2. Apologies for Absence

Please send any further apologies via Zoom chat or to Ed Bentley.

3. To receive the President’s Remarks – Dave Scruton

Last year when I was elected president, I was immensely proud of being given a huge honour. I wasn’t sure what I was letting myself in for, but I have a great team around me, like the senior officers of Georgie and Ed plus all the others, sorry I’m not right good with names. We had a great year with the competitions and the results at NFYFC have been fantastic. This virus has got in the way, but we can only go up from here. We do need more help at the top level. There’s a huge amount of work that takes place and we need people to step up and help. If you see a job, come and have a go, we will help you.

A moment of reflection of those lost over the past year was held, with Dave making special mentions to Mr Proud, Colonel Young, Hannah Brown, David Brown and others within clubs, districts, and the County.

This will be presented by the County Chairman and Sub-committee Chairmen

The 47[th] Annual Report

County Chairman –

Georgina reported that the Coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on the functions of YFC events and activities only until a few weeks ago. It has obviously been a quiet year for events, so the only notable event was the forum at the start of the year. With opening the event up to an online format meant we had a great line up of panellists from across the county. The forum also attracted an audience from far and wide with an array of questions. We must thank those who participated on the panel and in the audience as well as our sponsors Crombie Wilkinson. Fundraising has been a challenge for clubs and county alike, but we have done two online raffles since the New Year which have raised a small amount for us which help pay a bill or two! Thank you to those that bought tickets and people who donated the prizes.

In what has been a strange year it has been encouraging to see members still sign up and take part in competitions. It is great to see they have embraced the competitions online and still taken part despite the difficulties rural internet brings! We have had a great success at National Finals already this year and we have more members qualified for forthcoming finals so good luck to them. We had a great number of members log on for public speaking to compete and which we opened up for people to watch. We had a huge audience watch the talented members that took part. The event was well received with some great feedback.

Over her year, Georgina has encouraged engagement with the media and used it as a shop window for YFC and would encourage members to shout about YFC from the roof tops at any given opportunity.

There are a lot of people who have helped this past year. Thank you to the senior officers, Ed & Tim who have continued to keep their committees going and provide a membership to our members. The staffing committee who has helped reduce costs and need for last minute meetings. Georgina thanked the staff Julie and Karen, it has been a frustrating year in the office as we utilised the furlough scheme, but Julie and Karen have been very patient with us. Thanks to all the office holders, who have all contributed this year to keep the sub committees moving. Thanks also to Stephen Jarvis, Adrian Willis, Darren Coates, Jean Daniel and Debbie Phillips who have been on the end of the phone when help or advice was needed.

Thank you to the members for what has been a surreal year, in a year when Georgina has been able to reach out to perhaps more members than she could have imagined, with reduced travelling due to the use of zoom. Thank you for the members who have signed up, help continue to run clubs and hope we can get as many members signed up as possible and give a big push in September 2021 to get membership back to where we were pre-covid.

Lastly, Georgina thanked her family and long-suffering husband! Families and partners of county chairs put up with a lot, whether it be out to meetings most nights of the week, or the phone never stops. David has been incredibly supportive and helped me make sure she was free to log on to meetings.

Georgina proposed the annual report and handed over to sub-committees for their reports.

Competitions & Skills Committee

Lauren Howe reported a brief summary as not too much has been able to continue as normal over the past year. The year started with a lot of uncertainty, and we were unsure when we were able to get YFC back to some sort of normality. It feels like things are heading in the right direction with clubs meeting already.

The competitions programme began with a series of online events, with an online Live & Carcase training night which was a great success, followed by the competition, and later in the month virtual Halloween competitions with a great uptake from members.

Virtual public speaking competitions were held in January, with numbers down on what an in-person event would be, but all those who took part had a great time and went onto do well at further rounds.

Lauren motivated clubs to encouraging members to get signed up and taking part in competitions. The committee is looking forward, with virtual County Rally and County Stockman events planned, but will hope to host in-person events for those competitions where it is difficult to do so very soon.

