Chair’s Report
Wow, it has been yet another successful year in more ways than one. Jamie has consolidated his place with RCS, in spite of frightening us all, by informing us of his move to Worcester with his success in gaining Head of Music at the Royal Worcester Grammar School. So far, so good with all the travel arrangements he has put in place. We have continued to go from strength to strength under his leadership, and long may this continue
Not only has Jamie consolidated his place with RCS, but Ivan has as well. Ivan has simply gelled!! Not only is he our accompanist, he is a well known and established organist and professional musician in his own right, and we are grateful that he is able to commit his time with us on a Monday evening. Ivan has also been able to lead small groups of us at various functions. He conducted a few of us at Aspen Manor Care Home earlier in the year, and we have committed ourselves to singing for them in December. The joy of attending these types of events, is that we are out in the community and hopefully, enhancing people’s lives and spreading the word about RCS.
As a result of our success, we have not only increased our membership, we are now in the enviable position of having a waiting list of prospective singers wishing to join us and we are probably at our maximum level of singers at present.
In addition to our 3 concerts a year, plus our Christmas concert at Normanton, we also continue to sing at weddings – having attended 3 so far in 2025, one in Oakley, and the other 2 in Hambleton, the latter 2 of which relate to the current year. These weddings have resulted in a new tab on our website entitled ‘hire our choir’, which has cost little and proved to be productive.
Not only weddings, we have had the enormous privilege to sing at the funeral of one of our former members, Caroline Godfrey, and also the funeral and memorial service for our own Paul Butler, and it is so important that we continue to make ourselves available for these types of commitments.
Well, I had been promising to step aside or retire, whatever you wish to call it, for quite a while and the opportunity arose a couple of months ago. You have had at least 12 years of my chairmanship, and that is truly enough!! When I took over all those years ago, it was as an emergency treasurer. Another member took on the role of Chair, but unfortunately, that office only lasted a few weeks and as a result, I became acting Chair and Treasurer, which was not ideal. The accounts were in a very fragile state – there were insufficient funds to pay the rent, and there were very few members. However, we eventually managed to overcome the difficulties, and I say ‘we’ as it was very much a team effort and the appointment of Suzanne as Treasurer. Suzanne has been an incredible treasurer and is now enjoying her own ‘retirement’, although I am pleased to say, she remains a trustee. My thanks go to all of the committee members, past and present, for their never-ending support during this time, their love and the odd shoulder to cry on.
We went through Covid and lockdown, but continued to ‘meet’ online; we then restarted RCS outside, having managed to acquire the Showground as our rehearsal venue. At the time, it was the only venue that could afford us the minimum one metre space between each member! And what a wonderful venue it has turned out to be.
I have said it before, but am happy to repeat myself, it has been an honour and a privilege to work with such a well-oiled team of trustees and I wish to express my sincere thanks again to your committee, who work tirelessly on your behalf, but also to all of you, the members, who have at
times, had to put up with my moaning and cajoling, but hopefully, encouragement. The charity is in a strong position moving forward and I feel very comfortable in handing over.
It's been an honour to act as your Chair, and in due course, I will formally hand over to your new Chair, Claire Symington. I wish Claire every success in her new role and I know you will provide her with the same support with which you have provided me.
