Annual Report & Annual General Meeting Agenda
2022 Annual Report & AGM
Chairman’s Foreword
Welcome to this year’s Annual General Meeting and thank you very much for attending. Whilst there will, out of necessity, be some formality to the meeting the leaders and executive members have worked hard to create an entertaining and enjoyable event so please mingle with them,, engage and ask questions or even let us have ideas and suggestions that you think might benefit the group.
Leaders reports make interesting reading and, once again, show how active, inclusive and comprehensive the sections have been in 2022 and 2023 so far. Being Chairman of such a dedicated, enthusiastic and responsible group has been both a pleasure and immense learning curve.
Sadly my role as Chairman will come to an end at today’s meeting. Having served over 25 years with my beloved 16[th] the time has come for a new steward with new initiatives. I would like to think that I made a small contribution to steadying the ship in difficult times but I leave her now in great shape and in safe hands ready and “prepared” for her next adventures!
Good luck and thank you for giving me the privilege to serve as your Chairman

Annual Report & Annual General Meeting Agenda
Squirrels is new to 16th Morecambe and is open for 4-6 year olds, we are the youngest group in scouting and we’ve had a successful two terms trying to navigate a new group. Since starting we have successfully completed several badges varying from the local superhero badge to air activities. Each badge has offered fun new games to learn and difficult tasks to overcome to help the squirrels at home and at school and nursery. We are looking forward to doing more badges with the squirrels whilst continuing to teach some early life skills. We’ve had guest speaker fire fighter Jeff come in to teach the squirrels how to ring the emergency services if there’s a fire. Emma from the local nursery Sparrows came down and helped the squirrels learn how to disperse their energy and learn the colours of the rainbow song.
We look forward to a jam packed year full of new activities where we will continue completing badges and keeping the squirrels entertained with new and exciting challenges.
A big thanks to all of our parent helpers that have stayed and helped when we’ve needed it! And thank you for supporting our stepping stones to being the best Squirrel group in Lonsdale! Of course thank you to our Leaders that volunteer their time every week, Steph, Harminder, Sophie, Alice and our newest leader Laura. And a massive thank you to our young leader Lily for being a great role model to the squirrels.
We are currently at full capacity and have a waiting list so we can’t wait to see new faces begin their scouting journey!

Alder Beavers meet on a Monday and Willow Beavers meet on a Thursday at 6pm-7pm. We have 19 Beavers per colony. The leaders on Monday are Jen Andrew and Sue and we are very pleased to welcome Koby Cheeseman as a leader. Koby has been a young leader with us and his ‘youth’ and support has been an essential part of running our Beaver sessions. Thursday Beavers is run by Debs Jolanta and Leanne. We also have 3 young leaders Oliver, Charlie and Edward and we are grateful for their help. Parents help on the rota once/twice a term allowing them to support the sessions and see what Beavers is all about-thank you.
Last Autumn we completed the Money Skills badge. The Beavers learnt lots of facts about money and some ideas on how to save money, they designed a bank note and decorated a money box. They had the opportunity to either complete the pet lover badge or hobby badge. They showed confidence standing in front of the peers and talking about their chosen subject.
In spring, the Beavers worked on their Team challenge and experimenter badge. They made, painted and exploded volcanoes! Debs made a fleur de lis for our notice board with comments from the Beavers about what makes a good friend. We grew cress in yoghurt pots and played team games blindfolded. We had a very informative visit to Lancaster Town hall arranged by Jolanta Cross.
The summer term is an excuse to get outside as much as possible with visits to the beach to build sandcastles, a trip to Happy Mount Park to look at the wildlife and play on the play area, sausage sizzle at Silverhelme for 100 adults and children, tomahawk/angel throwing for Father’s day, water games and sports day. One of our Beaver parents kindly showed us his birds of prey. Thank you Robert Carr – the Beavers loved being so close to the birds. We also had Beaver sleepover, at Silverhelme, in May, for 15 children which was a great success, with many of the Beavers bravely spending their first night away from family.
We’re pleased to have handed out many badges, each term, thanks to the Beavers’ hard work and we’re very proud of our 13 Bronze award recipients over the last 12 months and our 2 ‘Beavers of the Year’ 2022 who were Reuben Moss and Sadie Webster.
Scouting is a volunteer organisation and it wouldn’t run without the dedication of the leaders who plan and run
sessions every week. We are always looking for help – could you be a leader? There are volunteers behind the scenes too- if you would like to know how you can add to the group without committing to being a leader please let us know. Perhaps you could help on our social committee.
Beavers is about Fun and Friends and we’ve had a great year together learning skills for life.

An action packed year with Cubs kicked off with a visit to Morecambe Lifeboat Station. The Cubs learnt all about how the crew keep us safe in the bay, how the lifeboat and all its equipment works and even tried on the lifeboat crew’s uniform.
Later on in the year, the Cubs celebrated Diwali, making their own Diwali lights and learning all about other religious festivals and celebrations from other countries.
In November, our invited guests from Red Rose Karate introduced the Cubs to Karate under the expert guidance of Sensei Gordon Wilson and the Cubs gaining their Martial Arts badge.
The New Year got off to a flying start with Apache Akela Donna Pearson receiving her Award of Merit in recognition of all her hard work and dedication in Scouting. Congratulations Akela and very well deserved! Later on that month, the Cubs celebrated Burns Night and sampled “haggis, neeps and tatties” and Scottish country dancing to finish off the evening.
February meant Winter Camp at Waddecar for the Cubs with a busy weekend rifle shooting, bouldering and high ropes to name a few.
One of the many highlights of the year was our behinds the scenes visit to the Morecambe Winter Gardens we were learnt about the ongoing restoration project and famous names from the past who have performed at the theatre. With the warmer weather, the Cubs were able to enjoy the outdoors and we were thrilled to have guests from Swallows and Amazons Forest School join us for an evening where the Cubs leant about how to identify trees from their leaves and bark and enjoyed s’mores on an open fire to end the evening.
May saw us celebrate King Charles’ Coronation with a fun-filled party and games. We were also blessed with
fantastic weather for our annual sausage sizzle at Silverhelme where we were proud to present the Silver Award to our older Cubs who have worked so hard and also to invest are younger Cubs into our packs.
Our year ends with our annual football tournament between Apache and Sioux packs and back to Waddecar for our first visit to the tented village where we will be busy with activities including kayaking, archery, climbing and abseiling.
On behalf of the Leadership team, thank you to all the parents and carers for your fantastic support this year.

