YORK ARCHAEOLOGICAL TRUST FOR EXCAVATION AND RESEARCH LIMITED Extent to which the audSt was considered capable of detecting irregularities, includin8 fraud Irrègularities. including fraud. are instances of non-compliance with laws and regulations. We identified and assessed the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements from irregularities, whether due to fraud or error, and di5CU55ed these between our audit team members. We then designed and performed audlt pfocedures responsive to those risks, includlng obtainlng audit evldence sufficient and appropriate to provlde a basis for our opinion. We obtained an understanding of the legal and regulatory frameworks within which the charitable cornpany operates, focusing on those laws and re£ulations that have a direct effect on ihe determlnatlon of material amount5 and dlsclosures In the financial 5tatement5. The laws and regulations we con51dered In thls context were the Companies Act 2006, the Charities Act 2011, the Charities and Truslee Investment (Scotlandl Act 2CQS together with the Charities SORP IFRS 1021. We a5se55ed the required cornpliance with these laws and re8ulations as part of our audit procedures on the related financlal statement Items. In additbon, we considered provisions of other laws and regulations that do not have a diTect effect on the financial statements but compllance wlth which ml8ht be fundamental to Ihe charitable company's ability lo operate or to avoid material penalty. We a150 consldered the opportunltie5 and Incentlves that may exlst wlthln the charltable company for fraud. The key laws and re8ulatlon5 we considered in thSs context were General Dats Protection Regulatlon, health and safety le81513tSon and employee legislation. Auditin8 Standards lirnit the required audlt procedures to Idenllfy non-compliance with these laws and re8ulations to enqulry of the Trustees and other mana&ement and Inspettion of regularory and legal correspondence, If any. We Identlfled the 8reate5t rlsk of rnaterlal Impact on the financlal stalernents ffom Irre8ularltles, It)cludlng fraud, to be the override of Controls by management. Our audit procedures to respond to these rlsk5 Included enquiries of mana8ement and the Finance & Audit Committee about their own identification and assessment of the risks of irregularities, sample testin8 on the postln8 of journals, revSewSnB accountln8 eslimates for bla5es. revlewln8 re8ulatorv correspondence wlth the Charlty Commlsslon. and readlng m5nules of meellngs of those charged wlth 8overnance. Owln8 to the inherent Ilmltations of an audlt, there Is an unavoldable rlsk that we may not have detected sorne materlal mlsstatement5 in the financlal slatements. even though we have properly planned and performed our audit In accordance with auditln8 Standards. For example, the further removed non-compllance wlth laws and re8ulatlons 1Srre8ularltlesl15 from the events and tran5artlon5 reflected In the financial Statements, the le55 Ilkely the Inherently Ilmlted procedures requlrèd by auditln8 Standards would identify it. In addition, as wlth any audlt, there remalned hlgher rlsk of non-deteclion of irregularities, as these may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omisslons, misrepresentation5, or the overrlde of internal controls. We are not responsible for preventin8 non-compliance and cannot be expected to detect non-compllance wlth all laws and reBulatlons. Use of our report Thls report is made solely to the charltable companvs members, as a body, In accordance wlth Chapter 3 of Part 16 of the Companies Act 2006, and to the charitable company's tru51ees, as a body, in accordance wlth RegulatSon 10 of the Charities Accounts Iscotlandl Regulatlons 2006. Our audlt work has been undertaken so that we might state to the charitable company'5 members those matter5 we are requlred to stale to them In an audltor's report and for no other purpose. Cash at Bankandln hand Cash at bank and in hand Includes cash and short term hl8hly IlquSd investments wlth a short maturlty of three months or less from the date of acquisition or openlng of the deposit or slmllar account. Credltors ondprovtslons Credltors and provlslons are reco8nlsed where the Charlty has a present obllgatlon resulting Irorn a past event that will probably result In the transfer of funds to a third party and the amoijnt due to settle the obligatio can be measured or estlmated reliably. Creditors and provislons are normally recognlsed at their sÈtilement amount after allowlng for any trade dlscounts due. Flnanclul Instrnments The