NEWCASTLE AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY
No productions were staged in 2023, as a decision had been taken to augment the Society’s financial reserves by concentrating on fund raising events. Six events were organised, including a quiz night, a cream tea, and a ceramics evening. The income from these events, plus the hiring out of props and generous donations from the Chairman and Cromartie Ltd, enabled us to add over £5,000 to our cash reserve. Early ticket sales from a production planned for 2024 generated further funds, leaving us with an end of year reserve of £16,206.
In 2024 NAOS presented two shows : Strictly Musicals in February and Beauty and the Beast in October. The aim of the first was to raise funds towards the second. Both were excellent productions and were well received by audiences. As planned, the profits from Strictly, alongside the fund raising already undertaken, were used to off-set the loss generated by Beauty. This loss was anticipated due to the expenses of the production, general rising costs, and a restriction placed on ticket prices by the rights holder. The end of year accounts show a remaining reserve of £409.
During 2024 the majority of the existing committee decided that, after their many years of dedicated service, it was time to step aside and allow a younger and more energetic group to take NAOS forward with fresh enthusiasm. A new Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer were appointed on 20 December 2024. The
retiring committee wish them every success in their future productions.
