Presidents Welcome- David Aireyi County President
David Airey welcomed everyone to the Annual General Meeting and was delighted to see so many faces
present. The meeting was delayed in commencing, due to an accident on the Al near Boroughbridge
and various proposers or seconders were stuck in traffic.
David also welcomed the visitors:
From Lancashire - Michael Rimmer, Lancashire President, and Ian Close who will be judging the Alan
Goldie Trophy, together with Stuart Robson NA President, and Fred Mason NA Trustee.
Apologies for Absence
David requested all apologies to be noted in the attendance register at the back of the room.
To receive the President's Remarks- David Aireyi County President
President Mr David Airey welcomed everyone to the Annual General Meeting and outlined the issue with
the Covid period that had an impact on membership numbers dropping at the start of his presidency.
David explained Club Leaders had found an opportunity to escape and did not return to assist. The
number of junior members have increased and is better than expected. David congratulated the unsung
heroes, the older members having to step up earlier than predicted, and to the hard work of the parents
for transporting the members to the competitions and events. David emphasised that parents, club
leaders, and helpers need to continue to help members so that they can get the best out of Young
Farmers. Intermediate and Senior members have brought more members to the clubs, which will help
the Juniors to develop their skills. David reminded the room that both Intermediate and Senior members
get the most out of Young Farmers if they put the work in. David congratulated all the members who
competed for Yorkshire. David attended Stockman at Gisburn Aurtion Mart and was impressed that all
the members were keen to participate. This competition encourages members to speak in front of
strangers and gives them confidence. David added that he was proud to be at Gisburn, noting a lot of
members had travelled from afar to compete. David rounded by stating it is very positive and means
we can only go from strength to strength.
To present National Federation of Young Farmers, Awards for 2022123
David Airey and Mel Guy presented the awards for the National prize winners, with a list of
competitors displayed on the screen.

Adrian asked Mr Barton to present Mr Paul Gill, Boroughbridge YFC and YFYFC Trustee, his Time and

Stephen Jarvis and Darren Coates were elected as tellers for the evening.
To receive and adopt the 49th Annual Report of YFYFC
This will be presented by the County Chairman and Sub-committee Chairmen
The 49th Annual Report
County Chairman - Edward Bentley- report regarding County
Ed Bentley hoped everyone had received a copy of the 49th Annual Report and ststed it had been an
honour to be the County Chairman for the 48th and 49th year of the federation especially coming out
of lockdown.
Ed stated that alongside reps attending meetings, the possibility of using Zoom for people unable to
attend has been a bonus. Members have been keen to compete at District and County Rally, which is
a good sign, and we had a tremendous County Rally in 2022 and it feels like YFC is back! Fast
forward to June at the Northern Area Field Day hosted at Darlington Auction Mart we had a great
turnout of Yorkshire members, and we were triumphant winners. Ed thanked John Craddock and the
GYS committee for the GYS showcase and a visit from HRH Princess Royal Anne, and he would
advocate for any member to get involved on the committee. Ed recognised Young Farmers were
getting out there doing charity work by fundraising and attending local agricultural shows.

Ed reported that the new digital membership has been a challenge and "touch wood" we are getting
there but this has also been a tough challenge for the office, but we have now turned the corner with
1600 members signed up.
The outlook is looking a lot more healthy and a testament to club officers and club leaders. Ed stated
we now have 44 clubs funrtioning and only 6 clubs with less than 20 members. Currently Great
Smeaton YFC have grown to 73 members, followed by Felliscliffe YFC with 57 members.
Ed thanked the EFM Committee for supporting 2 Junior Activate Weekends and thanked the
volunteers for stafffing the residentials. Ed reported that Billy's Bingo was a great addition to the
event calendar which was new and exciting.
Ed thanked Karen Wasden (Dash) as the Field Development Officer for attending club and district
AGMS and completing DBS checks noting there is currently a knowledge gap, as we have a lot of new
members, therefore, more to do! We have 60 % juniors and with the older members moving on,
which is a huge knowledge gap to fill.
Ed thanked the following people for their support throughout his term in office:
All the staff, Julie, Karen, the Trustees, the 2 Vice Chairman, Kirsty and Tim, Darren, and Michelle in
their safeguarding roles, David as County President, Adrian as President Elect, and Stephen Jarvis as
Honorary Treasurer.
Ed explained that there is limited manpower to support Julie, so introduced Fiona Taylor to the room
who has joined the County Office staff team,
Ed finished off by saying; "Let's go to County, Northern, and National, and bring back all the trophies
and certificates as we head into our 50th anniversary year!"
The room showed their appreciation with a round of applause.
Competitions & Skills Committee report- Mel Guy
Mel thanked the members for a brilliant competitive year, stating it was great to start her year in office
as Chairman with members winning all 3 trophies at Northern Area Field Day which we hosted.
Fantastic first in-person County Rally back after the pandemic, which was a great success, and it was
great to see enthusiastic members who were a credit to the federation. At the Northern Area Stockman
competition members competed well and it was a huge achievement to win the top 3 places. This is
great for both team building and accumulating silverware. The senior and intermediate members are
encouraging younger ones and passing on their knowledge.
Thank you to the parents, by transporting their children to events, club leaders, advisory and to Ed for
all his help in her first year as Chairman, to Anna and Lizzy as Vice-chairs for all their help and support,
to all the judges and stewards for their dedication and giving up their free time at competitions and
finally to Julie in County Office for supporting the Competitions and Skills Committee.
Events, Finance & Marketing Committee- Joe Holmes
Joe reported that Events, Finance and Marketing has had a good year that was full of old classic
events and some new dos.
Billy's Bingo in January was a sell-out and next year we will look for a bigger venue.
The committee had a successful quiz night in October and during the year we have rebranded the
members leaflet, Friends of YFYFC leaflet and the keyring. The committee has hosted 2 Artivate
**
Weekend where the Scouts were "m nied" by a Young Farmer, stamping our authority as the
superior youth movement! Thank you to Will Bradley for running in the Mascot Gold Cup at
Wetherby.
Joe gave heartfelt thanks to John, Lois, Ed, Julie, Karen and the members for supporting all the
events and fundraising.

