Carlton Husthwaite Village Hall Annual Report 2025

This year has seen a dramatic improvement to the Village Hall and its facilities. In June 2024, we were successful in three out of the four grants applied for, and put on a reserve list for the final grant. The successful grants were from Lottery Awards for all, VCSE Groundworks and the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority Shared Prosperity Fund for Climate Action.

These grants have enabled us to re-configure the existing toilets and cupboard to provide a dedicated accessible toilet, install roof / loft insulation across the whole hall, install modern electric heating, LED lighting throughout with sensor switching in toilets and entrance way, install replacement double glazed windows, frontage and patio door, replace all guttering, soffits, facia and cladding. As part of the electrical installation for the heaters, new consumer units have been installed.

We were advised in December 2024 that the Mayor had allocated new funds, and so the final grant from the Shared prosperity Fund for Community Buildings was released. This grant has enabled the new cupboards in the entrance and the updated kitchen. A patio area at the rear of the hall has also been installed.

The hall, kitchen and entranceway have been repainted, so many thanks to the volunteers that have helped with this. The toilets and snooker room will also be repainted in due course. We now need to arrange for new window blinds and kitchen / toilet flooring to finish everything off.

Installation of broadband internet was finally accomplished via a new telegraph pole. This is free to access for users of the hall, and wifi extenders will allow outside access at event, such as card payment. It has also enabled us to take advantage of WiFi heating control.

Now the electrical work has been completed at the hall, E-on has been able to complete the work required for a smart meter, so billing will be more accurate and straight forward.

Our coffee morning on 17[th] May will be our official opening for the refurbishment. North Yorkshire Council has kindly donated money towards this, and will be supplying a photographer to record the event for their (and our) publicity.

The village hall committee would like to thank everyone for their continued support, especially the events team for their generosity in supplying cakes and for running the coffee mornings, as without this we would not be able to raise the money required to keep the hall going.

The monthly coffee mornings continue to bring together around 40 or so people from our community and neighbouring villages. The Christmas soup and pud lunch was again very well

attended, and the craft stalls and jam/ marmalade sales have provided welcome extra income. A big thank you goes to the providers of the items for sale.

Thanks also to Maurice Duffield for organising two tractor runs, one fully supporting the hall, and another where the breakfast profits went to the hall.

Weekly yoga and circuits classes continue to be popular, and a new weekly pilates class has started. The twice monthly craft club is now established.

The snooker / billiards club continues to be popular, and has an increased membership of 38. The old light fitting was sold and the money used to purchase a new players board. The number of in house snooker competitions has increased this year to 3 (handicapped singles, scratch singles and handicapped doubles) and there are 2 billiard competitions. Thanks go to Will Hopwood for organising. These competitions are now generating a small income, and once engraving the boards is complete there may be some surplus funds to purchase some new equipment. Carlton Husthwaite won the snooker league, which is a great achievement, and we hope to regain our second snooker team next season.

At last year’s AGM, it was agreed that we should work towards becoming a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). With the grants and refurbishment taking priority this year, progress has been slow, however, a new Constitution, based on the Charity Commission’s model template, has been written and is awaiting agreement by the Village Hall Committee prior to being submitted to the Charity Commission for approval.

We are now looking forward to our summer BBQ on Saturday 5[th] July, and hope that the community support the event and enjoy the day.
