MIDDLESBROUGH CATHOLIC FELLOWSHIP ANNUAL REPORT April 2021 – March 2022

Covid 19:

All clubs, Masses, holidays, days out (Easter Walk) and other activities were severely disrupted due to the variety of Covid 19 restrictions which came and went during the year.

The monthly Mass continued to be from St Mary’s Cathedral, Middlesbrough right through until December 2022 when restrictions started easing. We were very pleased to be able to welcome a congregation back to our Masses from September, albeit under social distancing restriction, which sadly meant no food provision! We remain very grateful to Mgr Gerard Robinson for accommodating us throughout this period of restrictions, for saying the majority of the Masses for us, and for allowing us to use the Cathedral’s excellent live-streaming facilities. We also thank the Knights of St Columba for operating the live-streaming for us. It has been fantastic to celebrate the Eucharist for our members and friends, many thanks to all involved, I know a lot of people have taken a great deal of joy from hearing or seeing (on film) our Fellowship members offering their bidding prayers. In January we started to resume our parish Mass visits, with Canon Alan Sheridan welcoming us to St Therese of Lisieux at Ingleby Barwick. The parish had offered to provide an after-Mass buffet, but the rise of Omicron meant that this was postponed at the last minute. In February we visited St Alphonsus in North Ormesby, and it was great to be welcomed by so many in the parish – there were approx. 67 people in attendance. The parish were also able to very kindly put some food on for us. We were also able to resume the 100 club at the February Mass party. Our Masses will continue to around the parishes from now on, as long as restrictions permit.

Clubs:

The clubs had resumed in early 2021, but were suspended again over the Christmas period due to the Omicron surge. As a result all the parties and the pantomime visit were cancelled.

All members were given a Christmas present to the value of approximately £30 as we incurred no party or pantomime costs.

Transport:

We did have an issue with the door of the white bus which meant it was out of action for a little while. It was also noted that it was starting to look a little shabby, with some paintwork and bodywork issues. The front wings have been replaced, and some work done to the paintwork. The moss on the roof of the white bus was also removed and it does now look much better. There has been an issue with the clutch recently, and given the age of the bus it would be prudent to start considering replacement soon. The yellow bus has generally been fine, although it does have an intermittent electrical issue which is proving difficult to resolve.

Shop: The Shop has been open Mondays and Fridays when restrictions permitted, although it did close during the Omicron surge as the staff felt it appropriate to do so.

We now no longer have a regular driver for the shop van, so are unable to pick up and drop off items.

The Shop is always our main source of income at the best of times, but during Covid 19 this has been particularly so. Thank you to Betty, Jean, Helen and all the other helpers for their hard work in making our Shop such a success.

Activities:

All activities throughout the year were again cancelled, including the Easter Social Evening, the Easter Walk, the Christmas parties and the pantomime.

We look forward to the time when we can share happy events with all our members and helpers.

Holidays:

Both holidays this year were cancelled due to neither venue being available. We intend to arrange some day trips out this summer.

Fundraising:

We were unable to organise any fundraising events and were entirely dependent on donations – thank you very much to all who donated.

Other Business:

Bereavements:

Sadly during the past year we had the following bereavements of many people connected with the Fellowship.

Sheila McMann Stella Rimmer John Elsom Terry Hannaway Brenda Williams Mark Crosby Mary Mulholland Andrew Lombard Cath Barrett Kerry Everett Alan Foster Judith Shaw Dennis Dawson

May they rest in peace.

Big Birthdays:

2 of 2

We celebrated some “big” birthdays during the past year. Many congratulations to Katy Demoily and Mark Purvis who both turned 40, and to Dominic Jones who turned 60!

Lastly, thank you, as always, to our unsung heroes/heroines who do so much behind the scenes to help the Fellowship run smoothly.

Shop workers previously named. Steve and Jean for overseeing our accounts. Donna for our end of year accounts. Committee Members, and all our helpers.

Thank you all for making our Fellowship a happy and safe place for our Members.

Chair's Report to Annual General Meeting 8 November 2021

  1. The Officers for the Group remain, as above, for the forthcoming year.

  2. The Group consists of 11 regular members and 3 regular carers. Other carers supported on occasions.

The group continues to use Redcar Rugby Club as a base for general Wednesday evening activities. Our sincere thanks are once again offered to the Committee, Steward and Bar Staff of Redcar Rugby Club for the warm welcome we receive on these occasions. The Club provides a pool table, and other pub games for the group and permits us to bring in our own food when we wish to do so. On some evenings members of the group generously supply tasty snacks to help celebrate special occasions.

During the year every effort is made to engage the members in a variety of activities within the limits of our funds.

The atmosphere of the group on all occasions is full of enthusiasm, friendly and funloving. Members are eager to take part and carers are inspired by the many phone calls and text messages between evenings out. Members continually express their thanks wholeheartedly for their activities.

I cannot praise too highly the consistent, freely-given and enthusiastic commitment of the carers: Stephen Askins and Paul McGeady, and for the occasional but much needed support from: Shane McGeady, Martin Askins and Ann Corey.

Unfortunately COVID limited activities during the year. But members have used social media, text and phone to keep in touch.

Incidents of concern

There were no recorded incidents, accidents, or causes of concern during this year.
