Kidneys For Life
Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 30 April 2025
The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 April 2025. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Our mission
The strategic aim of Kidneys for Life is the relief of renal related illnesses and the funding of research and education in renal disease, transplantation and allied fields together with the provision of direct patient amenities and medical equipment .
Objectives
Kidneys for Life objectives and main activities are to undertake charitable fundraising to enable the fulfilment of our mission as set out above. This includes:
-
Providing amenities and medical equipment for patients of renal units in hospitals in Greater Manchester and its neighbouring counties relative respectively to the treatment given and the treatment received by the aforementioned patients in respect of kidney complaints and disorders.
-
Undertaking, promoting, developing and encouraging research of the kidney and urinary tract and research into treatment of such diseases and to publish the useful results thereof and providing support for conferences and workshops both in the UK and overseas relating to diseases of the kidney and urinary tract.
-
Undertaking, promoting and developing treatment of persons suffering from diseases of the kidney and urinary tract.
-
Educating the general public in diseases of the kidney and urinary tract.
-
Educating renal staff at hospitals in Greater Manchester and its neighbouring counties in diseases of the kidney and urinary tract through educational courses, workshops and conferences both in the UK and overseas.
The trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the Trust's aims and objectives and in planning future activities and setting the grant making policy for the year.
Significant activities
The main activities currently carried out for the public benefit by the charity can be broadly categorised into the following:-
-
Research into renal related disease and associated diseases including transplantation
-
Direct patient amenities for those renal patients under the care of renal units in Greater Manchester and neighbouring counties.
The beneficiaries of our main activities are ultimately renal patients. There are increasing numbers of people in the UK with some form of kidney disease and this is on the rise due to increased life expectancy and less healthier lifestyles. Developments in the care and treatment of those suffering from kidney disease has also the potential to relieve the huge burden of care often faced by the families and/or carers of sufferers. Our research and educational programmes funds researchers and renal staff who use these funds in their work to improve the lives of sufferers from kidney disease and related conditions, and their carers by developing therapies, potential medications and improvements in the personal care of sufferers. Any benefit received by researchers is purely incidental to the objects of our work.
Kidneys for Life stipulate in our Grant terms and conditions that those in receipt of funding from the charity follow best practice in maintaining the independence of research funding and ensuring that sponsored researchers abide by best practice in research ethics and animal testing; our aim is to maximise the efficiency of the research programme whilst minimising the likelihood of harm to research volunteers and animals.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES How we work
The charity delivers its main aims in a number of ways including:-
-
Small Research Grants Scheme relating to renal diseases, treatment and transplantation
-
Post doctorate grants into renal disease and transplantation
-
Travel bursaries for renal staff to attend specialised training courses to further enhance their knowledge of renal diseases, renal replacement therapies, transplantation and best practice/new methods of patient care
-
Educational grants to renal staff
-
Support for specialist conferences both in the UK and overseas including the Fabry Nephropathy Conference which took place in Hamburg in 2024 and is due to take place again in Bologna in June 2026.
At Kidneys for Life, we pledge to prioritize kidney research without prejudice, ensuring that the voices of patients, clinicians, and scientists are heard over the noise of any political views. It is our firm belief that science goes beyond politics. We stand firmly against any form of discrimination. Chronic kidney disease affects over 850 million people globally, demanding unbiased, data-driven innovation to improve prevention, treatment, and patient outcomes. It is the Trustees belief that kidney research transcends political boundaries. It calls for cooperation, open inquiry, and a quest for knowledge, and as such should not be influenced by politics.

Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 30 April 2025
-
We contributed £1,123 from the BE Xmas party fund to support their annual Christmas party. As bladder exstrophy is a rare condition, the families affected really benefit the opportunity to connect, share experiences, and meet in person. Due to the wide catchment area of those looked after by the team at RMCH, the Christmas Party provides the annual opportunity for many of the families to meet in person.
-
We made a contribution of £1,543 to the Urology Sports Day. This is a fully inclusive event which is hosted at the Regional Sports Arena in Manchester. All families with children under the care of the Urology department at RMCH receive an invite. The event is free to attend and there are a variety of sporting activities available to try on the day; the aim of the event is to empower the children to try new activities whilst also giving families the chance to network with others who have similar lived experiences.
-
We made a contribution of £11,925 towards the Manchester Children's Transplant Team in 2024 for their attendance at the British Transplant Games in Nottingham. £3,834 was spent from the Children Renal Fund to support a new project - Kidney Karnival - an inclusive fun and educational one day event held at the Regional Sports Arena in Manchester. All children under the care of the renal team at RMCH were invited to attend along with immediate family members. The event provided an opportunity for the young patients and their families to meet with departmental staff away from the hospital and learn more about their bodies and treatment in a fun an interactive way. 180 people attended and feedback was outstanding. The intention is now to make this an annual event.
Details of all research projects can be found on our website and further information can be provided by contacting the charity directly.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Results
The total incoming resources for the year amount to £217,665 (2024 the figure was £213,306). The charity expenditure for the financial year was £242,761 (2024 figure was £251,946).
The market value of the KFL investment portfolio at the year-end was £243,184.
As in previous years, our income has been generated from varying income streams and this year we have been pleased to run an increased number of workshops aimed at educating medical staff - examples of these include EWOPA (European Working Group on Psychosocial Aspects of Children with Chronic Kidney Disease) 2025, Home Haemodialysis Study Day organised by the paediatric team at RMCH and the pGN Forum led by Dr Durga Kanigicherla. These events fit well within our charitable objectives and have been well received by attendees and ultimately will bring real value to patients; they also bring a new source of income to the charity and introduce the charity to a wider audience.
We have had several individual fundraising successes - these have included individuals hosting golf days, taking part in running/walking events and organising their own challenges. Over the coming year there are several exciting fundraising initiatives planned included a supporter led fundraising ball.
As a result of budget restraints within the NHS we anticipate staff requests for travel bursaries and education grants especially from the cohort (in particular, although not exclusively, nurses, clinical fellows) who have little/no access to alternative funding sources to rise. The Trustees fully recognise the value of supporting these applications and once again we have been very pleased with feedback from recipients of these grants.
The next financial year sees the charity head into our 50th anniversary year - a milestone that the charity Trustees are immensely proud of. We look forward to celebrating the charity's achievements over the past 50 years and will take this milestone anniversary as an opportunity to review our future charity aims.
Investment policy and financial position
The charity has the power to make any investment which the Trustees see fit. Our investments are managed by Redmayne Bailey and we receive monthly reports on the value of the Kidneys for Life portfolio. The spread of investments was agreed and a certain approach to risk continued. The charity believes it can generate income which together with investment income will allow the charity to continue for the foreseeable future with its level of charitable payments.

