MAOS Annual General Meetin
Secreta
ort
2024
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are pleased to welcome you to the AGM where we will be looking back
over the period of April 23 until March 24.
We started off in Sept 23 with My Fair Lady, directed and choreographed by Michael Kirkby and
musical direction by lan Abbott. My Fair Lady is a beautiful musical about transformation,
patronage, gender politics and class, based on George Bernard Shaw's play, Pygmalion. Acclaimed
Professor and confirmed bachelor Henry Higgins makes a wager with his linguistic colleague Colonel
Pickering that in six months he can pass off "gutter snipe" Eliza Doolittle as a duchess at an embassy
ball. Through her transformation process, Eliza forges a deep connection with Colonel Pickering and
most especially with Professor Higgins. However, she finds herself in a difficult position, now too
refined to go back to her old life and not with any means or desire to live life as a lady of leisure
especially by herself. The musical ending is left ambiguous, yet it is beloved for being both one of
the cleverest and one of the most romantic shows of all time. The show was well known to some
and unknown to others but think we can all agree by the end it was enjoyed by all. Audiences
commented how much they enjoyed the show and its nice to see again some new members of the
ensemble join the society and stay with us when the show finished.
At the beginning of December we had the annual Christmas coffee morning, this event was very
well attended and enjoyed by all, thanks again to Amy and the members of the committee that
organised the event and all those running the stalls and the kids club for providing the
refreshments.
In Jan 23 we were back on stage with our pantomime "Dick Whittington" directed and
choreographed by Michael Kirkby with musical direction by lan Abbott. As usual the show brought
just the right amount of magic and fun and the audiences loved it. With Daisy, Sophie, Steven, Mark,
Paul, Cameron, Louise, Emily and Tom leading the cast once again supported by a fabulous
ensemble. The show did have some challenges with unexpected fire alarms, illness in the cast and
the last-minute switch around of cast and scenes unexpectedly, it really kept everyone on theirtoes.
But the audience loved it and didn't notice the mad dashes being made back stage, it really was a
great performance. We were also happy to welcome back our youth ensemble for the pantomime,
its was great to see so many familiar faces from our kids club. It5 great to have them back on stage
with the adults once again.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Jo, Amy, Marie, Lindseyand Louise for all
their hardwork running the youth performers club. We cant wait to see what they have in store for
us next but I'm sure it will be fabulous.
We've also started our 3rd year of the Morley Lotto, which has been well supported again by the
members and over 72 numbers sold for the monthly draw, each draw has been taking place on the
st
first Tuesday of each month with I prizes of £18 and Prizes of £7. Thanks to you support the first
year of the lotto raised near to £500 for the society so thank you!

In April our members attended the NODA weekend at BridSington, it was lovely to see so many
people there and the weekend was enjoyed by all that have attended. If you have never been before
we welcome you to come and join us all next April.
th
Finally, we ended our year with our presidents evening on Sat 18 May. This celebrates the first
year of our current president Edwin Kirkwood. The night was held at the Thornfield Park and
attended by 50 members and friends of the society. The entertainment was produced by Rachel
Kirkwood and a team of talented society members, both adult and youth performers. Anyone who
saw the show I'm sure will agree that it was fabulous and really made the night. Thanks to
everyone involved in the evening, organi5ing a night like this it take5 a lot from everyone but I'm
sure you will all agree it is worth it.
Well, that ladies and gentlemen is our year in a nutshell. As you all know shows are not just about
the performers, so much work goes on prior to show week, back stage and in rehearsals to make
the final performance. So just a few thank you's... I would also like to say a big thank you to Tracey,
Hayley, Wendy and Andrea who organise the costumes for our shows, its not an easy job, so thank
you, they all looked fabulous. The backstage / production team who have transported Michael's
vision to the stage and their backstage crew who made them come to life at show week, supported
as always by Andrea and her team who has ensured everyone has all the props they need and when
they needed them. Linda and her helpers who have kept everyone hydrated at rehearsals, June, and
Joyce who run our front of house for our shows, Linda and Joan who have run our VIP nights and
your committee who have 501d your tickets, publicised your shows and managed your society so we
can keep on performing. Finally thank you to you all, a society is nothing without its members. So
thank you everyone and here's to another fabulous year!