Yorkshire & East Riding Great Yorkshire Show Committee- Kelsey Williamson
Kelsey advised the room that we had a brilliant Great Yorkshire Show held over 4 days, and it was great
to be Covid free. Kelsey thanked the members who came to help on the stand and apologised for
being unable to be on our stand herself due to her work commitments elsewhere on the showground.
Kelsey stated on the Tuesday we hosted the Tea Drinking World Record and had a visit from HRH
Princess Anne, Adam Henson from Countryfile had judged the banner design competition, thank you to
Fodder for the butchery demonstration, and on the Friday, we hosted the dairy judging award
presentation.
Other activities during the week included the log saw and hosting Yellow Wellies, Samaritans,
Addington Fund and FCN charities. Kelsey thanked all the volunteers for their support over the week,
the Yorkshire Agricultural Society for encouraging YFC but the biggest thank you was to John Craddock
for coming out of "retirement" to support the federation. This was met by a show of gratitude from the
members as a round of applause.
David Airey thanked everyone for their reports.
The 49th Annual Report was proposed by: Ed Bentley, YFYFC Chairman 2021-2023 and Helmsley YFC.
Seconded by: Kirsty Chapple, YFYFC Vice Chairman 2021-2023 and Holme Valley YFC. Kirsty stated Ed
and the committees had some amazing achievements over the year and there should be more to come
in the next year.

To receive a vote of thanks to the Retiring Officers
Isabelle Bush from Farnley Estate YFC proposed a vote of thanks to the retiring officers starting with
the familiar phrase of "good evening, ladies, gentlemen, and fellow young farmers" Isabelle thanked
David Airey as County President for his term in office, Adrian Willis, Deputy President, the Trustees,
Darren Coates, Paul Gill, and Andrew Wood. Isabelle thanked Adrian for all his support and guidance
over the year to help the federation run smoothly. Isabelle thanked the sub committees for their hard
work and diligence, firstly the Events, Finance and Marketing Committee out-going officers Joe
Holmes, John Craddock and Lois Abbey and welcomed the new officers Will Fawcett and Philippa
Gray, who will work besides Joe as the Committee Chairman. Isabelle thanked the Competitions &
Skills Committee, Mel Guy, Anna Booth, and Lizzy Elgie for their exciting competitions calendar.
Isabelle highlighted the support of the County Vice Chairmen Kirsty Chapple and Tim Weatherhead
and Ed Bentleys hard work over the past 2 years at County Chairman increasing the membership from
330 post covid to 1650 members today. Isabelle invited the room to join her in a warm hearted and
well-deserved round of applause.

To make elections to the post of:
President - Mr Adrian Willis
Proposed by: Kirsty Chapple, Holme Valley YFC
Seconded by: Philippa Grayi Calderdale YFC
"Good evening, ladies, gentlemen, and fellow young farmers, it is my pleasure to propose Mr Adrian
Willis as the Yorkshires, County President. For many of you this evening, Adrian will need no
introduction, with him being a very familiar face at both County meetings and on the tug of war field.
Since Adrian first joined young farmers... many years ago, he has taken on most roles at some point.
Adrian stsrted off as a member of Worsbrough YFC and South West District. Although sadly
Worsbrough YFC folded some years ago despite a huge effort to keep it open, Adrian still remains
actively involved in South West being our current District President. He still attends all our district
meetings and most of our district events, turning into our Christmas Quiz Master and as it turns out
he's a fairly good bingo caller.
Alongside club and distrirt, Adrian is still very much involved at all levels. We all know how involved
Adrian is at County, but he is also a Northern Area Trustee and was recently elerted as an NFYFC
Deputy President.
Holding all these roles and his numerous decades of experience means that Adrian holds a wealth of
knowledge on most things in YFC. Now, there are times when many of us will have said a few choice
words when the phone rings and you see that Adrian is calling again (which timing couldn't be better,
I'd just written this sentence as Adrian rang). However, most of the time there is an idea or
suggestion of something we could do, a piece of advice, unless of course it's just to tell me what
colour Blackpool Tower is currently lit up.
Most people don't need me to list reasons as to why Adrian should be County President, but I hope
you will agree and support my proposal that he would be perfect for the job.
Ed agreed ststing he could attest to all of Kirsty's speech.
Philippa Gray seconded Kirsty's proposal. Philippa stated that Yorkshire Young Farmers would not be
where it is without the support of Adrian. Adrian's support and guidance extends from District to
County level. Philippa ststed Adrian's knowledge from planning competitions to club issues, from the
key grass roots members to Distritt, County and National level is unbeatable. Adrian is always in
attendance at Competitions, EFM or the Exec meetings with his valuable contributions. Adrians time
commitment to the federation is immeasurable from answering the phone at any time, his constant
guidance is invaluable. Philippa thanked Adrian for representing YFYFC at both Northern Area and
National and asked the room to join her and Kirsty to support this elettion.
Ed asked if there were any further proposals, and none were received. All the room were in support
of the elettion and Adrian was willing to stand as County President and was duly elerted.
Deputy President- Miss Rachel Wilson
Proposed by: Lizzy Elgie, Boroughbridge YFC
Seconded by: Anna Booth, Rathmell YFC

