Annual Report for Next Century Foundation accounts to 31 July 2025

We have lived through some particularly dire days in the Middle East from the end of 2023 up to and including 2026 thus far. We have seen some desperate times and the Next Century Foundation has been in the thick of it. Syria, Gaza, Sudan and Iran to name but the most harrowing of the recent conflicts. We are not immune to emotion and some of our teams have been stretched to the limit during these dark days. However, we are conscious of the fact that our work makes a difference on two levels. Not only does it help underpin moves towards peace and reconciliation, it also provides succour to those who feel most marginalised and who are in the midst of the quagmire created by the often-misjudged response of the leaders of the world to the failed states, insurgents and terrorists that challenge them.

There have been many changes for the Next Century Foundation. For example, we have set up a new Trafalgar Group as an ultra-confidential platform for face-to-face engagement and that will meet once a year in Cornwall. There are also new practical constraints. The ability of the Next Century Foundation to fund travel in the foreseeable future will be severely restricted. As ever the main constraint has been funding. That said we seem to be holding steady because of the continued support of the outstanding Wineman Foundation reinforced by our other regular smaller but substantial donors than such as Ambassador Alastair King-Smith, Rev Larry Wright, Joseph and Samuel Morris. Nonetheless, we are still without a large donor of the kind we have had in the past and without that underpinning we shall have to cut our cloth accordingly. We do have prospects. We are working on engaging a more substantial donor and we are hopeful that things may change.

Meanwhile, there is much work to do and our mainstays remain. We have our work with the United Nations which is increasingly important. We also have our summer conferences on Zoom which we will undoubtedly continue for the foreseeable future. We are also likely to continue our regular blogging which does matter because it often enables us to think outside of the box as well as honing the skills of our team.

Indeed a key aspect of the work of the Next Century Foundation is the opportunity it gives to young postgraduates to hone their skills and to understand that there is a need for integrity in the world. The importance of this cannot be overstated. The number of former interns of the Next Century Foundation who now occupy senior positions in policy making is remarkable and we know that their engagement with the regular weekly working group meetings of the Next Century Foundation has helped shape their lives. Perhaps in some ways this is the most important thing that we do.

We hope for better times and cling to militant hope as a core belief of the Next Century Foundation. It has always been there. We have an obligation to hope. We are realists but we

are not defeatists working without an underpinning of idealism. There are many pragmatists in the world that are disabled by their environment; there are far too few that keep faith with hope in these difficult days. In a future dominated by too much gloom, hope is our commitment in the sure knowledge that hope can but help make a difference.

Notes:

  1. Staff costs include HMRC charges

  2. Some office costs fell outside the year end for 2024

  3. The Conference listed in 2025 is that hosted by Mr Vivian Wineman at the Royal Automobile Club

  4. Accountancy fees for 2025 were above a level the NCF could afford. We plan to use an independent examiner rather than a chartered accountant where possible in future. In 2024 there were no fees because our income was below the threshold at which the Charities Commission requires independent examination.

  5. 10.The Charity is an unincorporated charity, registered with the Charity Commission in England and Wales (Charity Registration Number 328704). The address of the registered office is Angwinack, Ludgvan, Penzance TR20 8BN. The nature of the Charity's operations and principal activities are listed in the Trustees Report.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT FOR THE YEAR AS AT 31 JULY 2025

Independent examiner's report to the Trustees of The Next Century Foundation ('the Charity')

I report to the charity Trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 July 2025.

As the Trustees of the Charity, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). I report in respect of my examination of the Charity's accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Charity as required by section 130 of the 2011 Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
