SHEFFIELD FAMILY HOLIDAY FUND
Annual Report for 2021
I am delighted to report that, following a very difficult 2020, SFHF has bounced back in 2021. We have continued to receive full support from our core Charitable Trusts, organisations and individuals which amounted to £29,470 compared with £25,693 received in the previous year. Many of our core supporters reverted their funding models away from Covid-19 emergency funding and SFHF were able to increase support from these organisations to £23,750 from £16,750 in the previous year. Many of these organisations have shown tremendous loyalty to SFHF over the years and I am extremely grateful for their support. I would also like to extend a special thank you to South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation (SYCF) for supporting us for the first time this year.
The Family Holiday Association has rebranded itself and is now known as the Family Holiday Charity (FHC). SFHF wishes them well in the roll out of this new branding. Sadly, the Covid-19 pandemic did still have a large impact on the number of holidays and day trips that were awarded to Sheffield families in 2021. The uncertainty of lockdowns and the ever changing rules impacted FHC’s ability to award holidays. Also, holiday providers were left with uncertainties around whether they could open their facilities and families were left facing anxieties about whether they should take their families away.
Even with these difficulties, FHC managed to allocate holidays and day trips to 481 individuals in the Sheffield region. 28 families (115 individuals) benefited from a short break and 366 individuals benefited from a day trip. Families who were awarded holidays enjoyed time at the caravan parks in Cayton Bay (Scarborough), Skipsea (East Yorkshire), Prestatyn (North Wales) and Whitley Bay (North East coast), to name but a few. Families who benefited from a day trip were taken to the new Gullivers Valley Theme Park and others enjoyed a trip to see the Snow White pantomime. FHC will be working hard in 2022 to ensure that as many families as possible are supported with funding from SFHF and will be able to enjoy a holiday break to alleviate the challenging circumstances which currently face them.
Our dividend income has increased to £2,399 this year from £1,434 in the previous one. We will remain forever grateful for the funds raised in memory of the late James Bedingfield and the other donations that made it possible to purchase shares in Merchants Trust at an extremely advantageous price in 2020. The two investment trust holdings which we now have, City of London Investment Trust and Merchants Trust have increased their dividend distributions every year for the last 55 and 38 years respectively. This means that the figure of £2,399 noted above is likely to continue rising for the foreseeable future. It is worth noting that this sum will pay for seven families, at current rates, to have a short break caravan holiday each year.

Our individual donors continue to support the charity with great vigour. I’d like to personally thank Mr and Mrs J Ferretti for opening their garden in 2021 and raising an amazing £989 for us. I must also mention Sarah Lynch and Roger Purkiss whose ongoing support for Sheffield families is very much appreciated. The St Marie’s Activity Group also increased their support this year to £730 but I am sad to report this will be their last donation as the group will be winding up in 2022.
I must go on record to thank Investec for all the hard work they do in supporting SFHF and I was particularly delighted that we were chosen as one of the 25 countrywide charities for inclusion in their 2021 Advent Calendar. In addition they kindly gave us £1,500 which will go toward paying for five additional short break holidays in 2022.
In November 2021, the trustees were able to hold a face to face meeting for the first time in nearly two years. It was a pleasure to see people in the flesh and to update everyone on progress. Chief Executive Officer Kat Lee and Mags Rivett from FHC were present and provided a very useful and helpful update on the plans they have to support our disadvantaged families. At this meeting we also welcomed our latest trustee, James Parker, an Investec executive.
I place on record every year how much we appreciate the wholehearted support we continue to receive from FHC in London for we could not function without their unstinting support. We look forward to providing, with their help, a record number of short break holidays and daybreaks for our local needy families in 2022.
My final thank you goes to all my fellow trustees for their unwavering support in publicising the good work that our charity provides in our wonderful city of Sheffield.