"Tonight, I am honoured to propose Miss Rachel Wilson for Yorkshire Deputy President for the
forthcoming year. Rachel is a great ambassador for Young Farmers, over the years Rachel has held
many roles within the federation including Chairman of the Development and Marketing sub
committee and County Chairman in 2004 - 2005 and more recently Northern Area President. In more
recent times, especially the past year as Ebor President, Rachel has been a fantastic support for
members, a friendly face to all and always there to lend a hand on Rally Day. It's fair to say that in
Rachels time as Ebor District, she got thrown in well and truly at the deep end. As one of the districts
hit most by Covid, Rachel took on the challenge to help support the rebuild of the district. Having
Rachel at the end of the phone has made my job as Ebor District Chairman much easier. As we lost
our secretary and treasurer to their travels, Rachel has helped me massively running the district. I
hope you all join me tonight in agreement that Rachel would be a fantastic Deputy President for the
forthcoming year."
Anna Booth, from Settle District seconded Lizzy's proposal.
"It's a privilege to be here this evening, to second Rachel Wilson to the Yorkshire YFC Deputy
Presidents role for the forthcoming year. Rachel has been associated with YFC for a number of years,
as a member of Ebor District and was also involved at a Yorkshire level as D&M Chairman and County
Chairman in 2004-2005. Most recently Rachel has been Northern Area President and President for
Ebor District. Rachel is always an active supporter of YFC events, particularly with helping at Public
Speaking and as an indoor steward for County Rally. As a familiar and friendly face around the
county, I am sure Rachel will be an excellent addition to our County top team and hope you11 all join
with me in seconding the proposal of Rachel Wilson as Yorkshire YFC Deputy President for the
forthcoming year."
There were no further proposals and Rachel accepted the role thanking Lizzy and Anna for their kind
words.
Vice Presidents-
Jointly Proposed by: Edward Bentleyi Helmsley YFC & Georgina Hobson, Aire Valley YFC.
Jointly Seconded by: Edward Bentleyi Helmsley YFC & Georyina Hobson, Aire Valley YFC
The following nominations were elected as YFYFC Vice Presidents for the forthcoming year 2023
2024:
Cledales District - John Craddock
Ed stated that John has held lots of roles within YFC, a stalwart supporter, always at the end of the
phone. John works of the family's arable farm and is a keen cricketer. John is very much a YFC
cliché!
Craven District- Andrew Wright
Georgina stated Andrew is a very big part of Craven District and always offers hands on support.
Andrew works for CCM Auction Mart in Skipton and was one of the main drivers of their Next
Generation event which a huge amount of YFC members attended. Andrew is a keen support of the
Competitions & Skills Committee and always makes that extra effort to attend meetings even when at
the other side of the world, an asset to the district and county.
Ebor District - Rachel Wilson
Ed reported that Rachel has held previous roles at County including County Chairman is a great
support to Ebor District, helping with finances and offering guidance. During the day Rachel is one of
the Directors at Vale Engineering.
Eskdale District - David Smith

Ed highlighted that David has been involved in Stokesley YFC since he was 10 years old and is always
available with help or advice with any aspect of YFC. David farms on his family farm on the outskirts
of Stokesley and whenever Eskdale host an event or competition David is always there to support the
distritt.
Harrogate District- Dave Scruton
Ed ststed that Dave is well known throughout Harrogate District and is also President of Felliscliffe
YFC. Dave has held office as County President during the covid years and is a great coach and
advocate for tug of war and can often be seen wearing his famous Union Jack shirt!
Ryedale Distrirt- Ian Teasdale
Ed reported that Ian Teasdale is an ex-Helmsley YFC member and has now successfully bred the next
generation with son Alfie joining YFC. lan (Big Nuff) was always a familiar face during his time as a
member across many district events and held many positions in the club/distritt, He is now District
President and brings a renewed energy trying to encourage members to take their YFC to the next
level, on the touchline, at stockman competitions or attending county competitions. Ian is a qualified
agricultural engineer working across North Yorkshire.
Settle Distrirt- Gordon Beresford
Georgina highlighted Gordon is a past member of Coniston Cold YFC, taking part in many
competitions and events during his time as a member and is currently a beef and sheep farmer at
Halton West. Gordons 2 daughter have also both been attive members of local clubs over the years.
Gordon has begun his second term being Settle's District President and has been an excellent support
at events, as both a judge and steward over the last year and will hopefully continue for the year
ahead.
South West District -
To be elected at the Executive Committee meeting in October 2023.
Went Valley District - Paul Smith
Georgina reported that Paul is a great support to Selby YFC and Went Valley Distritt. Paul owns a
haulage and transport company at Cawood in Selby, so if you need anything moving, he's your man.
Paul is a great advocate for a good YFC bash!
Georgina continued "so with that.. I do hope you will all agree that all of tonight's nominations are
brilliant supporters of YFC in their own rights and will be excellent individuals to have as Vice
President for our County for the coming year and I hope you will join Ed and myself in seconding the
proposals this evening"
The room agreed unanimously, and all the candidates were duly eletted.
Honorary Treasurer- Mr Stephen Jarvis
Proposed by: Joe Holmes, Worth Valley YFC
Seconded by: Lois Abbeyi Boroughbridge YFC
Joe Holmes ststed that Stephen Jarvis is heavily involved in the County and Ebor District and is very
helpful in explaining accounts and numbers. Joe reported that Stephen was well known for winning
the county rally baking section in the past. Joe thanked Stephen for pouring over the accounts,
showing him the ropes and his expertise in financial matters. Joe ststed Stephen would be an
excellent candidate as Honorary Treasurer for the County.
Lois Abbey reiterated Joe's comments advising that it was easy to second the proposal. Lois
commented that stephen Jarvis has model values, always keen to help members and to help out at
County Rally. In addition to going through the budget with a fine-tooth comb, Lois personally thanked

back bone to Young Farmers and would like to second the nomination.
There were no further proposals and Stephen accepted the role thanking Joe and Lois for their kind
words.