Kidneys For Life
Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 30 April 2025
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Reserves policy
The events of recent years have had an effect upon the reserves of the Charity and the Trustees are aware that it will be imperative that we maintain income to ensure that we are able to have in reserves funding for one year for our Travel Bursaries, Nurse Education Grants, Publication Grants & Small Research Grants Scheme, £200k approximately. We endeavour to spend in excess of our income, save for restricted funds as detailed in Note 14, leaving sufficient reserves to fund ongoing research as mentioned.
FUTURE PLANS
We will continue to carry out our main activities and our focus on future research, which by its nature is a slow process. Our focus will be:
-
to improve diagnosis and treatments for patients with kidney inflammation ( to stop progression to kidney failure) - to improve the treatment for patients on dialysis at home and in hospital dialysis units looking at improving phosphate and sodium clearance and water balance
-
to improve the lifespan of kidney transplants through clinical trials of new drugs and by preventing graft loss from recurrence of the primary kidney disease in the transplant

Recruitment and appointment of new trustees
A trustee can propose the appointment of a trustee, on a proposal a vote shall be taken and approval shall be obtained through a simple majority.
Organisation
The charity is administered from the Renal Research Laboratories at Manchester Royal Infirmary. The charity's objects and principal activity consists of charitable fundraising and the provisions of those funds for the advancement of research and provision of direct patient amenities for those suffering from kidney related diseases.
Our trustees are unpaid and details of trustee expenses and any related party transactions are disclosed in note 5 to the accounts.
Decision making
All decisions are made by a consensus of the Trustees who are all Renal Consultants in the North-West of England.
Trustee induction, training and development
New trustees are provided with an induction pack and are given initial training by the trustees and further training as and when required.
Risk management
The Trustees review the major risks which the Charity faces at Trustee meetings. Trustee meetings take place three times per year and will continue to do so going forward. In addition to this the Trustees will convene additional meetings to discuss the financial position of the Charity. It is anticipated that by reviewing on a regular basis the Trustees will be able to appropriately adjust the reserves and charitable payments in line with the performance of the Charity. This will allow for the Trustees to provide sufficient resources in the event of adverse conditions. The Trustees have also examined other operational and business risks faced by the Charity and confirm that they have established systems to mitigate the immediate significant risks.

GN Fund
The GN fund has been set up to advance clinical practice and improve patient outcomes in glomerular diseases. Glomerular diseases are complex thus the fund has been created to enable the organisation of study days that will bring together clinicians and higher specialty trainees from 12-15 units in the north of England. These events aim to enhance professional development, share scientific knowledge including breakthroughs in understanding of diseases and newer treatments, facilitate management of complex diseases through expert input, and foster collaborations among healthcare professionals specialising in nephrology. The ultimate expectation is that this improves standards of care and patient outcomes in the management of glomerular diseases.

A separate bank account was opened to facilitate the income and expenditure for the bi-annual conference. The next conference is scheduled to take place in Bologna in June 2026. The Fabry bank account owed £4,271 to Kidneys for life at the 30th April 2025.
In recognition of the work undertaken by Kidneys for Life, the Fabry fund contributes £15,000 per annum to Kidneys for Life staff costs.
The Fabry Fund is succeeding in its goal of maintaining reserves to at least the equivalent of a major sponsorship (£75,000).
The Steering Committee of the Fabry Update Group (SCFUG) with Professor David Warnock serving as Chair and Dr Fabian Braun as Vice-Chair at the helm, continue to ensure there are sufficient funds available before expenditure is approved thus ensuring there is never a shortfall of funds.
The Fabry Fund is run by a proactive SCFUG who meet via Zoom on a regular basis. Several new members have joined the SCFUG in the past year and a new Term of Reference is being drawn up. The SCFUG continue to be mindful of the financial position of the fund and as so agree that final decisions relating to travel bursaries are not to be made until sufficient educational grants from sponsors have been secured. This approach gives sufficient time to amend the program to fit within the budget.
