service is tailored and bespoke to the needs of each individual and guides them from application through medicals, appeals and 1st tier tribunals. There is no other tailored advice service offering this in the area.
People with disabilities face financial and social marginalisation, the need to get support without facing barriers whether physical or attitudinal is paramount. Our services mean they are not only better off financially but the detrimental effects of money worries and loneliness are reduced and they have improved well-being and quality of life. This financial year we have responded to 1053 inquiries and helped clients to generate income by claiming benefit entitlements of £6.1 million.
Throughout the last year with lockdowns, then restrictions and finally getting back to normal operations, we have continued to support our clients and members to the best of our abilities. We know this has been greatly appreciated by the feedback we have had, reviews left on the internet and the many many cards we have received.
All our services are only possible due to the dedication and knowledge of our staff and the huge contribution made by volunteers who give their time, skills and commitment freely. Our sincere thanks to all of them.
6. PLANS FOR FUTURE PERIODS
We envisage being even busier moving forward due to both Copeland Disability Forum and the Disability Association of Carlisle and Eden closing at the end of March. This combined with the advent of the new Cumberland Authority gives us the ideal opportunity to explore options around expanding our area of operation.
Plans are underway for us to move our location within the Community Centre to the old library. This would offer us a much larger area, with the scope to offer more to our members and a better service to everyone. The premises needs some major works to make it fit for purpose and we are delighted to have had the support of the Cumbria Exchange to access professional advice we needed, and the offer of donated labour. We are currently £10k short of the total project costs of £53k required to proceed, but we are very optimistic this will come to fruition.
We will continue to work with the Sellafield’s Bedrock Basics programme that has been hugely beneficial to us, providing support advice and priceless training.
7. FINANCIAL REVIEW
Total funds carried forward on 31[st] March 2022 were £7,674.59 Thanks to Cumbria Community Foundation and the Pappagallino fund, and Allerdale Borough Council for their grants and continued support to the organisation.
Our thanks also go to the Postcode Neighbourhood Trust for salary cost support, and Cumbria County Councils Active Cumbria fund for providing fitness equipment suitable for our members. Finally but by no means least thanks to The Hadfield Trust who funding has provided height adjustable tables, new chairs and a range of equipment to improve the experience for our members in the drop in.
Fund raising and obtaining grants must continue to be a high priority following these last few years of instability to ensure continuation of our services to the disabled community.
