The object of the league shall be to relieve patients, outpatients and former patients of Mold Community Hospital who are sick, convalescent, disabled, handicapped or infirm and generally to support the charitable work of the said hospital.
We are a committee with maximum of 25 members and the officers of Chair, Treasurer and Secretary are elected from within this committee. Members of the public may become members of league upon payment of a fee but do not become trustees. All committee members are trustees of the charity. They are representative of the local community with an interest in the local hospital and are recruited through personal recommendation or as representatives of local community interest groups.
When a request for a purchase is received, this is put to the committee and a majority agreement is required. If there are questions over the purchase this is put to the hospital representative for replies.
All requests are noted within our meeting minutes along with the approximate price, if there is no clear guide to the price then further enquiries must be made. The majority of requests have been agreed but some requests are seen as either unnecessary or not within the remit of the league. Whilst we purchase equipment, other purchases are made which benefit the patients and staff. Recently expenditure has included an extension to the car park and refurbishment of an interior courtyard garden which is enjoyed by all visitors to the hospital.
We provide gifts for patients at Christmas and assist with expenditure to celebrate other occasions eg St David’s Day.
Most of our income in 2020 came from bequests. Whilst we were still able to have collection boxes, and donations, fund raising events and income from our tea bar ceased. We were lucky to hold a raffle at the beginning of 2020 which netted us a profit. Our accounts are presented at our committee meetings and any investments must be agreed to by the committee. We keep expenses to a minimum with honorariums being paid to the Secretary and Chair. When the tea bar is operating valid expenses are paid to the manager, this is an unpaid post held by a committee member and the tea bar is staffed by unpaid volunteers from within the community, so running costs are kept minimal.
When the charity was set up a constitution was written, we have used the Charity Commission and Relate (the umbrella Organization for Leagues of Friends) for advice and guidance especially since the advent of the pandemic. Regular newsletters have been sent to our committee during this time, the officers being available by phone or email, and meetings have now restarted.