Charity only ha5 financial assets and flnancial Ilabilltle5 of a klnd that quallfy as basic financlal Instruments. Basic financial Instruments are Initially recognlsed at transaction value and subsequently measured at thelT settlement value wlth the exception of bank loan5 which are subsequently measured at amortlsed cost uslng the effectivè Interest method. Penslons The Charlty tsperate5 a defined contribution pension scheme and the pension charge rÈpresents the amounts payable by the Charity to the fund In fespe¢t of the year. The Charity particlpates In the North Yorkshlre Penslon Seheme, a defined benefits penslon scheme, and the pension charge Is based on a full actuarial valuation as at 31 March 2022. The assets of the scheme are held separately from those of the Charlty. Penslon s¢heme liabilities are measured on an actuarial basis using a prolectÈd unit method and are discounted to thelr PTe5enl value using a discount rate of 4.8%. Pension scheme assets are valued at market value at the balance sheet date. The pension scheme deficit 15 recognised in full on the balance sheet. 22

YORK ARCHAEOLOGICAL TRUST FOR EXCAVATION AND RESEARCH LIMTTED NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2023 Accountlng poll¢les-<ontlnued Penslons- contlnued The Charlty partlcipates In the Unlver51tles Superannuatlon Scheme. The scheme 15 a hybrid pension scheme, providlng defined benefits (for all mernbersl, as well as defined contributitin benefits. The assets of the scheme arÈ held in a separate trustee-administered fund. Because of the mutual na￿re of the scheme, the a$5ets are not attrlbuted to IndI￿d￿31 Institutlons and a scheme-wlde contrlbutlon rate Is set. The Charity is therefore exposed to actuarial risks associated with other institutiot)s' employees and is unable to identify it5 share of the underlylng assets and Ilabllities of the scheme on a conslstenl and ieasonable basls. As required by Section 28 of FRS102 'Employee beneflt5" the Ch3rlty therefore account5 for the scheme as if it were a wholly defined contribution scheme. As a result, the amount charged to the profSt and 1055 account represents the contributions payable to the scheme. Slnce the Charlty has entered Into an agreement (the Recovery Plan) that determlr)es how Èach employer wlthin the scheme will fund the overall deflclt, the Charity recognises a Ilability for the ¢ontributitsns payable that arise from the a8feement Ito the extent that they relate lo the deflcltl and therefore an expense Is recognSsed. FRS102 makes the distlnclion between a Éroup plan and a multi-employef scheme. A 8roup plan Con￿$t5 of a collection of entities under common control typically with a sponsorin8 employer. A multi*mployer scheme is scheme for entltSes not under common control and represent5 Ityplcallyl an Industry-wlde scheme such a5 Unlversltles Superannuatlon Scheme. The accountlng for a multl-employer scheme where the employer has entered Into an agreement wlth the scheme that determlnes hov4 the employer wlll fund a dellclt results In the recognStion of a Ilabi15ty for the contributions payable that ar15e from the a8reernent Ito the extent that they felate to thè dèficltl and of the resultin8 expense In the proflt or Ios5 in accordance with section 28 of FRSIO2. The Trustees are sat55fied that the scheme provided by Unlver51tles S¢Jperannuation Scherne meets the deflnltion of a multb-ernployer scheme and has therefore recogn15ed the discounted falr value of the contractual contrlbutlons under the funding plan In exlstence at the date of approvlng the flnanclal statement5. When employees have rendered servlce to the charltv, Short term ernployee beneflts lo whlch they are entitled are re¢ogni5ed at the undlscounted amount expected to be pald In exchange for that servlce. Insurance clalms An Insurance claim Is reco8n15ed when the Charity has establlshed its entlllement to the relmbursement of the Insured loss, the re¢elpt of the reimbur5ement1s Vlrtually certaln and it5 amount can be measured reliably. Receipt is vlrtually certaln when an offer of settlement Is recelved from the Insurer. The Insurance settlement 15 recognised at the value receivable. Insurance reimbursernents relating to bu5Iness Interruptlon are recognlsed a5 Other lficome. Reimbursement5 in respect of expenditure are offset against the related expense heading in the SOFA. KeyJud9ements and estlmatlon uncerto1nt￿S There were no judgements made in the proces5 of applying the above accounting policies that have had Si8nificant effect on amount5 rewgnised in the financial statements. 23
