FINANCIAL CONTROL
The financial control during the P8ritxl was initialty har￿l￿d by Jo M8rk 8nd ih8n Amand8 F8nn8r-Solornon who
joined JMI in May 2022. The Trustees We￿ given updaies on the JMI budget and eash flow figures through()ut the
period. The JMI financial reports lor Ihe year ending 31￿ December 2021 were signed on the 16thd September 2022
and circulated to all the Trustees.
Andrew Jankel, Chairman of the Jankel Group C￿lInUed to support the o)st of ernployng the JMI Financial
Controller who work5 at the Weybridge head office until the end of December 2022.
JMI comrnitted to reirnbvrsing the J8nkd Group for 50% of the stsff costs of the JMI Financial Controller from 1
January 2023 to 31¥1 March 2023 tfrw¢after JMI to pay th& fvll amount for th¢ Flnanclal Controller.
We are incredibly grateful fcw Ihe suppcwt from the Jankel Group during Ihis time.
FUNORAISINGAND CASH FLOW
Jennifer J8nkel continues to donate £2,167 8 monlh which h85 been J much-needed support lo JMI during the
period.
JMI received £30.170 of funding Irom the Rothchil¢J Foundation in May 2022 for work to be carried out on the JMI
archives. This amounl was added to the £2.000 received from the National Archives. During the financial year only
part of the archiving work was completed resultsng in only £13.268 being paid lo the speaalists. An amount of
£18,902 is to be carried over to April 2023 to continue with Ihe archiving work during Ihe rest 012023.
The JMI Youtr Big Band were delighled lo receive support from mulliple sources during the year including. A11
Aboard Shop with donations totalling £5,860, the Childr&ns ￿ Committee Charitable Fund who don81ed £2,895,
thè Jèwish Youth Fund £2.000 and th• SU￿SsIU1 application for funding for th• yèar 2023 from Shorash of £2,000
lor the JMI primary school project- Zingtl
A very special thanks must go to Shoresh Charitab18 Trust for their r￿n￿nUed support by granling £9,983 for the JMI
general funding.
Feundats'en support grtrw wilh the Alan Rind Foundation donating £5,OCK) to the JMI Marth fundraiser 2022. The
Kirsch Foundation donatÈd £3,500 and h8v8 p18(IgÈd thair support for 2023 and 2024 ttstalling £10,500 ov8r thr68
yèars. David Dangoor's, Exilarch's Foundation havè allocat8d £20,￿0 ovaf thè naxt 5 yaars. Tha first paymènt of
£4,000 was received in October 2022 and allocated to ￿neral funding.
The Rayne Foundats'on donated £S.000 whKh JMI have allocaled lo support Ihe music prograrnmes al Nightingale
Hammerson residential homes. £2.CKJO was paid to Nightingale leaving an amounl of £3.000 to be paid out in May
2023.
The JMI 8nnu81 knndr8sing 8v8nl on the March 2022, which w8s-A celebration of Jewsh Classic81 Musicians"
to honour JMI past p￿Sidents raised over £69.000 of which lh& above £S,(N)O ￿11 be used to establish a new music
therapy fund at Nightingale Hammerson.
The amount of £15.000 from h2rieli was paid directly io SOAS Univer• and then shared 50150 with JMI on beha
of the Joe Loss Lec¢ureship. This generous donation will be continued for the years 2023 and 2024.
SOAS University Deed of Gtft to JMI was ren8wed on th8 23rf August 2022 which serAJf85 the 8gr88m8nt for th8
n8Xt fiv8 yea15. Th8 agre8rn8nt was supported unanimously by the JMI Ttusle8s.
JMI successfully also renewed the tenancy agreement with SOAS Universty of London which was signed in
October 2022 for six years.

screened by JMI wilh a filrn by Christopher Nupen & Allegro Films which investigates the fruilful but complex
lalionship between Jews and Gemian Music.
JMI partnered with The Jewsh Chronicle and Five Leaves Bookshop to bring iogether a successfvl evenl. Yahrzert
70 with word rnusic and film. This took Pla￿ al thg Brunei Gallery Theatre at SOAS.

