Management

The business of the Choir is managed by the Choir Committee comprising of the Trustees, together with representatives of each vocal section of the choir, librarians, and concert manager with the Musical Director in attendance. All the Trustees and the section representatives are elected by members of the Choir from the membership of the Choir.

Activities

The primary activity of the Choir is the glory of God through the study and practice of choral music in order to foster public knowledge and appreciation of such music by public performances. In the year ended 31 July 2023 the Choir looked forward to an easier year, in terms of rehearsals and performances, as Covid restrictions were lifted, and it was pleasing that Membership increased steadily throughout the year.

The first event of the year was held in Llandaff Cathedral in November 2022, a performance of Mendelssohn’s St Paul followed by Brahms’ German Requiem in March 2023. Despite some residual nervousness for concert-goers following the lockdown periods, audiences were good, although not as great in number as pre-Covid.

It was with sadness that the Choir said farewell to Alexander Thacker who had served as Director of Music for many years. At the farewell tea, members wished him well in his new role.

Simon Lovell-Jones was appointed as the new Director of Music taking up the role at the start of the summer term. The Choir finished the year with the summer concert featuring Bernstein’s The Chichester Psalms.

Financial Review

The details of the financial position of the Choir are presented in the accompanying financial statements. The Choir ended the 2023 financial year in a much better position, being delighted to welcome many new members resulting in an increase in subscription income and related gift aid. Subscription income continues to be the main source of income, necessary to cover rehearsal costs and concert deficits.

The Committee aims to manage concert deficits by budgeting for the year ahead and selecting programmes that are a mix of works that are likely to attract a good audience and those which are aimed at introducing our audience to newer composers or less well-known works.

Signed for and on behalf of the Trustees of the Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society
