Group Scout Leader Report – 2020/21
What can I say, when we had our last AGM, I don’t think any of us would have thought we will still be in the middle of the pandemic when we have the next one. A Huge and Massive BRAVO to all the Leaders, Helpers, Scouters and above all Parents/Guardians for making the last 12 months or so, another successful one for the Group.
We continue to demonstrate how adaptable, agile and resourceful Scouting is. From Zoom to Outdoor only and finally, indoors at last. It’s been a long slug and very challenging for us all especially for us, having to juggle work with volunteering.
Section Leaders
At the start of last year our Beaver leader – Emma, stepped down due to personal and family reasons and we had couple of parents that took over. Unfortunately, their tenure didn’t work out. Since their departure Anita and Sally have been holding the forth with the help of other Section Leaders. This had helped in ensuring the colony remained opened. However, this arrangement is far from ideal and we need new adult volunteers to join us so that we can remain open and admit more young ones on the waiting list to the Colony.
Additionally, in order for us to continue to grow offer more adventurous opportunities to potential Scouters, we need more adult volunteers. We have a long list of youngsters waiting to join us but we’re unable to take them in due to this shortage.
Membership
We continue to grow as a group even during this awful period. As mentioned above, we have a waiting list and have the capacity to take on more youngsters, but we are limited by our level of adult volunteers. Currently, we have vacancies for Leaders in all our sections as well as Executive Committee and would encourage anyone that has few hours a week to spare to please joining us.
Scout Hut
We continue to make improvements to the hut and this has been made possible by the letting of the hut when not in use, providing us with regular income.

Our plan for the hut’s development is on-going. We’ve completed the project to add toilet facilities to the building. The next phase is the build of appropriate access ramp and making the unit let to be self contained and provision of kitchenette to enable safe cooking activities during section meetings.
And finally, we are on the lookout for a Part time Caretaker to look after the Hut for us.
Finally, once again, I would just like to thank leaders, assistant leaders and helpers for all their hard work over the past couple of years. Without you we wouldn’t be able to give the Scouters all the adventurous experiences they have participated in and all that are in the pipeline.

Treasurers Report
1[st] April 2020 – 31[st] March 2021
I started in the role of Treasurer following the resignation Mr. Neil Ainsworth at the 2019/20 AGM held in July 2020. I wish to thank Neil on behalf of the Group for his hard work and diligence during his tenure and for taking the time to prepare a careful handover of the accounts.
The Group started the year with monetary assets of £12,478.72 and finished with £28.871.85, an increase of £16,393.13. This excellent result is due to receipt of generous grants from the Dulverton Trust of £3062.00 to upgrade the headquarter toilets and £9670.21from West Lancashire Borough Council to support the building as a community facility during the Covid lockdown period. These funds have been a crucial financial lifeline as lockdown prevented other fund raising activities such as Christmas bag packing from going ahead.
Subscriptions (all sections) fell significantly from £6917.95 the previous year to £3654.60 in this period with a corresponding fall in activity costs (all sections) from £3386.90 to £759.92. The scouting programme for all sections moved to online Zoom meetings with better than expected levels of engagement from our young members and reduced activity costs with additional support of parents & guardians at home.
Scout Association Capitation fees also reduced correspondingly from £2542.00 in 2019 to £1653.00 in 2020 although both amounts were paid in this accounting period.
Hiring of the hall to the Furry Tails business continued throughout the period and a two month rent free period was granted to help alleviate business pressures resulting from Covid.
Sadly the demise of the Yeti Explorer Unit which had been operating from the scout hut further reduced hire income.
Building work on the toilet block improvements began earlier in the year and reached substantial completion by January 2021. The Contractor was paid interim payments of £3000.00 in December 2020 and £2000.00 in January 2021.
The finances of the Group are at first glance in a healthy position. However improvements necessary to make the building more
accessible to other community interest groups and the ever present cost of ongoing building maintenance can and will quickly erode the funds available. Notably, whilst the building is safe to use, the roof is leaking badly and needs replacing which will involve specialist contractors to remove the existing asbestos sheeting. There is fire-fighting and electrical improvements required and permanent disabled access ramps to be constructed.
I would take this opportunity to ask any local Contractors who are willing to undertake this work sympathetic to our position to please come forward. We would very much welcome any charitable help.
Finally, Scout Association governance recommends that warranted section leaders like myself are not ideally placed to be undertaking the duties of Group Treasurer. I would therefore ask any parent or guardian interested in undertaking this role as a volunteer to please step forward. It’s all quite obvious once explained.
