We<br>work closely with the City of Durham Parish<br>Council on these matters.|

## **Achievements and Performance**

|Summary of the main<br>achievements of the charity,<br>identifying the difference the<br>charity’s work has made to<br>the circumstances of its<br>beneficiaries and any wider<br>benefits to society as a<br>whole.|Para 1.20|The Trust’s responses to planning<br>applications have been influential in<br>improving some and causing others to be<br>refused.<br>The Trust works closely with related bodies<br>such as the Durham Museum, Old Durham<br>Gardens, the Wear Rivers Trust and the<br>National Trust which has recently acquired<br>Crook Hall, an important heritage site in the<br>City.<br>It is also represented on the Coordinating<br>Committee of the Castle and Cathedral<br>World Heritage Site. This year marks the<br>Trust’s 80thanniversary and it is also the 50th<br>anniversary of UNESCO’s World Heritage<br>Convention and we are working with the<br>Coordinating Committee to convene a<br>conference focusing on the future of the<br>World Heritage Site.<br>The Trust will mark the actual anniversary of<br>its foundation on 9 November with a civic<br>reception.<br>The Trust has co-sponsored two walking<br>guides for the City:_Coal Stories_explores the<br>extensive reminders of the coal industry in<br>the City;_The Seven Hills Trail_provides a<br>route around the hills that surround the City<br>and gives glorious views of the Castle and<br>Cathedral.<br>All these activities are designed both to raise<br>the profile of the Trust and also to involve as<br>many citizens as possible in issues that<br>affect our historical and natural heritage.|

**Respective** The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. **responsibilities of** The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year **trustees and examiner** under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the 1993 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: 

   - examine the accounts under section 43 of the 1993 Act, 

   - to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 43(7)(b) of the 1993 Act, and 

   - to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

- **Basis of independent** My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given **examiner’s statement** by the Charity Commission.  An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records.  It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters.  The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below. 

- **Independent** In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention 

- **examiner's statement** 1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements: 

      - to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the 1993 Act; and
