Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
Membership:
For the purposes of this report, the figures given for the annual total will be those up to the end of July 2022, when the membership year came to a close. The Southern District of Cumbria YFC (YFCSD), has had a very positive year, with membership returning to pre-pandemic levels with a total of 735 members (excluding Advisory Members and Club Leaders) across 10 clubs. This is an 85% increase year to date which the Southern District are incredibly proud to have achieved.
The Southern District of Cumbria YFC clubs operate as a democratic charitable organisation for young people living in rural areas. Individual clubs within the district elect their own club officers and plan club events, activities and socials throughout the year.
As noted in previous reports, becoming a young farmer in the 21[st] century does not mean that you must be a farmer. Members come from a variety of back grounds however they all have the common interests of community, rural life and agriculture in general as well as farming in particular. The district’s young farmers have careers in a wide variety of disciplines including teaching, medicine, finance and farming to name but a few. Our members have in common an understanding of the importance of being part of a youth organisation that supports and celebrates the county, its young people and rural life in general. The Southern District continues to work hard to ensure that their competitions and field days embrace and promote this ethos.
Competitions:
Despite some restrictions still being in place at the start of the young farmer year, the Southern District continued to work hard to reengage members and to organise activities and events.
The young farmers took part in all of the speaking competitions and achieved great success. Southern District officers were also very proactive in helping to organise and take part in stock judging tug of war competitions.
A successful Field Day also took place, the first since 2019 with all the Southern District clubs taking part and working very hard to ensure that the day was a great success.
Fundraising, Community and Charity Work:
Club and district fundraising activities returned to full strength in 2021 – 2022 with the Southern District raising an incredible £30,766.31 for local and national charities. Crook YFC raised an outstanding £18,000 for the North West Air Ambulance, Blood Cancer UK and the Christie NHS Foundation Trust. The club undertook a number of activities to raise the funds including a 3 peaks challenge a summer sports day and a grand draw.
Community is also important to the Southern District young farmers and clubs take part annually in the Club Community Challenge. The High Sheriff of Cumbria presents an annual award for the Best Community Project annually at the Cumbria YFC County AGM and in January 2022, the award was presented to Cartmel YFC for their work at a local care

home. The Cartmel young farmers had visited the care home to find out if they needed any jobs doing and it was highlighted that the grounds and gardens needed tidying up and the hedges cut back so that the residents could once again see the spectacular views surrounding their home. After 3 weekends of hard work, the garden was back to its former glory and the residents were very grateful to the young farmers for their help.
The Coming Year:
The aims for the Southern District for the coming year will continue to concentrate the development of the district’s young farmers. The district is back to full strength and is already working on a full calendar of events, training and activities for the coming year. To help achieve these goals, the following objectives are in place:
• Continue to increase membership.
- Ensure that elected club officers are given training and support to fulfil their roles and run clubs safely and effectively.
• Encourage members to take part in competitions at club, district, county, area and national level and to take pride in representing their district.
- Host a successful Field Day.
• Continue to encourage members to plan fundraising and volunteering activities.
