leisure time occupations, being facilities which will improve their

mental capacities, self- reliance and individual responsibility so that they
may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of the community.| |---|---| ||In setting objectives and planning activities, events, competitions and
training for the members of the Cumbria Federation of Young Farmers’
Clubs Northern District, the Trustees gave careful consideration to the
Charity Commission’s Public Benefit guidance.
• Membership of Cumbria YFC Northern District is open to anyone aged
10 – 28 years of age. Membership is not restricted to those from a
farming background and clubs actively recruit new members from within
schools, at shows and via their social media. This enables the
organisation to have a broad reach and be of public benefit, not only to
the young people of Cumbria, but to the broader communities that they
are linked to.
• All young farmer clubs take part in annual voluntary work within their
local communities. This provides much needed help and support to the
community and also gives our members the opportunity to strengthen
links and play an integral part within these communities. Voluntary work
undertaken has included, rebuilding church walls, clearing school
playgrounds, re-hedging common land, painting village halls and tidying

March **2012** **TAR** 5 Section D Achievements and performance ## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** ## **Membership:** For the purposes of this report, the figures given for the annual total will be those up to the end of July 2025, when the membership year came to a close. The Northern District of Cumbria YFC had a total of 861 members (excluding Advisory Members and Club Leaders) across 15 clubs, a decrease of -21% on the previous year. Our smallest club, Egremont YFC has 21 members and our largest club, Raughton Head YFC has 102 members. Carlisle YFC saw an increase of 58% with 11 new members. To ensure continuity of the district, senior members are encouraged to mentor the junior members, ensuring that skills and knowledge are passed on to the next cohort of young farmers. With senior members leaving the organisation and an increase in junior membership, some clubs have found the last year quite difficult to manage and are being supported by county and district officials and county office. ## **Competitions:** This was another fantastic year of competition for the Northern District, with members taking part in a whole host of speaking, stock judging, performing arts and sports competitions throughout the autumn and into the spring. Competitions are an incredibly important part of the young farmer experience and give those taking part the opportunity to develop skills and confidence in a safe and supported environment. It is wonderful to see how our members progress through their competition journey and as an organisation, we are immensely proud of the work that we do in this area. ## **Training and Standards:** Officer training is held annually in order to ensure that club Chairs, Secretaries and Treasurers have the necessary skills to run their clubs safely and successfully. In addition, training is also given in safeguarding, running bars and events and preparing risk assessments. This ensures that our club and district officers have a full understanding of their responsibilities and are equipped with the tools and knowledge to carry out these responsibilities. With an increasingly young membership, officer training is proving incredibly vital to ensure these new, younger officers are supported during their tenure. ## **Community and Fund Raising:** Community continues to be very important to the young farmers of the Northern District with clubs taking part in the annual Club Community Challenge. The Challenge see clubs taking part in repairing walls and fences, painting village halls and schools, planting hedges, and making and flower displays to local care homes. Fundraising activities also continued to thrive with £112,409.79 raised by the district in 2024 – 2025 for a number of both local and national charities. Drigg YFC raised in excess of £100,000 for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) by pushing a replica helicopter from Drigg to the GNAAS base in Langwathby. Raughton Head also raised over £25,000 for MNDA which saw them complete the Wainwrights within a 24 hour period. Fundraising and community challenges help to develop and strengthen team spirit within clubs, embedding a sense of achievement - and pride and re emphasising the importance of helping others. March **2012** **TAR** 6 Section D Achievements and performance **The Future:** The Northern District is looking forward to the coming year and will concentrate on the following core objectives: - Continuing to increase membership figures. • Ensuring that elected club officers are given training and support to fulfil their roles and run clubs safely and effectively. • Encouraging members to take part in competitions at club, district, county, area and national level. - Hosting a successful Field Day. - Looking at ways to encourage and increase membership - Encouraging members to plan fundraising and volunteering activities. - Reviewing District finances to ensure that the district is offering value for money and is sustainable in the longer term. Dissolution of the County Federation Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves** If in the event of the dissolution of the County Federation there remains after the satisfaction of all its debts and liabilities any property or funds whatsoever to which it is beneficially entitled, the same shall be transferred to the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs to be held on trust by the National Federation at its discretion and used for the benefit of the Young Farmers’ Clubs organisation in the area concerned and shall not be distributed among the Member Clubs of the County Federation unless the said National Federation is no longer in being at the time of dissolution. **2. Restricted Reserves** The restricted reserves are: - Monies received from closed clubs is restricted for 7 years during which it will be transferred back to the said club if any point during this period it reforms. After this period, it will be transferred to the unrestricted reserves. - Monies received from Friends of Cumbria is restricted to the specific use it was originally provided for. If, after a period of 3 years, from when the monies were originally transferred, there are remaining funds, these may be transferred to the unrestricted reserves with the agreement of the finance and general-purpose committee. If, during the 3-year period, it becomes apparent the original use of the funds is no longer appropriate, the finance and general-purpose committee may redesignate the funds to a different purpose. - Monies received from organisations is restricted to the specific use or event if was originally provided for. If, after the specific use or event has been delivered, there are remaining funds, these may be transferred to the unrestricted reserves or any other restricted reserve with the agreement of the finance and generalpurpose committee. ## **3. Unrestricted Reserves** The unrestricted reserves are available for the general operating expenditure of the charity. The charities reserve policy is to maintain freely available reserves equivalent to 12 months of budgeted operating expenditure, based on previous 6-year average. The trustees consider that unrestricted reserves of at least £110,277 should be maintained for Cumbria YFC as an organisation in its entirety. This will be reviewed at each finance and general-purpose committee meeting.
