History

Founded in 1948 as the South Westmorland Stage and Screen Society, the organisation adopted a constitution on 11th May 1973 and gained charitable status on 19th June 1973. The name was changed to “The Heron Theatre”. The constitution was adopted in June 2007 and amended_ in 2015, 2019 and 2024.

The Object of the Charity

The object of the Heron Theatre is the presentation of performances of drama and music as well as films, exhibitions of art and other cultural activities. The building is also available for use by the community.

Governance

The Heron Theatre is open to all people. It is licenced by Westmorland and Fumess Council for the provision of public entertainment and sale of alcohol under the terms of the licencing act 2003. The trustees of the charity are the licence holders and the designated premises supervisor for the sale of alcohol is Peter Mann. The authorised capacity of the theatre is 78. The charity has a safeguarding policy that is reviewed annually. There is a membership scheme totalling 537. The charity is administered by a management committee for trustees elected from and by the members at the annual meeting.

In the year to May 31st 2025 the trustees were:

There are no liabilitles. Assets comprise monetary items £63110 and non monetary assets total of £553700 (2024: £56856 and £553700).

The charity's trustees consider that an audit Is not required for this year under section 144 of the Act and that an independent examination is needed.

BASIS OF INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT My examination was carried out in accordance with the genera! Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination inchides a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanaiions from the trustees conceming any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view and the report Is Imited to those matters set out In the statement below,
