FRIENDS OF THE HARRIS ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2022 Structure, govemanee and management The Friends of the Harris Museum, Art Gallery & Library, Market Square, Preston, is registered with the Charity Commission INO 5037261 and constituted by rules adopted on 16 October 1974 las amended on 10 April 20191. The Society is administered by a Management Committee as set out on page 1. The Trustees of the Charity shall be the President, Vice Presidents, Chairman and the committee members. A Trustee (excluding the President and any VI Presidents) must be a member of the Society during their period of office. The society in general meeting shall elect committee members with the total number of members being a minimum of six Ibul unless otherwise determined by a resolution) shall be a maximum of fourteen. The Constitution of the Friends of the Harris requires that two members of the Committee retire each year. Temporary vacancies among the Trustees can be filled by the Trustees subject to this being approved at the Annual General Meeting following. Objects and activities and public benefit The objects of the Charity shall be lo advan education and encourage and promote the advancement of the arts, culture and heritage by supporting and promoting the activities of the Harris Museum, Art Gallery and Library Preston {hereinafter called the Harris). In furtherance of the objects bul not to otherwise the Iruslees shall have the power to.. Generate and provide financial support for the Harris at the discretion of the Trustees as may by law be deemed lo be charitable. Encourage and promote the offering of gifts lo the Harris. Achievomgnts and pgrformance Income from subscriptions generated this year was £1,765 {2021." £2,965). Total income geneoted from all sources was £79,87612021. £263,683). Friends of the Harris contributed £11,000 towards the Harris programmes in 2022. This helped to lever in over £229,000 from Arts Council England as part of the National Portfolio Funding and support continued delivery of Harris Your Place Activity Plan. The Harris has been closed lo the public throughout 2022 to enable the Harris Your Place works to begin and there has been a mixed focus on the preparation of the building and delivering activities and engagement with the community. The highlights of 2022, made possible through the generous support from the Friends of the Harris towards the Harris Your Place project include.. Decant of the Harris collections, carefully checking, cleaning and safely packing over 100,000 collections for safe storage during the course of the works. Appointment of Conlon Construction as the main contractor, they started work in August 2022 securing the site with external hoarding, protecting the sensitive part of the building and starting to strip out of internal floors and mezzanines. Finalising exhibition layouts and displays for re-opening Appointment of the Fit Out Contractor, BECK to lead on the install of the interior design. A public programme of activity has continued during closure and the highlights for 2022 include.. Establishing the Harris Home from Home al the Guild Hall and continuing lo offer the library and IT learning centre. Visits lo the library over the course of 2022, lotalled 75,977. Regular activity and school holiday workshops ran throughout the year and the Harris library continues lo attract the highest number of visitors in Lancashire.

Commemorating the history of lexlile manufacturing in the Preston area, the mural Celebrates the journeys, long and short, that Courtaulds Ltd employees made drawing attention to the diversity of the workforce. Harris art work has been loaned to other galleries and institutions whilst closed including.. Gallery Oldham, Patti Mayor 1 $0 exhibition continues 10 Sept 22 28 Jan 23, 5 paintings on loan. 4 paintings reglazed for exhibition in August. All Harris Patti Mayor works including a sketch book and works on paper digilized for first time, uploaded lo Art UK and promoted on social media. Atkinson loan dates confirmed, oilslsculpture 27 May 2023 - 2 March 2024, Watercolours, Jan-march 2024. 27 Ocl - meeting at the Atkinson to see the spaces and discuss shortlist of oil paintinglsculpture for loan. 24 Nov- Atkinson curator visited MOL to shortlisl watercolours for loan. Dec - finalised oil painlinglsculpture loan list and completed valuations for GIS application. 27 works in total. Prep 2 Maud Sullor works ready for collection in Jan, A Radical Decade.. Rochdale Art Gallery in the 1980's, 4 Feb - 7 May 2023. Visions of Ancient Egypt touring exhibition continues, which includes Pastimes in Ancient Egypt by Alma-Tadema. The Sainsbury Centre of Visual Arts, Sept 2022 - 1 Jan 2023. Laing Art Gallery, 22 Jan- 12 May 2023. A series of Christmas themed workshops ran during December 2022, including fell wreath making, lino printing and silk scarf dyeing. The workshop series attracted audiences who have not engaged wlh the Harris before. The support provided by the Friends of the Harris during this pivotal point in the Harris, history has been invaluable and we are grateful to the Friends of the Harris for their continued support. Financial review A summary of receipts and payments during the year is shown on page 5 of the accounts. Reserves polley It is the policy of the charity to maintain unrestricted funds, which are the free reserves of the charity, at a level that provides sufficient income to cover grants payable and adminislralion costs and lo respond to emergency applications for funding by the Harris. The amount of free reserves held at the year end was £25,910 12021.. £31,922). Risk management The Trustees have examined the major strategic, business and operational risks which the charity faces and confirm that systems have been established lo enable any necessary steps to be taken to lessen these risks. Independent examination The accounts have been independently examined by Nicola Mason, FCA, DChA of MHA Moore and Smalley, Chartered Accountants, who has indicated her willingness to continue in office. ReBponsibilitie8 and basis of report As the charity's Iruslees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 20111'the Act'l. I report in respect of my examination of the charity's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 14515llbl of the Act. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities.. Statement of Recommended Practice applicable lo charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland issued in October 2019, the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland IFRS 1021, the Charities Act 2011 and UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practice. The financial statements have been prepared to give a 'lrue and fairf view and have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only lo the exlenl required to provide a 'lrue and fair vieW. This departure has involved following the Accounting and Reporting by Charities.. Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland issued in October 2019 rather than the Accounting and Reporting by Charities.. Statement of Recommended Practice effective from 1 April 2005 which has since been withdrawn. The financial statements are prepared on a going concern basis under the historical cost convention, modified to include certain items at fair value. The financial statements are presented in sterling which is the functional currency of the charity and rounded to the nearest £. The significant accounting policies applied in the preparation of these financial slalements are set out below. These policies have been consislenlly applied lo all years presented unless otherwise staled. Funds Unrestricted funds are available for use al the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity and which have not been designated for other purposes. Incoming resources Investment income is accounted for in the period in which the charity is enlilled lo receipt and the amount can be measured with reasonable certainly. Other income is accounted for on an accruals basis as far as it is prudent to do so. Grant income is recognised when the charity Is entitled to it. Resources expended Liabilities are recognised as resources expended as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the Trust to the expenditure. All expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all costs related to that category. All expenditure is directly allocated to the relevant categories and no apportionments are considered necessary. Irrecoverable VAT is charged against the category of resources expended for which it was incurred. Trustees No remuneration or other benefits were paid to the charity's Trustees or people connected with them. Trustees, expenses of £3912021.. £281 were reimbursed during the year. There were no other related party transactions in the year.