Sheffield Family Holiday Fund Impact Report 2021
Information provided by Kat Lee Chief Executive, Family Holiday Charity (FHC)
Breaks distributed
Throughout 2021 the FHC were able to allocate holidays and day trips to 481 individuals in the Sheffield region. All of which have been funded via donations to the Sheffield Family Holiday Fund (SFHF). 28 families (115 individuals) benefited from a short break and 366 individuals benefited from a day trip .
We are delighted to share with you some quotes from families who were able to have a short break below.
The holiday came at a perfect time - We are due to move home and my daughter is changing school next week. This symbolises leaving the "old life" behind and moving on. This break meant we could spend some time away from home doing fun things as a family and close a door on the traumatic events the children had to go through. It also was perfect timing as we used to have a caravan before my partner died and we were able to visit old friends on that site.
The kids and I really did need a change of scenery after an exceptionally difficult few years. We actually felt like a normal family. Doing fun things with the children and spending quality time with them made me realise how much we have all missed out on due to my deteriorating health over the last 3 /4 years. It also reminded me that I can still be me, despite my symptoms.
Thank you isn't a big enough word to express how great it felt to be away, sending a massive hug to everyone who helped get this little family a holiday for a few days. It was magical.
We have never had a family holiday so it meant a great deal to us. We have had a difficult year, going through homelessness and coping with both physical and mental health issues so this was a great chance for us to have a break.

Charity No. 505590
The last few years have been exceptionally difficult for us as a family. Having a chance to have a break by the seaside was wonderful. We never expected the caravan to be so big, and having 2 toilets was a real bonus.
Since the break, due to my health and how it limits me, my son has been accessing respite foster care. The holiday allowed us to spend some really positive time together, create lovely memories and shared experiences. This helped build the resilience he needs to deal with situations when I am too unwell to care for him.
It meant that we could have time together as a family getting away from the stresses that we left behind in Sheffield.
The break gave us the chance to get away and leave our stresses and worries behind. We have had so much to deal with and this came at the right time.
Criteria to be given a holiday
The FHC have a base level of criteria in order for a family to be awarded a holiday: a household income of less than £24k, one child in the family must be under 18 and the family must not have had an overnight break in the last 4 years. The FHC works very closely with the relevant referrers to ensure that holidays and day trips are awarded to the most deserving families. In many cases the FHC will also help the families with travel costs and work with the referring organisations to offer additional support.

Applications for 2021
Unfortunately, the uncertainty around Covid-19 related lockdowns made the situation difficult for the FHC and for many families who were scheduled to take a short break. Some
10
Charity No. 505590
breaks were cancelled at the last minute due to changing government rules and families also cancelled due to anxieties around travelling. Any families that were due a holiday in 2021 and could not attend, will be invited to take a break in 2022.
Another issue faced by the FHC was that many referring organisations had also been hit very hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. The FHC tried to work closely with the referring organisations to ensure they could get the breaks to those families most in need.
A selection of organisations from Sheffield that have successfully referred in 2021:
Organisation Sheffield Young Carers Project Sheffield City Council - North MAST Railway Children Sheffield City Council - West MAST Sheffield Children, Young People and Families Service Shelter Homeless Prevention and Resettlement Service Sheffield City Council - East MAST Roundabout Ltd Social Care Sheffield City Council Arbourthorne Community Primary School Wybourn Community Primary School Sheffield City Council Family Holiday Charity
Plans for 2022
The FHC plans to trial new initiatives to help improve the experiences of families who take a break. This will include food vouchers and paid activities. Alongside these new initiatives, the FHC would also like to give families some choice during their breaks, to help families feel more independent.
During 2021, the FHC took a board level decision to change when holidays and breaks are awarded to avoid negatively impacting a child’s education. They are continuing to work with the holiday providers to ensure that the FHC can access the fairest prices for breaks in the peak holiday periods. The FHC will also extend the holiday period for as long as they can to ensure that the maximum number of holidays can be awarded.
The FHC would also like to expand the referrer network and reach out to organisations and charities who may not have referred before.
The SFHF are looking forward to working with the FHC in 2022 to maximise the number of holidays and day trips awarded to families from the Sheffield region.