Paul Gill to be elected for a three-year term
Proposed by: Henrietta Jarvis, Boroughbridge YFC
Seconded by: Kelsey Ann Williamson, Upper Wharfedale YFC

experience from County Chairman, Club Leader, supporting Craven District and in addition, he has a
key role with Sue Ryder Hospices as their charity fundraiser.
Henrietta proposed Paul Gill as Trustee for a 3-year term. Henrietta stated that Paul has held several
roles at club, distritt and county level and provides invaluable support to both clubs and members.
Paul is an integral part of Boroughbridge YFC and Ebor Distrirt, held County roles as Finance
Chairman and County President in the past. Henrietta thanked Paul for his time and commitment to
the federation and had great pleasure in proposing that both Andrew and Paul are re-elected for their
continued invaluable work alongside Darren Coates.
Kelsey Ann Williamson seconded the proposals for both Trustees, Andrew for a further 2-year term
and Paul for a three year term. Kelsey added that both Trustees are a great support to County and
the clubs, which has greatly helped all the members succeed. The room fully supported the election

Seniors £46.58.
Members should note that at the NFYFC AGM that an increase in National Affiliation Fees was agreed

from the floor.
Honorary Life Members
Mr Michael Warren, Harrogate Distrirt
Proposed by: Katy Addyman, Knaresborough YFC
Seconded by: Tom Stockil, Winksley-cum-Grantley YFC
Katy Addyman reported that she cannot be credited with the proposal and was here to champion the
words of Scott Waterfield, Knaresborough YFC who is currently travelling in France and the commute
is just too long.
Katy proposed Michael Warren on behalf of Scott Waterfield. "Mick is a founder member of Harrogate
YFC, and the term "Life Member could not be more appropriate from his early teens until his eighties
he just never stopped attending. Since the merger of Harrogate YFC with Knaresborough he has been
a staunch supporter of the new club and regular attendee at meetings, as both he and his late wife
Anne (also a former YFC member) were made Honorary Life Members of Knaresborough some years
ago, two of only three people to hold the position. Mick now presents a trophy in Anne's memory at
the club's AGM each year. Mick knows our members by name and cares about each one, offering
them advice opportunities and putting them in touch with people in the farming world, there are few
people who don't know Mick and still fewer he doesn't know by name. His support extends to all clubs
of the Harrogate Distritt, which he's been involved with over the years, and he is never absent from
any Distritt event and no distance is too far for him to travel. Mick has been a valuable link between
Harrogate District YFC and other bodies, such as the Ayrshire Cattle Association and the Great
Yorkshire Show, along with various agricultural discussion groups. A champion of everything the
Young Farmers movement stands for: its future and all its traditions. and the font of all knowledge on
the movement from founding to the present day, nobody could be more accurately termed a Life
Member" than Mick and nobody deserves more to have that made official."

Tom Stockil followed on by seconding the proposal stating that he had wrote a few words, but Katy
had said it all really. Tom reported that unfortunately Mick cannot be present tonight and he has
given his apologies. Tom stated that no one deserves it more than Mick, he is a great guy and could
often be seen around the YFC and farming circuit with his late wife Anne in a wheelchair whom he
doted on. Mick is a great ambassador for Young Farmers, actually starting off in Felliscliffe, then onto
Harrogate before ending up in Knaresborough, Tom noted that even back in the day people liked to
jump ship to different clubs and Mick is still here with us attending regularly. Tom noted that Mick
was YFC through and through and you can always blame chatting to Mick if you are late! Tom stated
Mick was a busy man outside of YFC, heavily involved in the Yorkshire Agricultural Society community,
judging and stewarding cattle and as a hobby he attends the Auction Rooms in Hampsthwaite, Mick
also finds time to farms pigs Wlth his son in Killinghall. Tom asked everyone in the room to join Katy
and him to elect Mr Warren as an Honorary Life Member of YFYFC.
All the room were in agreement and Mr Warren was duly elected.
To announce the winner of the Alan Goldie Trophy
To announce the winner of the Alan Goldie Trophy for best contribution to debate at this evening's
meeting presented by Mr Michael Rirnmer, President of Lancashire FYFC and Mr Ian Close, former
Chairman of Northern Area and Yorkshire FYFC.
David thanked Michael and Ian for judging the best speaker and invited them to sum up.
Michael stated he was from the best side of the Pennines which received a large friendly'boo" from the
membership! Michael apologised if he seemed jaded but he had tsken in some sea air on Saturday and
to his shock and dismay he had walked through Blackpool and come across 5,000 young farmers having
a good time without embarrassing themselves! Michael reported he'd had a great experience, spoken
to the Police who spoke positively of the young farmers movement and also accidentslly visited the
Winter Gardens.
Michael thanked everyone for their great speeches and both he and Ian had agreed on the winner
which was the Vote of Thanks to all the officers by Isabelle Bush, Farnley Estate YFC. Michael noted
Isabelle had ensured everyone with a role had been mentioned and why their role was important to
Yorkshire Young Farmers.
Isabelle accepted the Alan Goldie trophy and the room rewarded her with a round of applause.
Any other Business
David Airey thanked Michael and Ian for judging the best speech and stated he was retiring from
clubbing as he had 28 to lamb! David asked if there was any other business to discuss before the
meeting was closed.
Adrian Willis proposed to have the 2024 AGM on a Friday night in May followed by a dance. Adrian
stated that we don t often praise our rival Northern Area federations but both Northumberland and
Cumbria host their AGMS which are then followed by a disco dance at Shap and Newcastle
respectively and suggested that we look at a non-school night and have a social afterwards until
midnight. Adrian asked the room to consider this proposal and we will discuss again at a later date.
Will Amos from Penistone YFC asked why National had not thought of an AGM with a dance, to which
the room responded with laughter.
Adrian reported that one night when there had been a great sunset over Morecambe Bay, he had
discussed this with a member of the NFYFC Board of Management regarding the return of the NFYFC
Convention Weekend however their preference is for a DJ in a field! Adrian suggested that grass
roots members would like to visit a North Western coastal resort which has a large metal structure,

