COVENTRY PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY
TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31 AUGUST 2025
Objectives and activities for the public benefit
The Coventry Philharmonic Society (“the Society”) has the following objectives:
∙ to advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals.
∙ to provide facilities which promote the practice or enjoyment of the art of music for recreation or other leisure time occupation and to make them available in the interests of social welfare to individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances or for the public at large with the object of improving conditions of life.
The Society is largely maintained through members’ subscriptions and sales of concert tickets and programmes. Substantial funds are also raised through the activities of the Social Team and Knit & Stitch Group. The beneficiaries of the Society are its members and the wider concert-going public.
The trustees confirm that they have referred to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit when reviewing the Society's aims and objectives and in planning future activities..
Structure, governance and management
The charity is governed by its constitution, adopted on 22 October 2015 at the Annual General Meeting, which sets out its rules and objectives.
Coventry Philharmonic Society is an unincorporated charity (no 506185) managed by a board of trustees. A list of those serving during the financial year is shown on the charity information page.. The trustees are appointed each year.
Trustees meetings are held regularly and deal with the broad strategy of the organisation and monitoring of its implementation. The trustees are responsible for the overall financial running of the organisation.
Reserves policy
We have reviewed our Reserves Policy in line with Charity Commission guidance and have reduced our reserve to £15,000, which will cover unforeseen expenditure that may arise in the future, e.g. purchase of new non-monetary assets and costs associated with possible expansion of our activities. The Reserve Policy will be reviewed on an annual basis.
Results and review
The overall state of the Society’s year end finances is shown in the Annual Summary document. It shows an overall surplus for the year of £5,239 compared with £1,735 last year. This means that our reserves have increased to £27,615.
Once again, the Christmas concert was the most financially beneficial, with a profit of just over £1700, but small profits were also made in two of the three other concerts given during the year. The choir’s contribution to the overall loss from a joint concert with two other choirs was just £267. A performance of the Faure Requiem yielded a profit of £458, of which £450 was donated to the Church of the Precious Blood in Coventry, which had commissioned the concert as part of its Centenary celebrations.
Gift Aid continues to be an essential part of our income but we saw a decrease this year, with Gift Aid income of £2,435 compared with £2,733 for 2024.
