ILKLEY CONCERT CLUB

Registered Charity No. 506886

18 Oakburn Road, Ilkley LS2 9NN

DRAFT ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31 MAY 2025

Governing Document: Constitution dated 13 October 2010 as amended 2 November 2022 Officers and Management (Charity Trustees) Committee:

Chair: C. Skidmore Vice Chair: R. Templar Hon Secretary : J. Simpson Hon Treasurer: D. Williams Committee: D. Bridgewater, P. Harris, P. Hurst, C. Rudman, L. Wellings, J. Wesley. Bankers: TSB, PO Box 373, Headingley Branch, Leeds LS14 9GQ Independent Examiner: SKS Bailey Group Ltd, 19 The Grove, Ilkley LS29 9LS

Objects: “The objectives of the Club shall be to educate the public in the arts and sciences, and in particular the art and science of music, by the presentation of concerts and other activities”

Organisation: The Club’s concerts are held within the King’s Hall complex, Station Road, Ilkley, and are widely advertised. All the organisers volunteer their services. Financial Reserves: The Piano and Development Fund is considered a Designated Fund. Non-designated funds should not normally exceed planned expenditure.

Activities: In the season 2024/25 we presented a full season of eight concerts which included highly successful debut recitals at the club for Mishka Rushdie Momen, the Ben Goldscheider Horn Trio and the Dudok Quartet from Amsterdam. Another first was a concert of music for recorder and accordion from Tabea Debus and Samuele Telari. We were extremely happy to welcome back the violinist, Chloë Hanslip with her current pianist, Danny Driver, and to hear again from the Treske Quartet, who had performed as students in our afternoon concerts. The season was rounded off by a greatly

entertaining song recital from Ailish Tynan and James Baillieu and a quintet programme of music by American composers from the virtuoso players of the Kaleidoscope Cahmber Collective.

For the fourth time we presented a short series of afternoon concerts, highlighting performances by students from the Royal Northern College of Music which were well attended. We also supported the ongoing Waterman series of piano recitals and master classes, including an outstanding performance from the runner-up in the 2024 Leeds Piano Competition, Khanh Nhi Luong.

The Committee has met on three occasions this year, and sub-committees have met as appropriate.

Chair’s Report

2024/25 was another successful year for the Club. Although since the Covid pandemic we have not managed to sell all our subscriptions, we have continued to enjoy a lively interest in the purchase of individual tickets for our monthly concerts. We are grateful to Lindsey Wharmby for staffing our box office.

We were sad to have to close our secondhand CD stall during the year, a volunteer effort started by Tony Hudson which had earned considerable sums for the Concert Club over the years. We are glad to have passed on the remaining CDs to another local charitable cause.

We continue to benefit from a close relationship with the staff of the King’s Hall who respond sympathetically to our requests and do their best to support us in bringing firstclass music to Ilkley. We owe them a debt of gratitude.

committee considers to be sound.

Chris Skidmore, August 2025

Honorary Secretary’s Report

We held three Committee Meetings in 2024-25 in local Ilkley venues, including the Clarke Foley Centre and All Saints Church. This year we introduced an element of digitalization to the process of making contracts with performers’ agents and we store contracts and booking forms on a secure shared Google Drive, making our administration more secure and more resilient.

Jo Simpson, July 2025

Honorary Treasurer’s Report

I am pleased to report that the club finances remain strong. This year there has been a significant rise in the hire costs of the Kings Hall and there may be a further rise in the coming year. The additional costs of the hall hire have been offset by a slight reduction in artists’ fees, although this will he higher in the coming year.

The surplus made in the year has enabled us to transfer £4,000 to the Piano Development Fund and continues to give us the ability to be flexible in our future programming.

As ever the fact that the Club is able to maintain the quality of performers and make a surplus, is in no small part as a result of the work of all the volunteers, who give generously of their time in running all aspects of the Club.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Ilkley Concert Club

I report on the accounts of the trust for the year ended 31[st] May 2025.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of accounts: you consider that the audit requirement of Section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (The Act) does not apply. It is my responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under Section 145(5)(b) of the Act, whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner’s report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner’s statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

  1. Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 130 of the Act, and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records, and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act have not been met, or

  2. To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