theme park and 3 piers! Adrian noted that unfortunately under the current constitution Counties
could not organise this but currently the Northern Area constitution could accommodate this. Michael
Rimmer, Lancashire County President concurred with Adrian stated it is an avenue worth pursuing.
Adrian praised the recent trip to Blackpool organised by the DIY AGM and attend by 5,000 young
farmers noting that it had been hugely successful with no trouble and been praised publicly by the
Lancashire Constabulary on Twitter.
David Airey asked the room to vote on the motion and all were in favour of Northern Area looking into
this further.
Adrian Willis as President Elect thanked the room for a great meeting and was looking forward to his
term in office and the 50th Anniversary year.
To approve the date of the next Annual General Meeting
David stated the planned date of the next AGM is Thursday 9th May 2024.
Ed Bentley proposed. following the earlier discussion regarding the 2024 AGM in our anniversary year,
the new date would be Friday 10th May 2024 followed by a dance at a location to be decided. This
was seconded by Georgina Hobson, Aire Valley YFC and the room were in favour.
Adrian stated to enable us to elect 2 Vice Chairman there would need to be an Executive AGM and
Stephen stated that constitutionally we need to hold a Yorkshire EGM to ensure we invite all the AGM
reps to the meeting. It was agreed to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting date on Thursday 26th
October 2023 at Pannal Golf Club, Harrogate.
David thanked all the contributors for a successful evening and wished all members good luck at the
upcoming County Rally.
Meeting declared closed at 21.. 15pm.

Obituaries
Sadly, we lost two great Honorary Life Members over the past 12 months which is loss
to the federation and the wider young farmer community.
Mr Alan Goldie
Mr Alan Goldie, at the young age of 61 passed away in September 2024. Alan was
originally a member of Great Smeaton Young Farmers, Club and has played a very
active role at Club, District, County, and National level. Alan was enthusiastic about all
aspects of the Young Farmers, movement and held the following roles of office:
YFYFC Finance & General Purposes Chairman 1989 - 1990
YFYFC County Chairman 1991- 1993
YFYFC County President 2012 - 2014
NFYFC Chairman - 1996
We were honoured to elect Alan as an Honorary Life
Member of Yorkshire in 2021 and Alan kindly dedicated I
a trophy for the best contribution to members,
speeches which is awarded annually at the Yorkshire
AGM. Alan was affectionately known to his friends
as "The Cowboy" and was often seen wearing a baseball cap. Alan could often be
found stewarding at the National Convention of YFC long after he retired from office.
Alan was proud to see one of his daughters, Rachel, become National Chairman of
Young Farmers, in 2021- 2022; being the only family to have a father and daughter
to both hold this prestigious national chain of office.
Mr James Hill
Mr James Hill slipped away in his sleep in October 2023 aged 94 years old.
James was affectionately known as Jimmy and was the
longest serving member of Northallerton Young Farmers,
Club, joining in 1941 and being associated with the club
for 84 years. During his time with Young Farmers, he was
Club President from 1966 to 1992, and involved in both
Cledales District and County.
James was a long-standing Honorary Life Member of
Yorkshire serving over 20 years in office and a Friend of

YFYFC. James was a mixed farmer from Wellfield House Farm at North Otterington
and was renowned for his passion for vintage tractors.
COUNTY PRESIDENT
Adrian Willis
Firstly, I would like to thank you all for electing me as the Federations President during
this our 50th Anniversary year.
The year hasn t been without its challenges, with Kirsty Chapple, our Chairman, in her
second term of office having no Vice Chairs for the entire year, so a massive thanks to
her. Moving on, we reformed a Promotion and Skills Committee thus reducing the
workload on the other two overburdened Committees. The now renamed Events,
Finance & General Purposes Committee, Chaired by Worth Valley member Joe Holmes
has had a particularly challenging time, with various events organised but then with
insufficient ticket sales by deadline dates having to cancel them often leaving a cost
burden to the Federation, I must remind you all that when Joe asks you to approve
these plans at the Executive Committee, these events once approved are the
responsibility of the entire Executive Committee and not just Joe and his Vices. These
cancellations have caused loses to our Federation and lead to long discussions when
attempting to plan for the years ahead. Additionally, Joe ably assisted by County
Treasurer Stephen JaNis and the EF&GP have had to draft the budget for the
forthcoming year which has a £28,000 deficit and takes into consideration both the
need to keep costs to a minimum but also the need, with 660/0 of our membership
being Juniors, the need to invest in our Future.
So, a big thanks to Joe, Will, Philippa, Stephen, and the Committee.
Moving on to our renamed Competitions Committee Chaired by Mel Guy an ex-Reeth
member, they have organised, assisted by districts such as Settle & South West all of
our Competitions throughout the year leading to success for the County at both Area
and National Finals and I feel obliged at this moment to mention in particular Coach
Andrew Howe who led Penistone YFC'S Junior Tug of Wars team to their second
consecutive NFYFC victory. Additionally, the committee had the responsibility of
organising the Northern Area Weekend, forming a subcommittee under the
chairmanship of Rachel Nelson (nee Goldie). This was held in Scarborough and won
praise from right across the Area for not only being well run but also turning a profit
without a separate fundraising dance.
So, a big thank you to Mel, Anna, Lizzy, Rachel, and the Committee.
Now to County Deputy President Rachel Wilson who took on the task of organising a
new Promotion & Skills Committee. Rachel took on this task with gusto, seeking out
and inviting a group of 16 to 24 year old members to come together in the
Autumn with a blank piece of paper and look at the Federations needs for the future
with regard to Marketing both internally & externally, Training, multimedia, and the
Federations involvement in the Great Yorkshire Show. The Committee have met on a