Events, Finance & Marketing Committee

Tim Weatherhead echoed earlier comments of how tough the past year has been. The year began with a budgeted loss of -£12,045 but have has been turned around into a profit of £43,848 due to huge cost cutting exercises and grants, including the furlough scheme. Grants from Harrogate Borough Council and Yorkshire Agricultural Society have really helped the organisation.

Tim thought he was perhaps the first committee chairman to not step foot into an auction mart to hold any dances but has been able to hold two successful raffles raising £400. Tim thanks Georgina for her help behind the scenes to run these.

Tim reported that as the committee looks forward, there are plans for a summer event to get everyone together when restrictions are lifted.

Tim thanked all the parents, club leaders and fellow committee officers for their help over the past year.

Yorkshire and East Riding Joint Great Yorkshire Show Committee

John Craddock, Committee Chairman, reported that there was not Great Yorkshire Show in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the committee were looking forward to the 2021 show (restrictions permitting). The show is planned to be held over 4 days.

John requested anyone who is interested in volunteering on the GYS stand to come forward.

Following the above reports, Ed Bentley seconded the annual report. Ed shared the sentiment of all reports given and looks forward to the YFYFC 48[th] year.

10. To receive and adopt the Accounts and Balance Sheet

The Accounts for the financial year 1[st] March 2020 to 28[th] February 2021 were presented & proposed by Tim Weatherhead. Grant income for the year exceeded normal amounts coming to £29,546 income, although income down in many other areas. Total income was £86,010 for the year.

Total expenditure of £42,162 has been cut with thanks to the staffing committee making hard, but necessary decisions to cut costs leading to an operating profit for the year to £43,848 and Total Charity Funds of £191,195 as at 28[th] February 2021.

The accounts and balance sheet were seconded by Joe Holmes.

11. To receive a vote of thanks to the Retiring Officers

Henrietta Jarvis proposed a vote of thanks to the retiring officers. Henrietta said that is thanks to our County Officers that the county has continued to support their members and admirably they have pulled together for the benefit of the movement.

Henrietta thanked Georgina for all her hard work whilst the federation had no office staff and bring up her young family at home. Henrietta went on to thank retiring president Dave Scruton who has been an invaluable support to Georgina and the officer team, keeping his sense of humour throughout.

12. To make elections to the post of:

a) County President – David Airey

Alex Fryer proposed David Airey as County President. David has always been a constant support to Lothersdale YFC, lend a hand and encourage members in competitions. David has been in YFC for many years, and continues to give his all to the movement

Joe Holmes seconded Alex’s proposed. David has held many positions from Club, District and County, including County Chairman in 1985-86, and will bring a wealth of knowledge to YFYFC.

There were no further proposals and David accepted the role.

b) Deputy President – Adrian Willis

Lauren Howe proposed Adrian Willis as Deputy President with a variety of pictures of Adrian from over the years. Adrian joined Worsborough YFC at the age of 12 years old, taking on the role of scrapbook secretary in his first year and has been involved ever since taking on over 40 roles.

Kirsty Searby seconded Lauren’s proposal. Kirsty spends many hours of her day talking to Adrian who always has the best intentions of YFC at his heart.

There were no further proposals and Adrian accepted the role.

c) Vice Presidents –

It was proposed by Rebecca Goulding (Worth Valley YFC) and seconded by Laura Terry (Winksley Cum Grantley YFC) that the following nominations were elected as YFYFC Vice Presidents:-

Craven District – Tracy Maltby Cledales District – Margaret Iveson Ebor District - Stephen Jarvis Eskdale District – David Smith Harrogate District – Anne Harrison Ryedale District – Andrew Wilson Settle District – Mary Kidd South West – Kevin Kitchen Went Valley –

Rebecca and Laura said a few words about each candidate and the meeting approved the proposal unanimously.

d) Honorary Treasurer – Stephen Jarvis

Lizzy Elgie proposed Stephen as Honorary Treasurer. Stephen has been an integral part of Ebor District for many years and has been an invaluable source of help and guidance for anyone who asks. Stephen has held various roles during his YFC career, including Yorkshire, Northern Area and National Chairman.

