Chairmans Report AGM 5[th] April 2025

The past year has once again been one of continued success and growth not only to our Association but also to the railway and the museum as a whole. This is testament to the hard work everyone has carried out and it really pays off, we should all be proud.

The 2024 season has been filled with new ventures. We have seen a very successful exhibition into the social and railway history of Backworth which offers a glimpse into our growing and fantastic archive. In July our Model Railway Exhibition proved a huge success and allowed us to make new connections within the hobby. Our continued use of our own resources has allowed us to run some superb freight demo days and photo charters, again proving that we can do a lot with what we have and inspiring us to do more. We have also seen the restoration of our Shell BP Tank wagon which marks the start of the overhaul of the fleet of tank wagons we have on site.

The Waggonway Tearoom once again had a record year and continues to enhance the visitor experience and provides a huge financial support to allow us to complete vehicle restoration, put on events and invest in the improvement of the railway.

A new addition to the site that will be having its grand opening this Easter is the North Tyneside Light Railway. We started to see this emerge over the season with a demonstration at the Model Railway weekend in July however major construction couldn’t begin until later in the year. There has been a significant amount of work and resource that has gone into this and I’m sure this will be a success.

Moving into 2025 we have a packed year of events and interesting things happening, we are hosting a month long history event, hosting our 2[nd] Model Railway Weekend and looking forward to the return of Ale by Rail. We are moving from strength to strength, gaining more members, getting loads of positive feedback on social media and generally continuing to make a good name for ourselves. The site has never looked better and it continues to do so.

Thank you to everyone for everything you do, we continue to grow and develop in extremely positive ways creating a really strong and positive place we can all be proud of. Please continue to encourage, to learn and to do what we all do best. I would like to continue investing in the site and taking on new projects to showcase what we do.
