COVENTRY SCHOOL EDUCATION TRUST
Annual report for the year ended 31 August 2025
The Trustees of the Charity who served throughout the year are: Mr. Brendan Connor (Chair) Mr. Michael Butler Mr Christopher Jones Ms Ann Weitzel Dr Caroline Rhodes Mr Jonathan Thompson
Registered Charity number: 504837
Any correspondence should be addressed to the Chair at Coventry School Foundation, Kenilworth Road, Coventry CV3 6PT.
The trust is established to provide financial assistance to pupils of the senior schools of the Coventry School Foundation who are unable to continue their education due to unforseen circumstances.
The Trust has continued to support the Coventry Schools Foundation Senior Schools by providing urgent funding for pupils whose education has been put at risk by unexpected changes within family circumstances. This type of financial support falls within in the objects of the Charity asset out in the Trust Deed. The Trustees envisage that there will be a continuing need for such support and the demand is likely to increase rather than diminish in future years.
Despite the volatile context of world politics, the economic performance of the Trusts investments has not been adversely affected as world stock markets have maintained an upward trajectory over the year. The impact of President Trump’s tariff policies has not had a sustained negative impact despite the fall in stock markets in the early months of 2025. The war in Ukraine continues to add to political uncertainties as does the situation in Gaza.
The independent education sector continues to deal with the cost pressures on energy and public sector wage rises as they influence teaching and support salaries and pension costs, The prospective impact of the VAT imposition will inevitably worsen the financial position of Coventry School Foundation as the numbers of pupils will inevitably decline. The scale of the reduction may put at risk the current structure of the schools and the range of its educational provision. The next year is likely to be a difficult period for independent schools nationally and the CSF will not be immune to the effects.
The Trustees will continue to provide support including the potential provision of ‘start up’ funding for alumni donation schemes. Initial discussions on such a scheme have been initiated with the Foundation and should be concluded next financial year.
I am grateful to our professional advisers and my fellow Trustees for their continued support.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of COVENTRY SCHOOL EDUCATION TRUST
I report to the charity trustees on my examintation of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 August 2024 which are set out on pages 2 to 4.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts (under section 145 of the 2011 Act);
-
follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section
-
145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act); and
-
state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
1) Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the trustees have not met the requirements to ensure that:
-
proper accounting records are kept in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act: and
-
accounts are prepared which agree with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements
-
of the 2011 Act; or
-
2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