The Scout Section have had another busy year packed full of adventure and challenges. We currently have 40 Scouts across the two troops.
We started the year with the competition season, achieving first place in both the Lonsdale Knight Hike and Waddecar Crew Challenge. We also had teams entered into the West Lancs Bowlander, and although both teams did well, we sadly didn't place.
The Scout Section have ramped up 18 nights away this year so far, the highlight being the fun packed Red Rose Jamboree. We are very much looking forward to our upcoming London trip in the summer, camping near Hemel Hempstead and visiting the Harry Potter Studio Tour, London Dungeons and the Tower of London, The Natural History Museum and all the major sightseeing stops.

Group Scout Leader’s Report
I find it hard to believe it has nearly been a year since I took on the Group Scout Leader role at 16th Morecambe, it has gone so quickly. I am immensely proud of our ever growing group, we have continued to be the largest in the district. I don’t think I really need to point this out, but the programmes that we as a group have been able to provide for the young people across the sections have been life changing and instilling life skills, as well as being fun and active. On a personal note, the transition into this role has gone smoothly which has only been possible with the support of our amazing leadership teams across the sections and our unsung heroes of our exec committee. So will say it now, a massive thank you to all our group leadership teams and exec committee members. All of your efforts have kept our group the best in the district (in my only slightly biased opinion anyway).
Since the last AGM, there has been one massive change within the structure of our group. We opened a new section and now have a Squirrel Drey!! For those that aren't aware, this section is before Beavers, for young people aged 4-6. I would like to really thank the leaders that stepped up to help create and lead this new section, they took on this new adventure and have absolutely smashed it. They have fairly recently increased their numbers to allow more squirrels to join, and have hopefully found a new leader to join them on this adventure.
That nicely leads me into recruitment. For those of you who have been to our AGM's before, this will come as no surprise, but we need volunteers. Either as a leader or as part of the behind the scenes committees, it is extremely rewarding knowing that whatever your role, your time and actions help to give great experiences to our young people.
We urgently require an Assistant Section Leader for our Apache Cubs, who meet on Tuesdays. This is a very rewarding role, and training and support are provided. Please talk to myself or any of the Cub leaders to find out more details. The best part of being a leader is watching the young people progress through the section and grow as young people, utilising the skills they develop along the way.
We also need new volunteers for the behind the scenes committees. Our exec would really benefit from some more members (they usually only meet once every couple of months apart from when it's leading up to a big group event like this, but even then it's still only once a month), but what I would really like to find volunteers for is to create a sub-committee for fund raising. This sub-committee would ease the load on the sections leadership teams when equipment need replacing or new equipment needs purchasing to allow our sections to bring the best programmes possible.
Will finish on a personal highlight that helped remind me why I volunteer, a scout was out with his family when his sister got into a bad accident, he not only knew what to do regarding first aid but kept himself calm and help keep his sister and younger brother calm. These are skills that his parents have said could only have come from his time in our group. So this is a good reminder for all our leaders and potential leaders (hint hint) why we volunteer journey!

BECOME AN ADULT VOLUNTEER WITH THE 16[TH] MORECAMBE, YOU WON’T REGRET IT, IT’S GOOD FOR YOU!
Volunteering with young people
Team player? Love supporting young people? Great at planning?
Most of our volunteers work directly with young people aged 6-18 through our Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer groups, known as sections – helping young people gain skills for life through activities and adventures.
Working in teams, they might:
-
Welcome young people and families to sessions and events
-
Make sure everyone's safe, supported, included and having fun
-
Help to plan and lead activities
-
Get involved with days out, camps and expeditions
-
Share and learn skills – from coding to cake decorating to canoeing
-
Celebrate young people's achievements big and small
No previous experience with young people? No problem. Whether you'd like to help out week-after-week or whenever-you-can, we provide training, learning opportunities and cups of tea – every step of the way.
Making it all happen
Want to make a big impact behind the scenes? Your time and skills can make a difference in so many ways.
Not all volunteers work directly with young people. Locally, regionally and nationally, many help out in other ways.
Working in teams, they might:
-
Get the best out of volunteers, using their people and leadership skills
-
Spread the word about Scouts to attract new members
-
Help with admin, fundraising, finances, operations or governance
-
Keep everything running smoothly on the ground – from serving tea and coffee, helping to tidy up after meetings or sessions, driving or keeping

Accounts for Year Ending 31[st] December 2022
Treasurer’s Summary Report;
In 2022 we carried forward an income v expenditure deficit of £2956, in part this is the result of the loss of the Christmas Post fund raiser.
Our main source of funds other than subs is Gift Aid. Please ensure that you access Scout Manager and sign up to Gift Aid or mark it decline. Marking ‘decline’ makes the process much more straight forward. The good news is that Paul Anderton is gathering a team to organise some fund raising activities. The accounts have been signed off once again by our auditor, Lisa Stott, having carried out a full audit. On a personal note I will stand down as treasurer, at the latest, at the next AGM. The group are looking to fill the role sooner as it is possible that I will move to Scotland before the next AGM.