number of occasions, and I believe that the fruits of their labour will be seen in the
coming months.
Thanks, Rachel and the Committee.
I also attempted to support the Great Yorkshire Show Committee, I had 4 days at the
show helping on the stand where host Simon Theakston the show President, Mark
Spencer MP PC the Minister of Agriculture, NFYFC for their Dairy Judging and I judged
an impromptu TOW exhibition for the Society.
Now the Executive Committee, excellently chaired by Kirsty. We have had fun &
frivolity, praised our successes but taken the time to have involved and meaningful
discussions when there was the need, so therefore a big thanks to all whom attend
whether in person or via Zoom.
For my part, I have the pleasure of visiting a number of Club & District AGM'S as well
as visiting and in some cases Judging a number of District competitions and Rallies.
I have attended all the County meetings, Area meetings and NFYFC Council meetings
either in person or via Zoom. Additionally, I have attended many County Competitions
and Social events either Judging, Stewarding or just being a spectator, Area & certain
NFYFC Finals where it's always been a pleasure to watch Yorkshire members doing
well. l even had a sneaky trip to the West Coast last May to an unofficial event! I have
also assisted Kirsty in the negotiation of some sponsorship partnerships which I hope
will help bring long term stability to our beleaguered finances. Wearing my Tug of War
Judges hat as also given me that chance to visit our sister Federations in the North, I
was particularly pleased to visit Cambo YFC who hosted the Northumberland FYFC Rally
and whom staggeringly had negotiated £10,000 of sponsorship from the local wind
farm helping to make it a successful day from both the Fun angle and Financially.
In conclusion, my personal thanks, go to Julie, Dash (Karen) and Michelle our staff
members, Kirsty & the Officer Team, Our Trustees, Stephen our Treasurer, and all
those who have collectively made this year the success it has been. It would be remiss
of me not to remember all those at home without whose support I could not have done
the job, my partner Caroline and our two children Ava and Dexter.

YFYFC County President 2023-24

COUNTY CHAIRMAN 2023- 2024
Kirsty Chapple
What an honour it has been to be County Chairman for the second time round - 18
months ago it wasn t something I had even considered and certainly not with a new
baby to plan around too.
The Competitions committee have once again been extremely busy. We started out
the year with the County Rally. Hundreds of members new and experienced
descended onto Thirsk Auction Mart armed with a variety of white coats, tug of war
boots and an array of cookery and craft exhibits all hoping that theirs would be chosen
as the winner. After a tough day of competition, it was Farnley Estate YFC and
Cledales District who triumphed. It was fantastic to see such a high standard of entries
and the number of new members that had turned up to compete. Throughout the rest
of the year, we have seen members competing in Public Speaking, Bowling, and Clay
Pigeon Shooting to name a few. Thank you to all the clubs and districts that have
hosted competitions on behalf of County, and to everyone who has given up their time
to judge and steward, your help is much appreciated.
Members of the Competition committee have also hosted the Northern Area Weekend
this year. It was brilliant to see members from across the Northern Area coming to
Yorkshire for a weekend of competition. Thank you to all the committee members who
gave up their time to put on this fantastic event.
The E, F&GP committee has once again put on a set of fantastic events for you the
members to attend and enjoy. This includes our ever-popular County Quiz with John
Craddock and Ryan Howe acting as quiz masters. We once again saw members
dancing the night away at Club Amadeus at both the Christmas and Spring dances. We
are trialling a new after rally do this year, with a Bar and BBQ staring at the Tug of
War and continuing into the evening, as members please support this and encourage
others in your clubs and districts to do so. As has been said repeatedly, the events can
only be a success with member support, if not our Federation can't sustain itself. As
with the competitions committee, E, F&GP want to put on the events the members
want- let them know your ideas and make their efforts worthwhile.

The Promotion and Skills committee has been launched this year to look at the training
opportunities offered to members and how we can further promote ourselves as a
Federation. A very successful officer training day was held in January which gave the
opportunity for club and distrirt officers to get together and further learn about their
roles. Thank you to all those officers that attended and those who volunteered to run
the sessions. Highly successful first aid training has been delivered in many of our
districts with the final sessions currently being organised. All members who attended
the training have received a first aid kit and hopefully this will allow members to feel
more confident should an incident occur.
This year is YFYFC'S 50th Anniversary and was kicked off in style when nearly 400 past
and present members attend our Anniversary Dinner Dance held at York Racecourse in
April. A huge thank you to Rachel Wilson for organising the event, all our sponsors and
all those who attended. Coming up we also have our church service and afternoon tea
which again gives us the opportunity to celebrate all the good that has come from 50
years of YPfFC.
Finally, I'd like to say some thankyous. Thank you to Julie in County Office, Michelle
Vickers our Safeguarding and Member Welfare Office and Karen (aka Dash) who has
been out and about as Field Development Officer, for their support over the year.
Thank you to Joe Holmes and Mel Guy as sub-committee officers, President Adrian
Willis, Honorary Treasurer Stephen Jarvis, Trustees Andrew, Darren & Paul, Deputy
President Rachel Wilson, Vice Chairmen Kirsty Chapple, and especially Darren who's
been helping out Michelle with member welfare and safeguarding issues. Often, we
forget about the things we don't see, but it's that that allows this Federation to
continue. Lastly, you the members, having visited many of your clubs and districts
during the past year, it is clear there are some exceptional members out there. Take
every opportunity that you get and make the most of your time as a YFC member.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your Chairman for the last year. It has
been an absolute privilege and I have loved (nearly) every minute. Good luck to your
new senior officer team - I'm sure they will be fantastic.

