Chairman's Report for the AGM 20[th] July 2025
The Friends was established in 1968 with its sole aim of ensuring that our muchloved church remains in good repair. The main work over the past 12 months has been to remove the excessive moss from the North roof above the chancel and also to replace over 100 stone tiles. The Parochial Church Council (PCC) is currently awaiting faculty approval for more moss removal and roof maintenance above the North side of the nave together with some outstanding stonework repairs. This is planned for later this year and will complete the bulk of the 2021 Quinquennial work required by the PCC’s architect. The next Quinquennial Inspection is due next year.
We organised four events during 2024, the first being an organ recital by Andrew Horton from Winchcombe in April followed by The Cantamus choir in June. Then, in August, another excellent cello recital by young Millie Hesketh prior to her enrolment at the famous Chethams School of Music in Manchester. Finally, in September, a concert was given by the local Avon Singers. We made a surplus on each event so a big ‘thank you’ to all the Friends who supported our efforts.
In 2025, we are trying some ‘new’ events, firstly with the St Eadburgha’s Day walk on 15 June from Ebrington to Broadway which attracted over 60 walkers – an excellent result for an inaugural event, all thanks to Andy Haslam and his team. A week later, on 21[st] June, we were treated to a visit by Da Capo, an ‘acapella’ chamber choir from the Warwick area which was also well received with over 50 in the audience. Then, on 13[th] July, we have Michael Bochmann’s Pro Anima 9 piece string orchestra, of which more later.
The Thursday teams of cleaners, flower arrangers and gardeners have been working hard and I thank them all for their invaluable work throughout the year. We are still very short of cleaners but the flower arranging team has gained another member to whom we are very grateful.
The Trustees have met, as usual, twice since the last AGM. More than ever, the Trustees are aware of the need to increase our membership, currently standing at around 130. I am hopeful that our recent St Eadburgha’s Day Walk and the Da Capo choir, both of which were popular and well received will, ultimately, result in more new Friends. It is vital that we continue to attract new Friends and thereby hopefully increase our support, income and reserves so that we can continue to assist the PCC in its responsibility for the church by funding all repairs and maintenance.
Our close relationship with St Michael's is as important as ever and we are grateful to Rev. Shellie Ward, and her team on the PCC for continuing to support us in achieving our aim of fully maintaining our beautiful Grade 1 listed building and churchyard.
I am also indebted to my fellow Trustees for their invaluable commitment during the year and to you, The Friends of St Eadburgha’s, for your crucial support.
I look forward to seeing as many Friends as possible at the AGM at 6.45 on Sunday 20[th] July after which we will as usual be serving wine and soft drinks.
