The 2021-22 and 48[th] season of presenting professional music concerts in the name of Parbold Douglas Music, Lancashire [PDML] offered a great season of variety and quality. Someone ‘in the know’ had mistaken our artists’ line-up for London’s Wigmore Hall. The season promised a vigorous to return concert-going and restoration of a community spirit. By the very end of the season, it could be said that PDML had achieved its aim but the journey had been hard and costly. However, PDML survived to rise up and will present another season of varied and brilliant music-making. Evidence from different sources is gathering that Parbold has become known and recognised throughout the music world as a significant venue. Artists purposefully include a Parbold concert prior to a London Wigmore Hall engagement. PDML has also received and has accepted and invitation to offer an engagement as part of the prize for the winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition and even hosted last year’s winner, Alim Beisembayev, who stood in for the unavailable Eric Lu, the previous competition’s winner.

Before the season began the Trustees were shocked by the sudden and sad incapacity of the PDML Treasurer, Clare Gillard, who had worked tirelessly for the organisation and was a model of loyal, committed and efficient volunteering work for more than a decade and impossible to replace. In the light of the scarcity of qualified volunteers able and willing to make a sustained commitment, the solution has been found in forming a Treasury Team to support the Treasurer role. Trustee Brian Pilling has accepted the leadsupervisory role and title of Acting Treasurer.

Though there were very few national regulations to cope with the Covid Pandemic the 2020-21 concert-operation required considerable background work to meet the recommendations on the operation of public performances. These were put in place and as the season progressed were gradually relaxed. One valuable advantage was the 2020 installation of a fresh-air ventilation and heating system in

the hall. However, toilets and entrances and exits were and remain inadequate, so that for most of the season, intervals were very short with no refreshments; emergency exits were used to disperse the audiences. As recorded in the last annual report PDML normally budgets for over-80% attendance in the 200-seat auditorium. However, in 2021 audiences still lacked the confidence to venture a visit and instead of the usual high levels of attendance or full houses, audiences were in the low 40-60% range with one at 15%. Consequently, PDML has had to draw substantially on its reserves. This same narrative will be reflected in the financial report for the 48[th] season. Fortunately, Douglas Music had reserves, principally its piano replacement fund, from the good years to sustain it for the season. Consequently, the Board has met more frequently than usual to assess and plan responses to the changing circumstances,

In the midst of winter artists reported that the differing national regulations on quarantine and the high levels of Covid-Omicron infections made touring impossible between different countries, travelling to and from the UK, and larger groups had the insurmountable combination of problems of the infection level, travel restrictions and rehearsals. Three bookings asked to renegotiate these winter concerts and this was done and the public informed. The incidents revealed the need for audiences to subscribe to our Newsletter for emergency notices.

When concerts resumed at the very beginning of April 2022, attendances improved; confidence rose and by the end a 70-79% audiences attended brilliant solo concerts by violinist, Alina Ibragimova and then pianist, Nelson Goerner. These events had the usual intervals with simple refreshments. The volunteers were considerable buoyed up by these events and encouraged to think that there was the possibility of a return to what had evaporated in the pandemic.

The two QAVS awards to Douglas Music Society and Parbold Picture House are now displayed in the hall and representatives have attended a Queen’s Garden Party

celebration at Buckingham Palace and a commemorative service at Blackburn Cathedral. Maria Evans has continued and increased her sponsorship of the forthcoming season of concerts. This is her sixth such sponsorship and the Trustees are very appreciative, on behalf of all the audiences, that someone far away in the USA still supports our regional and community enterprise.

The 2021-22 season below presents an impressive assembly of international artists and ensembles and a diversity of programmes and ensembles to appeal to the widest possible public. Our Steinway continues to attract the world’s finest pianists, and so the season offers a range of brilliant performances.