COMPETITIONS COMMIrrEE REPORT
Mel Guy
We have had another fantastic year!
We began the year with the County Rally at Thirsk Auction Mart. where again
members came out in force to compete. It was superb to see members flourish in the
competition and for exhibits to be at such a remarkable standard. It was wonderful to
come together as a Federation and celebrate what amazing talented members
Yorkshire has. A huge congratulations to Farnley Estate once again for winning overall!
In June, we saw Yorkshire travel to Myerscough College to compete at Northern Area
Field Day hosted by Lancashire. Yorkshire showed outstanding team spirt through all
competitions, excelling in Tug of War with four teams qualifying for the National Finals
along with members shining in stock judging and Yorkshire winning the overall stock
judging trophy.
Moving into July, NFYFC held their competitions weekend in early July, where we saw
many members from Yorkshire travel to Staffordshire to compete. Yorkshire had
another successful weekend with many members placing; special mentions to Farnley
Estate who won the Junior Mixed Basketball.
Yorkshire travelled to Hexham Auttion Mart to compete at Northern Area Stockman.
Yorkshire showed great team spirit throughout the day which was rewarded with
Yorkshire bringing home the team trophy along with three other trophies. A special
mention to Jacob Ryder for winning Young Stockman of the Year. Well done to
everyone who competed.
As we moved into August, we had four Yorkshire teams attend the NFYFC Tug-of-war
Finals at Tenbury Show. Well done to all the teams who went to compete. We saw
Penistone winning the Junior Tug of War for a second year and Great Smeaton coming
a close second.
Moving onto September, we have had members competing at Stockman and
Stockman of the Year, Cookery Team Finals and Floral Art Finals at Malvern Show. A
huge congratulations to all the members who went and represented Yorkshire. we had
some fantastic results.
As we began the start of the new competition year, we began with The Rural Skills
Day in October, kindly hosted by Settle. Members competed in a variety of
competitions including sheep dog trials, orienteering and dry-stone walling. We
continued with the static competitions again this year, which were very popular with

members. A huge thank you to Settle for hosting and organising this event. We look
forward to the upcoming day this year.
Yorkshire held their Live & Carcass competition in October returning to J&E Medcalf's
in Halifax. This day was enjoyed by all members with some great individual results, it
also saw some members compete in this competition for the first time.
In the middle of November, we saw members go and compete at the English Winter
Fair in Staffordshire. It was brilliant to see so many enthusiastic members go and
compete which lead to some fantastic results. A special mention goes to the team
consisting of Katie Grainger, Masham, Grace Bryant, Reeth, Reuben Scholefield and
Ethan Scholefield, Calderdale who won the John Spear Trophy for the overall winning
team.
As always, the County Bowling competition, which was held at Ten Pin in York, was
popular with all members, selling out within the first week of advertising. A huge thank
you to all of the stewards who helped to run this event.
As we entered the new year we held the County Public speaking competition at
Harrogate High School. It was fantsstic to see members come to compete in a wide
variety of public speaking competitions. Members battled hard in all competitions, well
done Settle for winning overall. During the afternoon, members and parents also
enjoyed watching and listening to Worth Valley's show choir which went on to
compete at Northern Area Weekend.
This year due to terrible weather saw us run our County Sports competition in
February. Members travelled to a new venue of Wensleydale High School to compete
in mixed volleyball, dynamo cricket and rounders. Well done to all teams who qualified
for Northern Area Weekend.
Again, this year, Harrogate District hosted the Off Roading Challenge at Rudding Park.
We had a good turn out from members who enjoyed driving the gator around the
course. Many thanks again to Harrogate District for organising this event for members.
As we entered March, Yorkshire hosted Northen Area Weekend at Scarborough. It was
a brilliant weekend with Yorkshire coming out in force competing in public speaking,
sports and show choir. Yorkshire had some brilliant results; a special mention goes to
Lucy Goulding for being best Chairman in Junior Reading and best Speaker in Junior
Public Speaking and also Isabelle Bush for winning Junior Member of the Year. Well
done to Yorkshire for finishing second overall. I would like to once again thank the
Northern Area Weekend committee for their hard work organising the weekend.

Moving into Spring, we saw South West kindly host the County Clay Pigeon Shooting
at Brockholes Sporting Clays and Ryedale for hosting County Stockman at Malton
Auction Mart. A huge thank you to both districts for organising fantastic competing
days.
Plans are well underway for this year's County Rally; I am looking forward to seeing
you all there for a fantastic day of competition.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members for your enthusiasm
and teamwork in all competitions this last year, we have had some outstanding results
and brought back lots of silverware to the County. Thank you to club leaders, advisory
members and parents for your continued support and commitment to the Federation
and the Competitions Committee.
I would like to say a massive thank you to Julie for all of her hard work in County
Office and for her continued support to the competitions committee over this past
year. I know at times it hasn't been easy organising competitions this year, but your
hard work and dedication has shone through to make sure all competitions have run
as smoothly as possible.
Thank you to Kirsty for her continued support to myself and the Competitions
committee. I would also like to say thank you to Anna and Lizzy for all of their hard
work over the last year and their support in organising competitions.
I would also like to thank our sponsors who have really helped support all of the
competitions we have run across the year. Finally, I would like to thank all of the
judges and stewards who have given up their time to come to competitions. Without
your continued support and dedication these competition days wouldn t be possible.

