Chair of Trustees Foreword

I love volunteering with the 16[th] Morecambe. In my second year as Chair of our fantastic Trustee Board, I have witnessed our brilliant team of adult volunteers furnish our young people with skills for life through delivery of a varied, adventurous and exciting programme. Inspiring. Highlights for me this year include;

Annual Report & Annual General Meeting Agenda

Our squirrel section has now been open for two full years! The leaders have gone above and beyond to make this year better than the last and continue with parent support to keep the group open and thriving.

We are completing our two-year programme that we have successfully got into place, completing our Be Active badge at the start of the year. We had Morecambe Firefighters visit as part of our Local Superhero badge and hope to make these regular visits with the station as the squirrels had such good fun learning more about the Firefighters. We then learnt more about each other with the All About Me Challenge Badge and showed what makes us unique and special. We completed our Brilliant Builder badge following this and began our Super Chef badge. This was a personal favourite of mine as the squirrels had to complete this badge by cooking a meal at home!

The response and support we had from parents and carers really made this badge extra special as not only did the squirrels try new food but they showed they can help at home!

We also completed our Feel Good badge which is always a favourite to make a den out of the parachute and completed St Paddy’s Day yoga led by our Young Leader - Hedgehog. We then completed another favourite of the leaders - Exciting Experiments! This year we took the experiments outside hoping they were bigger and better than before, we had the usual hiccups but can call this another success. Towards the end of the year we have Go Wild planned and Explore Outdoors.

Throughout the year the squirrels have helped us make various decorations for fundraising for group, this varied from making bat decorations for our Halloween Party to helping run a stall and raise money for the group at the Christmas Fayre!

We linked our Get Creative badge in with Valentine’s Day this year and Lent by decorating stones to represent things we’d give up to be kind to others. Owl led brilliant sessions for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and throughout the year, teaching the squirrels about St George’s Day and VE Day. We had several successful Church Parade’s this year and will continue to attend these next year with the support of parents and guardians.

Finally I would like to mention our squirrels that achieved their Acorn Award this year, Oliver L who has shown amazing development from starting with us two years ago, he achieved this award by attending almost every session and catching up with any that he missed at home. He really deserves this award as he became a Squirrel the younger Squirrels looked up to. We are so proud of Oliver and hope to follow his journey throughout scouting at 16th Morecambe.

Alder Beavers meet on a Monday and Willow Beavers meet on a Thursday at 6pm-7pm. We currently have 45 members across the 2 colonies and with a steady stream coming up from Squirrels and a healthy waiting list. Currently at 21 in each group and we anticipate being full into next year.

Andy, Simmi and Harmy have successfully navigated there first full year running Alder Beavers follow the departures of Jen, Sue and Andrew, who still remain involved with activities over the year such as Founders day and the ever popular sausage sizzle. They have been helped by young leaders Edward and Adam.

Willow Beavers is being run by Debs, Jolanta and Leanne. Supported by young leaders Charlie, Oliver and also Will. They were helped up until Easter by Rob and the ever reliable Tony, who is available as and when needed.

The young leaders also took charge of sessions during this term.

The spring term focused on the Teamwork challenge badge. Beavers for the builder badge designed, collected materials and built some fantastic forts, cars and an impressive robot. With regards the disability badge, beavers learned feel letters in brail, use sign language to spell out their own names and had an inspirational visit from the guide dogs association.

The term ended with a visit from Mandy Seddon with her challenge boxes which kept the beavers entertained.

The summer term has been focused on the Outdoors challenge including a visit to the beach, axe throwing as part of Father’s Day. A sports night is planned and the term will conclude with an orienteering session at Williamson's park.

Thank you to all the parents who came along and helped on the parent rota or helped run a session, we are all volunteers and are grateful for those extra skills people can bring to help us run a fun programme, if you have talents or contacts that you think our Beavers would enjoy, please do let us know.