Ed Bentley, on behalf of Lois Abbey who was having technical problems, seconded Lizzy’s proposal. Stephen has been a member of YFC since he was 10. Stephen brings a wealth of experience and asked for support of the members in Stephen.

e) Auditors – Hollings Crowe Storr LLP

Having a further term 1 year term, of and agreed 3 year term, Hollings Crowe Storr LLP were elected.

f) Trustees – Darren Coates to be elected for a three-year term

Charlotte Jackson (Danby YFC) proposed Darren as trustee for a 3 year term. Darren has been a member of Loftus YFC since 1992, becoming a Yorkshire Rep in 1997. Darren has held many roles in YFC, and has been a familiar face at Yorkshire FYFC, being County Chairman in 2011. Darren is a continued supporter of the Federation and will be a great asset to YFYFC as we look to build strength following the pandemic.

Rachel Goldie (Great Smeaton YFC) seconded Charlotte’s proposal. Darren is committed to the YFC movement and brings years of experience to support officers, committees and members to grow out of the pandemic.

13. To consider Resolutions:

a) Affiliation Fees

“That the basic levy payable by Clubs and Districts to YFYFC Clubs for the period 1st September 2020 to 31st August 2021 be budgeted to cover 2 years, 1st September 2020 to 31st August 2022”

Tim Weatherhead proposed that the affiliation fees collected to 31[st] August 2021 be extended to cover a further year to 31[st] August 2022 because of the Coronavirus pandemic. The E, F & M Committee felt members had not had a normal competitions programme during the year, value for money and the committee has been able to cut costs and save money which means money is available for the forthcoming year.

Tim reminded that fees will be issued from NFYFC, and none from YFYFC.

Joe Holmes seconded the motion asking for the support of members.

b) To confirm the 2021/2022 Charity Reserves Policy

Stephen Jarvis, Honorary Treasurer, proposed the updated Charity Reserves Policy with the amendments as follows. That money in Closed Club Accounts (held in trust for 7 years) be £5,968, Life Members Award Fund £732, Development Fund £23,551, pre-paid grants held as restricted funds £20,481.

The Trustees confirm the realistic reserve fund would remain the same at £125,498, but this may need to be reviewed again next year.

Darren Coates seconded Stephen’s proposal

c) Amendments to the Constitution

Following approval at NFYFC AGM, increase the upper age limit to 28

  1. That the County Constitution be amended to remove reference to “26 years of under” and replaced with “within membership age”. Sections 8(b) & 8(c)

  2. That the Club Constitution be amended to update the upper age from 26 to 28 years old. Sections 5.

Ed Bentley proposed the YFYFC constitution is updated to reflect the new ages of membership to be for 10-28 years old as referenced in Sections 5 of the Club Constitution. Rather than set the upper limit, it was proposed to specify “within membership age” when referring to co-option ages or other areas of the Constitution in sections 8(b) and 8(c).

Tim Weatherhead seconded the proposal.

d) Honorary Life Members

Alan Goldie

Andrew Langthorne proposed Alan Goldie as an Honorary Life Member of YFYFC. Alan has been a member of Great Smeaton since he was 13 years old, with his first meeting being a talk on yachting. Alan has held many roles throughout his YFC career being both County and National Chairman. Alan is passionate about YFC and is seen supporting the Club. Tom Pattison, Cledales District Chairman, seconded Andrew’s proposal. Alan is an advocate of YFC and supports all clubs across the County.

Debbie Phillips

Georgina Fort proposed Debbie Phillips as an Honorary Life Member of YFYC. Debbie first joined YFYFC as a field development officer but has got stuck in and helped wherever she could over her 23 years of service. Debbie has support members, staff and county officers with policies, planning and ensuring members are getting their value for money from their membership.

Debbie was the driving force helping us learn from the past, shape the future and continuously improve. On many occasions, in County meetings, we have commented about how Yorkshire are ahead of the curve, ahead of NFYFC, and this is with great thanks to Debbie.

