Knowle & Dorridge Lions Club Report and accounts for year ended 30 June 2023
Introduction
This report and accounts prepared by the Knowle & Dorridge Lions Club continues our policy to give the reader a better understanding of the activities of the charity and the manner in which the funds, collected from various events held during the year, are distributed. It combines information for the year ended 30 June 2023 with comparison figures for the previous year.
Trustees and officers
The Trustees for the year were the President – Stuart Davis, the Secretary – Jamie Walsh, Treasurer – Ian Gedge and Immediate Past President – Adrian Harris. Each year the club selects three of its members to fill the roles of President, Secretary and Treasurer and in turn they become the Trustees for the year along with the Immediate Past President. An existing officer can serve for more than one year or may serve again in the future in the same or an alternative role. There is no limit on the period an officer may serve although all members are encouraged to serve as an officer of the Club.
The officers for 2023/24 will be, President – Bob Thurtle, Vice President – Tony Gee Secretary – Adrian Harris and Treasurer – Ian Gedge. Stuart Davis has left the Club so will not serve as Immediate Past President.
Bankers
During the year, the Club maintained bank accounts with the following provider:
CAF Bank Limited 25 Kings Hill Avenue Kings Hill West Malling ME19 4JQ
There were two accounts with CAF Bank Limited, one current account and one deposit account. The Club also has a separate administration account not included within these accounts.
The report and accounts include this introduction, a report from the President – Stuart Davis, and the accounting figures themselves. Following the financial statements are the accounting policies and notes to the accounts. The final page includes a useful link to the Knowle and Dorridge Lions Club website, where details of the Lions meetings and the planned programme for the following year can be found.

Knowle & Dorridge Lions Club Report and accounts for year ended 30 June 2023
Report of the President
Knowle & Dorridge Lions have continued to serve the communities we cover, indeed as we have from the Chartering of our club in 1976.
During the past year we have welcomed two new members but in June four members left leaving our membership at 12. Efforts to increase our membership continue.
Our main fund raising activities would not be the success they are without the additional help of residents, who come out and give their time to assist us in running these events.
Two of our main fund raising activities are picking up again after the break due to Covid-19.
At the beginning of the year our Club meetings had started to get back to normal, and now we are back to full meetings at the Greswolde Arms Hotel. My thanks to them for their continued support and for letting us use their rooms for our meetings.
We continue to give service in the community, not just through fund raising activities, but contributing to the well being of our area. During the year we carried out regular litter picks in Knowle and the surrounding area. We also supported flu and covid clinics at our local surgeries.
Fund raising
Our fund raising started with the Festive Walk from Dorridge Village Hall in December when around 600 participants enabled us to raise nearly £2,000 for our charitable activities. This was followed in March by our popular Easter Egg Raffle for customers of the Black Boy where we gave £600 to Age UK Solihull and retained almost £600 for our charitable work.
The year would not be complete without the Knowle Fun Run which took place in May from Arden Academy. Numbers were beginning to reach the pre-pandemic level and that enabled us to raise over £15,000 for the chosen charities and our ongoing charitable work. We are also grateful to the many volunteers without whom the event could not take place. There were over 100 volunteers helping with delivery of Fun Run programmes, marshalling the course and setting up on the day.
Fund distribution
During the year we were able to make payments to various charitable organisations including Lions International, finance our Youth Travel Bursary and run our two senior events, the coach trip to Weston Super Mare and the tea party at Knowle Royal British Legion. In total we paid out £22,650.91.
Socials
In addition to our monthly Club meetings we hold a number of social events for members and their friends. This year we had a visit to Hook Norton Brewery on Saturday 20 August when eight members and partners toured the facility and sampled various beers followed by a meal. A number of us attended the Buddy Holly tribute at the Core Theatre on 22 October. This was followed by Afternoon Tea at the Arden Hotel on the Coventry Road on 3 December enjoyed by a number of Lions and partners. My thanks to Lion Bob who organised these events.
We ended the year (well really the next year) in July with our visit to the Pétanque Club at Blossomfield Club where Tony Robson was declared the winner and we enjoyed a meal in the club house afterwards.

The Way Ahead
Many organisations like ours are always needing more members so that our work in the community can continue, as it has since 1976.
Unfortunately, for me, during my year as President I have been unable to attend most of the meetings and fund raising activities due to illness. I would like to place on record my thanks to my two Vice Presidents Lion Bob Thurtle, Lion Richard Buckley and the officer’s for keeping the Club on an even keel.
Finally I wish to thank all my fellow Lions for the tremendous support I have received. I have enjoyed my term as President and I am pleased to be able to pass the baton onto Bob Thurtle who becomes President for 2023/24. I wish him well in his role.

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Knowle and Dorridge Lions Club
I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 30 June 2023, which are set out on pages 5 to 9.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act
have not been met; or
(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
