The Theatre, Objectives, Purpose, Delivery and Management
The Theatre
Poynton Players own the theatre at Georges Road West and over the years have successfully not only maintained it to a good standard, but extended and refurbished the building constantly to create the warm and welcoming small theatre that we have today. We have a cosy and popular bar serving drinks teas and coffees at performances and can accommodate 101 patrons each night with excellent disabled access and facilities throughout the theatre.
Objectives
The objective of the charity is to promote dramatic arts and deliver live performances of a wide range of art and drama to the community of Poynton and surrounding districts. We do this via our own membership, typically presenting around four plays each year, usually for six evenings per play. We additionally strive to encourage the use of our theatre as a “community asset” allowing other clubs and societies and individuals to use our facilities to present their own forms of Art.
Recent examples include :-
Rehearsals, followed by short-run productions by The Northern Repertory Theatre. Personal use by local budding playwrights to rehearse and present their output. Use by local children’s Drama, Singing and Dance clubs. Use of the theatre as a venue by Poynton Arts Festival. Use as a venue for local bands to both rehearse and present the occasional concert.
Delivery
This season, Poynton Players presented a total of five performances offering a wide range of challenges and roles to our membership, which were well attended and appreciated by approximately 1,800 patrons across the year, namely :-
The Good Life.
A Christmas Carol.
After Miss Julie.
ART.
All the Ordinary Angels.
These plays offered a very wide range of roles which enabled most of our aspiring actors to tread the boards and certainly challenged our set builders, sound and lighting teams and back-stage crews. Additionally, we estimate that our “community users” brought our total audience at the theatre to somewhere between 4000 and 5000 patrons.
Society Management
This season, we maintained a membership of 50 paid members, we have an AGM annually around the end of August where the Society’s financial and management performance is presented and discussed, and election of Trustees is undertaken alongside open forum from the membership to raise awareness of issues, direction and initiatives required for the forthcoming season.
The Trustees meet monthly to review all aspects of running and maintaining our theatre, decide on play selection, casting, logistics and managing the safe use of the theatre by third parties. We operate within the contents and obligations of the Equality Act 2010 and GDPR 2018 and carefully review all elements of the Health & Safety requirements associated with running a small theatre to

ensure the safety of our audiences and members during, not only performances, but during quieter times in the theatre whilst decorating, set building, rehearsing etc.
We currently do not undertake performances involving children as we do not have any members with the appropriate safeguarding qualifications.
We undertake regular inspections and risk assessments for our fire and evacuation policies and safety across all elements of running the theatre and have recently procured a defibrillator which we hope never to use.
Financial Review
The financial performance of the charity is presented on pages 6 to 7.
Cash Reserves
We have a conservative approach to our reserves and have maintained a solid level of cash reserves for many years, currently our reserves are approximately equal to one year’s revenue. We continue to manage our revenue streams and expenditure very carefully and are very confident that the financial future of the charity is solid.
Future Plans
Our play programme for next season is in place, again with strong focus on offering plays which will attract good audiences, but also use, challenge and develop our members skills and enjoyment.
Although we have strong cash reserves, we do have a weak roof which will require some capital expenditure anticipated over the forthcoming season.
The difficulties associated with sourcing some incandescent light bulbs is now advancing our planned programme to install LED lighting throughout the stage which again will have a capital impact, but one that we will manage carefully.
We already have a number of third-party users booked in for the next season, so the “spread” of art and drama delivered via our theatre will continue to diversify across 2025 and 2026.