Georgina continued, Debbie is an incredibly kind and generous person, has done so much for the Federation and she deserves to be honoured for all her hard work.

Ed Bentley seconded Georgina’s proposal. Debbie joined YFYFC after many years in safeguarding but has always had a connection with rural life. Debbie always strove to bring out the very best in the members.

Ed wished Debbie and husband Keith well but hoped paths would continue to cross in the future. Ed said the words spoken this evening about Debbie could never go so far as to express our true gratitude and thanks to Debbie for her 23 years of help and support.

14. To announce the winner of the Alan Goldie Trophy

Alan Goldie, following discussion with fellow judge Debbie Phillips gave members feedback on speeches received this evening. Alan and Debbie both enjoyed Henrietta’s vote of thanks along with Lauren Howe’s proposal of Adrian Willis, Lizzy Elgie spoke very well through her parts. In the end, Alan and Debbie decided to award the Alan Goldie Trophy to Lauren Howe.

Alan also thanked the Federation for awarding him as an Honorary Life Member

15. Any other Business

Ed informed the meeting of a Zoom meeting on 20[th] May 2021 to share an update on Covid-19 rules and guidance, expecting an update from NFYFC with any changes.

Paul Gill thanked the Federation for the honour of being awarded the Time and Talent award this evening.

16. To approve the date of the next Annual General Meeting

It was agreed that the date of the next AGM should be Thursday 12[th] May 2022.

Dave thanked everyone for attending the meeting and looked forward to seeing everyone one again soon hopefully shouting on the tug of war lines soon.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

PATRON OF NATIONAL FEDERATION OF YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUBS Her Majesty the Queen

Please convey my warm thanks to the members of The National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs for their kind message, sent on the occasion of their celebrations to mark the Club’s 90th membership year from September 2021 to August 2022. As your Patron, I was pleased to learn that clubs have been meeting again, following a very challenging period throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. I send my best wishes to you all for a most memorable and enjoyable year marking this notable milestone.

Elizabeth R.

COUNTY PRESIDENT David Airey

What a year that was!

I started out my President’s year judging the best in show at the County Rally, just happened good judgement was good enough as I couldn’t taste some of the exhibits but they certainly looked good, and I hope they tasted as good too.

Moving on, it was a first for me judging online in the Northern Area Field Day and I was glad to see a good turnout of Yorkshire members competing.

Fortunately, we are back to some sort of normality with Public Speaking and Sporting Events which is great to see. I’m looking forward to seeing you all at County Rally and District Rallies. It is good to be back competing in person and I hope we go from strength to strength.

Obviously, it’s hard under a new regime and a lot of us are new to young farmers, we’ve had a fairly quiet two years with Covid but we have a lot of young new members, who will obviously become the older members who will run the organisation and we need to help them to get there.

What we have got to remember is that we were all once young members and in our day, we had older members to help and guide us.

Lastly, a message to all club leaders, mums and dads, and older members, just remember we are a fledgling organisation again and it is going to take time to get to where we were, so help out, not hinder, please don’t be that pushy parent or club leader, try and be helpful and remember what it was like when you were a junior member.

Finally, all the best for the future, hope to see you at forthcoming events, County Rally and the Northern Area Field Day at Darlington. Good luck to everyone and remember, this is the best rural youth organisation there is!

COUNTY CHAIRMAN 2021 - 2023 Edward Bentley

A royal year!

When we look back to the start of the year, how different YFC and the world looked! The shape of YFYFC and clubs across the county were constrained to online and restricted meetings due to the Coronavirus pandemic – who knew what was going to happen after the third lockdown was put in place by the Government?

As I took the reins from Georgina, I was unsure how Young Farmers Clubs would bounce back, and there were a lot of mixed feelings if the young farmers movement as we knew it was still relevant to our members and community. How could I have doubted this? If anything, it has made us all stronger.

