1.19|Every week Trustees scrutinise all the
relevant planning applications validated by
the local planning authority and respond as
appropriate. We focus on ensuring
conformity with the policies of the_NPPF,_the
_County Durham Plan_and the_Durham City_
_Neighbourhood Plan._These are designed to
protect the historic and natural heritage of
the City of Durham and its surroundings. We
work closely with the City of Durham Parish
Council on these matters.| |||The Trust holds open meetings, including an
AGM, three or four times per year to inform
members of the public about planning and
heritage-related issues. We also provide
members with bulletins three or four times
per year giving details of our activities and
providing information about the work of
related bodies.

applications have been influential in
improving some and causing others to be
refused.
The Trust works closely with related bodies
such as the Durham Museum, Old Durham
Gardens, the Wear Rivers Trust and the
National Trust which has recently acquired
Crook Hall, an important heritage site in the
City.
It is also represented on the Coordinating
Committee of the Castle and Cathedral
World Heritage Site. This year marks the
Trust’s 80thanniversary and it is also the 50th
anniversary of UNESCO’s World Heritage
Convention and we are working with the
Coordinating Committee to convene a
conference focusing on the future of the
World Heritage Site.
The Trust will mark the actual anniversary of
its foundation on 9 November with a civic
reception.
The Trust has co-sponsored two walking
guides for the City:_Coal Stories_explores the
extensive reminders of the coal industry in
the City;_The Seven Hills Trail_provides a
route around the hills that surround the City
and gives glorious views of the Castle and
Cathedral.
All these activities are designed both to raise
the profile of the Trust and also to involve as
many citizens as possible in issues that

It is my responsibility to: - examine the accounts under section 43 of the 1993 Act, - to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 43(7)(b) of the 1993 Act, and - to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. - **Basis of independent** My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given **examiner’s statement** by the Charity Commission.
