Chairman’s Report 2023/24

The hall remains busy and there is a steady demand for the use of the hall for children’s parties and other family events. The hall floor was replaced by local company LNC in August 2023 and repainting completed in December 2023.

CCTV cameras were replaced and are now maintained by VOG Alarm Systems from Barry.

Dinas Powys Community Cinema, with its licensed bar, Joe’s ice cream, and a carefully selected programme, continues to be a regular monthly event for many residents and we have a loyal audience. Dinas Powys Primary School once again joined us for its Christmas screening in December and has already booked December 2024. I am very grateful to our volunteers who help run the community cinema. Without their help and dedication this venture could not continue and we are always looking for new volunteers prepared to commit one Saturday afternoon and evening per month to this venture.

With its good parking facilities and pleasant surroundings, the hall is continuing to prove a popular venue for community and private events. Fund raising events, including Rock and Chips , DPVC Quiz Nights and Christmas coffee mornings, have been hosted. Murchfield Community Centre is used by a wide range of regular user groups and for diverse one-off bookings. Regular users include the Childminders, the Wednesday Afternoon Club, Taekwondo, Aerobics, Tuesday Makers, Liberty Dance, DPVC’s Afternoon Community Club, and the Vale of Glamorgan Parkinson’s Support Group. The hall is also used regularly by Dinas Powys Voluntary Concern for its Memory Café, which incorporates an older persons’ art group, run by volunteers and a weekly soup lunch attracting an average number of 25 every Monday.

DPVC has its office at the rear of the building and has used of the hall for volunteer training, AGM and coffee mornings.

I would like to express thanks for all the support the Association receives from our local community, the Community and Vale Councils, and from our dedicated and supportive Management Committee. We welcomed two new Trustees, Jane Sissons and Sharon Burke. They have both used the hall for many years as local childminders.

Murchfield Community Association is in a strong position to look forward to another year of service to the local community.

Managing bookings for the Hall requires a great deal of dedication, and I would like to thank Judith for the hard work she puts in to ensure that the hall is run and managed so efficiently. I would also like to express my thanks to Kevin Parsons and David Knevett of the Vale of Glamorgan Council for the support they give the Management Committee. My thanks go to David Thomas, who has agreed to be our independent examiner of the MCA accounts.

Aims and Objectives

Murchfield Community Association is a registered charity run by volunteers that manages Murchfield Community Centre on behalf of the Vale of Glamorgan Council. It has responsibility for day-to-day management and ensuring that the Centre is self-funding. As a community association one of its main aims is to provide facilities, in the form of the Community Centre, that enable the residents of Dinas Powys to take part in activities that

We do this by bringing together local authorities and other organisations and maintaining and managing the Community Centre with the object of improving the quality of life for the people of Dinas Powys and surrounding area.

How we would normally achieve this

The Centre provides a range of activities and regular long-term bookings run by other organisations and individuals. These cover a wide range of interests and include.

5

Murchfield Community Centre is also the home of Dinas Powys Voluntary Concern, a local charity that helps the elderly and provides transport and befriending services through volunteers and two adapted vehicles.

As an Association we also arrange our own events for the community. We believe, as trustees, in offering a range of cultural experiences that are not catered for elsewhere in the village. By organising our own events not only do we achieve our objective of improving the quality of live for residents but we raise much needed funds to continue improving the Centre.

Our events and activities include

The Centre is open to all and is available throughout the year for individual and casual lettings. Numerous children’s parties are held at weekends and the Welsh Blood Service book donor sessions twice a year. It is also used for local and national elections as a polling station.

The Trustees work closely with the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Dinas Powys Community Council to provide a safe, secure and welcoming facility for the whole of Dinas Powys to enjoy.

Finance Report

The accounts presented here are for the financial year from 1[st] April 2023 to 31[st] March 2024. We thank David Thomas for confirming their accuracy.

We have been able to keep our hire rate at a figure of £10 per hr. Although this is one of the lowest rates of any halls in the village it still covers the majority of our expenses. In the second year of party bookings at the new rate of £50 numbers have remained steady.

Our regular hirers contribute £15,000 per year and we are almost at capacity.

Replacing the hall floor was our main expenditure and this is included in the Hall Misc and equipment category and totalled £19,179.84. This was partly paid for by the Vale of Glamorgan buildings insurance to the sum of £17,097.60. We took the opportunity to replace the floor in the chair cupboard which explains the extra amount paid to LNC.

Decorating of the toilets, entrance hall and main hall totalled £915.38. It is intended to repaint again after the hall roof has been replaced at the end of 2024.

Our utility bills have increased but not as much as they could have. 5-year contracts were taken out in 2021 so lower rates were secured. Monthly payments have remained the same for gas, and electricity is a variable direct debit. The Football Club and Bowls Club continue to re pay their electricity usage.

We took advantage of slightly higher interest rate and transferred £20,000 to a 35 day notice account in September 2023.

We end the year with a total of £51,568.09 over our 3 accounts.