Lockdown after lockdown, with little social interaction other than close family, friends, and colleagues/school mates, it’s been a breath of fresh air to see everyone enjoying themselves and having a good time when travelling out to members and clubs. Young Farmers Clubs were started after the war to bring rural communities together and offer a support network to otherwise isolated young people. The young farmers movement feels more relevant than ever as our National Federation celebrates their 90[th] year.

Sadly, the easing of lockdowns and restrictions didn’t come soon enough for the start of the competition’s year, and we were forced to have a virtual County Rally. Although entries were reduced, it was great to put a programme of competitions together that members enjoyed. A huge well done to Worth Valley YFC for winning the club trophy. A virtual County Stockman quickly followed, with successful members heading to Cumbria for the first in person competition, NA Stockman.

Our first face-to-face competition was held in July 2021, with the return of Tug of War. Although we had a small number of teams, this turned into a social and training session, which has received tremendous feedback. Come the autumn, the first of two new competitions to YFC were held – the Rural Skills Weekend. The weekend was hosted by Settle District and included orienteering, dry stone walling and sheep dog trials. It was great to see a new competition being added to the calendar, and thanks must go to Anna Booth for all her hard work in putting this together. In October, the County Live and Carcase competition saw record entries, compared to recent years, with the event held at two new venues. Successful members progressed to the NFYFC English Winter Fair in Stafford.

Ebor District YFC put together a sell-out County Bowling Competition at Tenpin, York, with near 160 members competing from all corners of the county, won by the up-and-coming Knaresborough YFC. The second new competition, Off Road Challenge aka Gator Handling was held three days later by Harrogate District YFC at Rudding Park kindly sponsored by Ripon Farm Services. County Public Speaking and Sports Day returned in January 2022, with members competing to their normal, high standard across all age groups. Congratulations to all our members who have since gone onto Northern Area and National Finals. To round off the competition’s year, Ebor hosted the County Clay Shooting, again with fantastic entries, although the snow did put a dampener on later in the morning.

July saw the return of the much-anticipated Great Yorkshire Show – now with an extra day! John Craddock and the YFC @ GYS Committee put on a fantastic showcase for YFC alongside other likeminded farming/rural support charities. The 2021 show saw another pair of Royal visitors – The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall. We had the greatest of pleasure in meeting HRH on the YFC stand with members from Reeth YFC who put on an excellent dry stone walling display, and even let The Prince of Wales lay the final stone, much to everyone’s delight.

In October 2021, YFYFC’s first dance/do was held at Club Amadeus, with the addition of a Halloween Dance. This brought in much need funds for the Federation and was quickly followed in December 2021 with the Christmas Dance. As I write this, we will all be looking forward to the return of the County Rally Dance in the spring. With no collection of Affiliation Fees for 2021 due to the extension of membership by 12 months to 2022, we have been fortunate in diversifying our income from grants, including Furlough, and also a legacy of £5,000. Junior Activate Weekends returned in November 2021, which sold out in a matter of hours. Great feedback was received from the members who all enjoyed abseiling, climbing, orienteering, zip line and team building activities, with a follow-up event being held in the Spring 2022 for further members.

The E, F & M Committee continue to promote YFYFC to members and public with the addition of new branding and marketing materials, along with a new-look digital members news, delivered straight to the inbox of all members and supporters.

A big focus of my time this year has been on supporting clubs, club officers and the members. Without members, there is no young farmers. The Competitions and Skills committee have successfully rolled out the Club Accelerator Programme, with funding from Rural Youth Trust, aimed at supporting club officers who may be new to the role, or need refresher training.

We have been fortunate in securing a grant from the Yorkshire Agricultural Society to allow us to continue the Club Accelerator Programme, host an additional Junior Activate Weekend in Autumn 2022 and roll out our new District Engagement Officer programme to all Districts. The DEOs will support club officers and act as mentors at district/county meetings.

As the year came to a close, we had over 1,000 members signed up to YFYFC, with the forecast looking very positive and suggesting we may close the YFC year on circa 1,500 members. I am staggered at the huge uptake in membership which is a testament to the hard work of the members, club officers/leaders and committee members who have invested their time in YFC.

