MORTON VILLAGE HALL
Charity Registration Number 507673
- TRUSTEES REPORT 2020 2021
This has been an extremely challenging year. We entered it in lockdown due to Covid 19 pandemic and the Hall was closed to all groups from March 23[rd] 2020.
In April the Community Food Hub was brought into being.
This was the brainchild of Denise Nimmo and Tianne Rankin to help those in the village who were vulnerable and unable to shop for food . Some have no one to shop for them and some are short of money. The Village Hall Management Committee and Parish Council gave the Food Hub their full support. People donated food for the Food Hub and various local businesses donated food and other essentials. These were stored in the Village Hall and food boxes distributed by volunteers on Mondays and Fridays.
It was decided that surplus supplies could be disposed of at a Pop Up shop in the Village Hall car park and donations asked for towards buying for the Food bank. Prescriptions were picked up and other help and advice given by phone. This proved a huge success.
Government guidelines were adhered to with the help of ACRE and Derbyshire Community Council who
kept in constant touch as rules changed.
Grants and support During the year we gratefully received grants to help us. We have received a total of 9 grants:NEDDC - £10,000.00 to help with the running costs of the Hall while we have no income. The following are for work in the Community – food bank and other help during the Covid pandemic.
NEDDC Community Action - £500.00 DCC Covid grant - £500.00 Groundwork UK (Tesco) - £500.00 Princes Countryside Emergency Fund - £1,500.00 Derbyshire Community Foundation Derbyshire - £500.00 Foundation Derbyshire - £2,000.00 Big Lottery - £7,400.00 Masonic Charitable – £250.00
VE Day commemoration
May 8[th] 2020 was the 75[th] anniversary of VE Day and plans to commemorate this occasion had to be
scrapped.
On May 13[th] Lockdown was eased slightly and a new set of rules were published.
Supported by the Parish Council and donations from local residents the food hub quickly became established..
By May
-
Over 100 food hampers had been delivered
-
numerous prescriptions collected
-
ongoing social contact with supporting telephone calls for villagers feeling isolated
-
We also had an amazing lady providing daily hot meals to several residents who were most at risk and unable to cook for themselves
Supported by
-
Morton Parish Council who have been replenishing the stock as needed
-
Derbyshire County Councillor Kevin Gillott with a grant for £500
-
Sitwell Arms and Corner Pin with donations
-
Residents generosity with donations of both food and money
All of the above have enabled the support to continue.
The Team
Originally set up by Denise the team of volunteers now reached over 20 and the group interaction was coordinated by Amanda Jayne Pike the Parish Clerk.
During June, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was unanimously agreed to postpone the AGM until a future date in line with ACRE recommendations.
a popup shop was set up at the hall and this was available to all.
Reopening plans, as advised by the Government through Rural Action Derbyshire, were discussed.
The following is an extract from Morton Church Newsletter for July 2020:-
Life in Lockdown .
On Monday, March 23[rd] 2020, we started lockdown in England. We had no idea what to expect but the ones of us who were isolating started clearing out cupboards, gardening, walking, reading, sewing, exercising etc etc. – how long did that last!!
But now, as July starts we have had 112 days of lockdown, tidy cupboards and pristine gardens full of vegetables, it is beginning to get tedious. A lot of us have had an occasional foray into the village or even Tesco. To start with, getting food was a priority and for those of us who could not venture out, getting a food delivery became the sole focus of the day. For some, however, getting food was such a major problem that two of our young mothers decided to do something about it.
Denise and Tianne started a Food Hub in the Village Hall working tirelessly to supply boxes of food to the extremely vulnerable. With their huge army of volunteers, they and their helpers have worked tirelessly to make this a huge success. There were cooked meals for those unable to get a meal any other way.
The Parish Council has backed this project and provided lots of help. Hundreds of forms were filled in to get grants which have funded the Hub. The donated food came in bulk from local supermarkets etc. and that surplus to requirements was set up outside the Hall in a ‘Pop Up Shop’ which proved very popular – take what you need and give a donation to the Food Hub Funds.
It also proved a wonderful place for socially distanced chats!
Now, we have ‘lockdown locks’ (never knew your hair was that colour!) and ‘lockdown love handles’ and look forward to our new normal, although many of us are a bit nervous of facing the world again.
“Due to the lock down rules relaxing, we have dropped from 27 hampers to 15 as more people are starting to venture out. We are very aware that some people have become dependent on our assistance, however, we do need to ease people back into the' new norm' where possible. This being said, we have decided to move all the hampers to a Friday. The Pop up Hub will be reduced to 2 days, Wednesday and Friday with a view to dropping down to just a Wednesday in a few weeks. The other reason for reducing the days is owing to the fact that we have a reduced number of volunteers as they are slowly going back to work. Also, our husbands are back at work as of next week , which is why we need to adjust the opening times due to childcare. God forbid that there isn't another wave of this awful virus but in the event that there is, we will continue with the hampers.
Can I take this opportunity on behalf of Tianne and myself to thank you all for your support during these unprecedented times. The time and effort that everyone has given in achieving the same goal has been heart warming and
In July a letter was received from Baroness Boycott who is the MP for Feeding Britain. It was sent via Feeding Derbyshire to say thank you to those running the Morton Food Hub for their tremendous contribution in providing those in need with food, other goods, compassion and practical help during the pandemic.
On July 4[th] Lockdown rules were eased and new rules published.
Some of the user groups had sent a copy of their risk assessments in the event of the Hall reopening.
However, it was unanimously agreed to wait another month before making a decision. It would be impossible to open for some of the groups.
In August the Pop Up Shop continued to run twice a week.
Just to answer questions about this shop – the stuff has been given by local firms. It is surplus to their requirements and would otherwise go to landfill. Come along and take what you need and leave a donation which will go towards buying essentials for the hampers which are still being delivered to those who need them.
Anyone who lives in Morton is welcome to come along and do some shopping!!
The Village Hall was gradually reopening to certain groups from the beginning of September. On Mondays a Community Cafe was started and the Food Hub Pop Up Shop continued in the Village Hall.
As we were not able to have our usual coffee and cakes in the Rectory Room to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care, we liaised with the Village Hall Food Hub, and raised over £1,000. Cancer did not disappear during the crisis and sufferers and their families are still desperately needing our help.
November 5[th] - Back to another Lockdown.
Things eased a bit at Christmas for a few days.
- February 2021 BBC TV East Midlands Today Morton Food Hub
By March 2021 the ‘Morton Food Hub’ was approaching its first anniversary.
We are fast approaching our first anniversary of the 'Morton Food Hub'. Who would've thought it would still be running a year on? What was a small idea to offer help to the community grew and grew into a well-oiled machine. Through donations and grants, the volunteers continued to provide a service that was frequented by many and seemed to grow in numbers week upon week. In addition, they were still supplying weekly hampers to those families in need.
