Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the branch during the year

It has been another challenging year, with the impact of Cost-ofLiving issues foremost. Despite this, the Branch has been active locally, represented at the annual Battle of Britain Ceremony on the 18/09/22, at which the CO Defence Medical Services Whittington kindly laid the wreath on behalf of the Branch. Branch members attended a memorial service to commemorate the 100 Anniversary of birthday of Colin Grazier, a local seaman RN who was instrumental in obtaining the Enigma machine during WWII. The Chairman and Welfare Officer attended an Act of Remembrance ceremony on the 11/11/23 at the Tamworth memorial. Branch Members including the Chairman also attended the Act of Remembrance on 13/11/22 in Tamworth St Editha’s Church.

Membership: Tamworth Branch won the Branch Membership award at Area Conference. Mr Len Brotheridge the Branch Membership secretary has worked particularly hard this year to increase membership and it is excellent that his efforts have been recognised outside the Branch.

War Graves – Wiggington Cemetery Tamworth Thanks to two members of the Committee’s tenacious attitude, we have been successful in meeting with the War Graves representative for our area, and the 32 War Graves in Wiggington Cemetery have now been cleaned.

Wings Appeal collections:

Static Wings appeal collections have been held in Ankerside Shopping Centre and ASDA throughout the year as usual, however, collections were also held at Morrisons (the Swadlingcote Community Champion) which resulted in a welcome £3765.55p which made our Grand Total collected for Wings appeal this year £5140.53p Our thanks go to ATC Sqn’s 1211 and 1122 for their help. Thanks also to 351 Sqn who were schedule to assist the weekend following the sad death of the late Queen Elizabeth II but this collection was cancelled. Thank also to members of the Branch who gave up their time to help with collections.

The Flarepath Club has re-opened following COVID-19 and has been holding various activities twice a week and Saturday Entertainment evenings for Members every two weeks. Saturday Lunch at the Club has also recommenced as has the Monthly Sunday Lunch. Both are well attended and valued by members.

Welfare Activities

The Branch Welfare Officer has had a quiet year, making 5 visits once restrictions were lifted and has made 2 applications to the Benevolent Fund which were both successful.

Sadly, several Members have died this year and the Branch continues to provide Guards of Honour outside Crematoriums and Churches, and organised coffin Flags and Standards to be in attendance when required.