Thank you to Julie in County Office, and Karen (aka Dash) on the road as Field Development Officer for their continued support. I must also thank all the sub-committee officers, President, Honorary Treasurer, Trustees, Adrian, Kirsty and Jean, Darren as our Interim Member Welfare Officer. Most importantly, thank you to the members for coming back to YFC, doing all they do each week and embracing it to the full!

Let’s build on this year’s success and create a YFC fit for the next 48 years.

COMPETITIONS & SKILLS COMMITTEE REPORT Lauren Howe

Looking back what a year, we’ve had! With Covid still looming in the background it was hard to know what we’d be able to achieve this year but luckily, we’ve managed to hold most competitions safely- face to face.

The year began with a brand new competition- The Rural Skills Weekend. This was hosted by Settle District and involved a variety of different competitions including sheep dog trailing, orienteering and dry stone walling. A huge thankyou to Settle District for organising the weekend and we look forward to running this weekend again this year!

Next, we had the delayed national finals for flower arranging, cookery, tug of war and sports, stockman & clay pigeon shooting. A HUGE well done to Penistone Junior TOW team & Farnley Estate Junior Kwik Cricket teams who were both crowned National Champions.

As usual the Live & Carcass competition was held in October with a change of venue, this year by kind permission of both Langthorne’s and Mirefold Farm in Northallerton. This was a great day had by all members with many new members competing at county level for the first time.

One of the most popular competitions of the year was the county bowling held at Ten Pin in York. This was a sell out within the first week for advertising, with over 150 members competing. A big thanks to Ebor for hosting and to the venue for their help.

Rather than the usual Landrover handling, this year Harrogate District decided to hold an off roading challenge using gators at Rudding Park. Like the Land Rover handling but as we were finding it more and more difficult to find the Land Rovers this proved to be much easier. As always Harrogate did a great day of hosting and plenty of members turned out for the competition.

In November we had members competing at the National Live & Carcass where, as a team, Yorkshire came 3[rd] which was another great result. Well done to all those members involved in that team.

Kicking off the new year we held the County Sports and Public speaking at Harrogate High School, it was great to see members and their families turning out for the day, a true sense of YFC was in the air as competitors battled it out to be crowned Yorkshire Champs! Thank you to all the judges and stewards who help bring the day together, we then had many members qualifying to Northern area as well as National finalsWell Done!

Into the Spring we saw Craven District host Stockman of the year and Ebor held the Clay pigeon shooting, again two popular competitions which members enjoyed entering and we had members qualifying to further rounds later in the year.

With District rallies well underway, I am excited for the county rally to see the full county together to celebrate what a great federation the Young Farmers is!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members, club leaders, advisory members and parents for their commitment to their clubs. Also, to YFYFC and the office staff for their continuous hard work while we all work together to get members back and involved with their clubs! Thanks to Ed for always being at the end of the phone to help me, also Mel and Anna for being fantastic Vices. Our thanks to the sponsors who have really helped us get some funding to help towards running the competitions.

GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT Lizzy Elgie

The 2021 Great Yorkshire show was a successful one for YFC. Whilst the 4 days had a restricted attendance there was a similar amount of traffic to the stand as we have seen in previous years, and we are hoping that the higher capacity of the 2022 show will allow for greater numbers to the stand especially with the right attractions on the stand; including the return of the ducking stool, YFC exhibits and a tractor.

The highlight of the 2021 show for us has to be the visit from HRH Prince Charles on to the stand on the Thursday afternoon which brought greater numbers on to the stand and allowed us to showcase what we do.

It was also great to have the different agricultural charities on the stand; Yellow Wellies, Farming Community Network, Addington’s Fund and the Samaritans; many of which different clubs within the county support through their fundraisers. It was noted that it is important to maintain these strong relationships with these charities as not only do we work collaboratively to educate on agriculture, but they help to fill out our stall and get involved in the activities that we have on the stall.