EVENTS, FINANCE AND GENERAL PURPOSES COMMIThEE REPORT
Joe Holmes
Thanks firstly must go to my vice chairs Will and Phillipa who have been a reassuring
voice when planning events and running the committee, Julie as always for being at
the end of the phone, diligently sorting everything out and reining in my new whacky
ideas!
We started the year with marketing falling under our
committee and we were proud to have carried on the work
started by former County Chairman Ed Bentley to rebrand
the federation. We acquired a new on brand gazebo, giant
deck chair, flying banners and created a flower wall for use
at events. We worked with YAS by having a large stand at
their Springtime Live event and invited the young
attendees to sit on a vintage tractor and plant sunflower
seeds. Although these young people aren't yet in our
membership age range, we'planted the seed, in the brains
of the parents, showing what we do as Young Farmers and
I'm sure that they will encourage their children to come to
sign up when they turn 10. By attending this event it goes
along way between us and OLJr biggest supporters the Yorkshire Agricultural Society
and enhances the special relationship between us both.
We have also attended the Plough Service at Ripon Cathedral where members pulled
the plough down the aisle and read in front of the crowd. Will Bradley ran as Suzie
Sheep (our federations mascot) in the world's largest Mascot Race at Wetherby Race
Course. This event not only supported YFYFC it also supported the charity Sue Ryder
Manorlands Hospice. Will came 3rd overall, a fantastic achievement.
We have held 2 successful Do's at Club Amadeus where over 2,000 members attended
across the 2 events, bringing in much needed funds to the county's coffers. Thanks to
Tim Weatherhead for standing on the door with us. Members had an enjoyable
evening at Kookys Nightclub at Skipton where 200 members attended and danced the
night away to 80s hits. Although this event didn't go exactly to plan it brought in more
money for the Federation.

Intermediate and senior members attended the Rally Do at Thirsk Auction and had a
blast with DJ Billy Miller and Yorkshire Bars and Events ran a great bar thanks go to
the stewards and bar volunteers who helped the night run smoothly. This year's plan
is to have the event on the top field where all members and parents can attend which
will allow us to gather more money from out of age people. Billys Bingo was well
attended being a sellout event with 150 people attending with bingo dabbers to play 5
rounds of jazzy bingo and play your cards right. Attendees ate pie and peas and
danced to Billys tunes. This event will be repeated this coming year.
The QLJIZ was held at the Anchor at Whixley, hosted by quiz masters John Craddock &
Ryan Howe. Members old and current attended and had a great night concluded by a
raffle, all of which made a good amount of money for the county, whilst also feeding
the members with pie and chips - a good time was had by all.
The last event of the year was the 50th anniversary Dinner Dance at York Racecourse
kindly arranged by Racheal Wilson who by organising the event took the stress of
organisation from the committee which saved time on our meetings.
We as a committee look forward to seeing all reps from districts at our next EF&GP
meeting and look forward to an enjoyable 50th anniversary year.

PROMOTIONS AND SKILLS COMMIrrEE REPORT
Rachel Wilson
This new committee has now had two meetings. The role of the committee is to
promote and market YFC to new members, sponsors, funders, and the general public
as well as looking at the training needed by the federation.
This is an exciting new committee that doesn't have any rules and can come up with
novel ideas to achieve the committee aims and objectives.
It was a great honour to be asked to chair the first two meetings of this committee, as
a previous Development and Marketing Committee chairman I was very aware of what
this committee can achieve and the fun it can have whilst doing it. Whilst I was D & M
chairman, we towed a giant Yorkshire Pudding for 5 days around the County as part of
NFYFC New Members Week. This gained a huge amount of publicity for YFC, involved
every District and was great fun - what can Promotion and Skills come up with for this
year?
We have had a good attendance at the first two meetings. All reps attending have
been in age and have shared ideas and view from their distrirts. Even though we are
one county we have very diverse Districts due to our size and it is good to hear how
clubs operate across the county. We have planned so far junior Activate Days for team
building, an Academy residential weekend for Intermediate/Senior members as well as
a 50th Anniversary Publication.
If you are interested in social media, websites, training, promotion, recruitment and
retention, shows and events then Promotion and Skills is the committee for you.
Please make sure that you are elerted onto it at your next Distrirt AGM or if this is
some time away - please don t hesitate to attend the next meeting. All are welcome
and sometimes we have Pizza and Chocolate! I would like to thank all the current
members of the committee for attending the first few meetings and offering ideas and
suggestions.
A big thank you to Julie in the office for the huge amount of work she puts into to keep
all the committees operating and also to Karen visiting clubs across the County.
By the time this report is adopted at the Yorkshire AGM, Promotion and Skills
Committee will have held their first AGM so I would like to wish the incoming Chairman
and Vice Chairman the best of luck for the first full year of the committee.

GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW COMMIrrEE REPORT
Joe Holmes
Last year's show was an enjoyable one with a good attendance on the stand. We were
grateful to have Your Harrogate Radio on the stand broadcasting live to locals about
what was happening on the showground. In return they frequently plugged YFC and
allowed committee secretary Kelsey Williamson and me as chairman, to take a ride in
a helicopter whilst the hosts reported on the local traffic situation, a good time was
had by all. I also raced DJ Pete Egerton in a pole climbing competition which of course
I won!
We were fortunate to have Mark Spencer MP who came and explained how YFC had
helped him in his career and spoke with current and former members whilst looking
around the stand. We also had the pleasure of showing the GYS Show President Mr
Simon Theakston around the stand introducing them to the charities, and the following
day we welcomed the Show Presidents wife, Mrs Candy Theakston who enjoyed
looking at the displays the members had made. We were invited to a drink's reception
at the NFU and at Carter Jones, the land agents, and it was great to talk about all
things YFC with people there.
Kevin Maltby from Lothersdale YFC brought his drums and cow bells which members
of the public enjoyed watching and getting involved in. We provided nail bashing and
sign the sheep for members of the public to join in with. We had fantastic exhibit
displays from the county rally and Harrogate District came on Wednesday to sell
tickets to their After Show Dance in Harrogate, which was very well attended.
On Friday afternoon we hosted a tug of war demonstration in the cattle ring, all be it
raining and cold, all the competitors had a great time and YAS enjoyed the spectacle!
Overall, we had a brilliant time during the week and showcased the best of YFC, all
the volunteer members who manned the stand loved the week and are looking
forward to this year's show!
