The aims of the Society shall be to advance,
improve, develop public education in, and
appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its
aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including
through the presentation of public concerts and other
charitable activities.
Summary of the main activities in
relation to those purposes for the
public benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
The choir performed five concerts (details below)
during the period of the report, and travelled to
Newcastle’s twin town in Germany to perform
Brahms’A German Requiem, with MusikVerein
Gelsenkirchen. Our educational purposes, in addition
to concerts and associated publicity and information,
were met by choral singing workshops. Public benefit
was notable by the positive reception by near-
capacity audiences for performances of a high
standard with excellent soloists and instrumental
musicians.
Statement confirming whether the
trustees have had regard to the
guidance issued by the Charity
Commission on public benefit
In planning the activities of the choir, the trustees
have had regard to the Charity Commission’s
guidance on public benefit and have ensured that
the choir’s focus is on its objects, as above, for the
benefit of members of the public attending its
concerts.

Achievements and Performance

Summary of the main achievements In November 2023 we sang G F Handel’s Israel in of the charity, identifying the Egypt accompanied by Newcastle Baroque, to an difference the charity’s work has appreciative audience. The timing of this event was made to the circumstances of its particularly challenging with the background of beneficiaries and any wider benefits conflict in the Middle East, and the programme note to society as a whole. by our musical director acknowledged this.

In December 2023 our Christmas concert included ancient and modern settings, with particular attention to arrangements by R Vaughan Williams, a past president of the choir. In March 2024 we performed J S Bach’s St John Passion , with a fine group of young soloists and Newcastle Baroque, which was enthusiastically received.

In June 2024 we focussed on two performances of Brahms Ein Deutches Requiem , the first in Gelsenkirchen (see above) with full orchestra and the second in Newcastle with Brahms’ own piano duet version. Trustees were pleased to commission a new choral work from Cecilia McDowall, to celebrate our musical director’s 40[th] anniversary as leader of the choir: this will be performed in November 2024. This will be of lasting benefit to many choirs and audiences in the UK and beyond. As before, during this period we have provided considerable benefit to our audiences, to our members, and to Newcastle Baroque musicians. It is also noteworthy that we obtain the services of younger solo singers, many of whom have local connections, and to whom we provide significant opportunities in the development of their professional careers. Trustees continue to look for and help create new choral works, and to spread the knowledge and appreciation of music in the North East of England and beyond.

Review of the charity’s financial The charity held a balance of £48,805 at the end of
position at the end of the period July 2024, an increase on the previous year’s final

holding reserves stating why they are commitments to its members and its contractual

amount of the reserves is informed by its annual

case of illness of musicians and/or extra venue fees
for rehearsals.

Independent Examiner’s Report To the Trustees of NEWCASTLE BACH CHOIR SOCIETY:

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Newcastle Bach Choir Society (the Trust) for the year ended 31 July 2024.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner’s statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with my examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view’ which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