What a year so far! Here are some of our highlights - The Cubs started their new year with a Sausage Sizzle back in September and we were blessed with the most glorious weather that evening. October saw us learning mindfulness and getting creative making our bird feeders and terrariums. November was particularly special for us when we welcomed local Scouting legend Joyce Brooks for an evening where the Cubs learnt about 16[th] Morecambe over the last 60 years! December was a great month for the Cubs to show their musical talents whilst working on their Musician’s badge and we definitely have some aspiring musicians amongst us!

The new year saw us celebrate Burn’s Night with haggis, neeps and tatties as well as tossing pancakes before we jetted off on our first Spring Camp to the Fylde Scout Activity Centre in Lytham. What an actionpacked weekend that was – fencing, climbing, gun carriage challenge and adventure golf!

The Cubs also completed work on their Space badge and we were delighted to have our former Cub and now Explorer Scout, Charlie White, join us for the evening who brought along his state-of-the-art telescope to show the Cubs and learn all about constellations and planets.

With the weather now improving, the Cubs were now able to get outside more and enjoyed building campfires and cooking s’mores.

Another special guest was Lune Valley Beekeepers who came to teach the Cubs all about the different bees, how the bees make their honey, look at bee frames and let us try on beekeeper outfits.

We still have our evening at the Crabbing Pool to look forward to, together with our annual football tournament before the end of the summer. Another fantastic year from our Cub Scouts!

The last year has been a very successful one for the Scout Section. We placed highly in the Bowlander Expedition Competition, Crew Challenge and also placed highly in the Lonsdale Knight Hike.

We spent our summer camp last July at Red Rose in Westmorland county showground. The scouts got to experience the very best of what the Lake District and the north west has to offer with activities such as canoeing, mountain biking and a day visit to Chester. There were more than 4000 participants which made for a diverse and enjoyable camp with scouts from around the world.

. We have participated in several Lonsdale District events, including the dragnet in Silverdale, Knight activity, PL/APL day and most recently County Rally, where almost 1000 West Lancs Scouts descended on

Waddecar for a weekend of fun, freedom, friendship and adventure.

We are very much looking forward to the remainder of our summer programme which includes kayaking on the Lune and a sausage sizzle.

As with the other Sections, the Scout section have also had leadership changes this year with gaining of Sarah.

We have four excellent Young Leaders – Josh, Dan, Alex and Arman supporting us, but we are desperate for more help if anyone fancies joining the adventure!

Group Lead Volunteer’s Report

It’s been another great year for 16th Morecambe Scout Group. Our volunteers across the group have run brilliant programs each week, held some great events, been on amazing camps and even created new fundraisers for the group. All of which contribute to making our group the best in the district (ok so I'm a little biased, but I do believe it's true).

I could go on about all the things the group has done since the last AGM but this will already be long enough so I shall just mention one thing the group did that I still think about today. Our first Christmas fair, it was created by our newly formed fundraiser/events team. It could not have gone any better, we had not only our group’s family and friends, but the wider local community join us too.

During this we had stalls, games and a cakes and brews on offer we also honored a legend when we renamed our HQ after him, Alan Hague. We had his wife and family join us for unveiling of the 2 plaques. He did so much for our group and the wider scouting world and was a great loss when he passed. We shall remember him for many years to come.

…continued

Our group would not be what it is today without the hard work our volunteers put in and without you (the parents/guardians) supporting us in the way you do. So, a massive thank you to all of you!

If anyone is thinking about helping a little more, please let me or another volunteer know as the more help we get the better we become. I’m not sure if everyone has an idea of the various roles across the group both front line and in the background. So I shall briefly mention a couple of the roles across our group, ranging from:

I have just essentially said this for that last role example, but we are volunteers, so you dictate when you can/can’t volunteer. Some are more labour intensive, some are more admin related. I am a big believer in “you get out what you put in”.

It is extremely rewarding to see how the young people grow through their time in our scout group, and to see the difference in them while using the life skills we try to instill in them. Please think about joining us on our group's adventure.

Thank you all!