SPRING SCHOOLS 2022 Isun 3rd April- Thurs 7th April)
The mov8 of th8 Sumtner Sch(KAs to Spring proved to be ch8118nging. Cowd is still causing gr88t uncertainty
and the applications were slow. JMI ptsslponed Golden Peacock untsl August 2023.
Ot Aztsy and Klezfest Continued but the numbers were lower compared to previous years. It has been decided
to keep the JMI summer schools al their regular point in Ihe (Xlendar to enaNe longstanding regular students
to the courses to attend during the summer break.
We express our heartfelt thanks to Gil Karpas, Marketing and Events Manager for the enomious effort that he has
made in expanding the visibility and notoriety of the JMI programmes.
JMI YOUTH BIG BAND
JMI Youth Big Band had 8 hugely succe5sfvI year with highlights that induded 3 sold out concerts IPizz8 Express
Soho - April, Vortex Jazz Club- Seplember, and JW3- Decernberl.

The JMI Team are incredibly proud ol the successful Yiddish Song School project "Essex Zingtl"
Throughout
February and March 2022, the projecl was carried out in 18 Primary and Secondary schods across Essex and
involved in-person work3hops al each as well 83 the creaiion of online learning resource5.
The project culminaied in a final perfomiance involving Klezmer band Don Kipper and children at Theydon Bois
Primary School. The evenl was slreamed live ￿ 811 Ihtr other partitypaling 8¢hoc48 as wèll as to a wider audience of
JMI'S online followèrs.
F8blM8rch 2023- JMI hèld anothar succéssful ￿n911 projèct in Canvèy Island. E￿x. Tha pro9ramma rè8chad
240 children at 4 loeal primary schools,. Canvey Junior, Winter Gardens, Northwick Park and William Read- wth
a large audience ol parents and family members who all enjoyed the final con￿rt.
ARCHIVING
As a result ol a Scoping Grant awarded by Hanadiv Rothschild in Jan 2022, Dr Ellie Pridgeon and her associate
Eva Eicker started the work ol assessing JMI s extensive archwe ol bwks, CDS, records, manuscripts and other
material, both at SOAS and Luxfords st￿age larylily in Weybri(Ige.
We express our heartfelt thanks Raphael Knapp for the enornous effort Ihat he has made in expanding the visibility
and notorie¢y ol the JMI progrdmmes.

THE FUTURE
JMI decided to extend the original year end of 31* December 2022 to 31￿ March 2023. This decision will allow the
annual accounts of JMI to coThespond exactly the NPO acwjnting year of 141April to 31&t March.
The JMI Team works extremely well together and is particularfy excited with the tx)sitive news of th8 success of the
application to Arts Council to be included in Iheir National Portfolio funding for 2023-2025.
It is important lo neta that thè JMI Vision and Mission Statemènt will bè rèvièwed with somè of thè nèw Trusteès
and existing JMI Team dunng April 2023.

genres of Jewish music ranging from ancient prayer chants through the Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jewish
experiences to da5sical music, the music o115rael and music suppressed by the Third Reich. In each genre there

Trustees review regularly its cash fesources and endeavours to maximise any Inte￿St from fvnds not required in
the short temi.
Reserves Policy
The Trustees have adopt8d 8 policy that the tharity's reserves shall cover necessary costs and commilm8nts
during an LJnfore5&8n period ol drfficulty. Th8 Trusteès aim to maintain hold thè level ol reserves èquivalènt tts
three months ol expenditure.
This report has been prepared having taken advantage ol Ihe small company's exemption in the Companies Act
2006. The report was approved by the Board on and is signed by order of Ihe Trustees.

ending 31st March 2023. JMI is extremely honoured to be accepted into the Arts Council National for the next
three years.

JMI is an intemational resource Cent￿ for Jewsh Music. The JMI archive of recnrds. CDS and books continue to
help in an advisory capaci¢y on music of all genres. JMI is fortunate to maintain contact with many experts in the
differenl fields ol music lisled on our websile.
Sin¢gre thanks ars duè to individual donors and famity ¢haritabl$ trusts who support (wr mission to transmit the
music of tha J8wish p￿p1a from generation to gèneratson. We hope that wè wll havè their continuèd support as
attendees at our events and remain donors. This genemsrty helps the JMI hardworking team of staff and
volunteers to achieve the exuting future that we all foresee in the coming years.

Over the past 2 years, JMI has substantially increased its cash ￿Seryes allowing the Trustees to feel increasingly

1.1 Accounting conventlon

applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard
applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland IFRS 1021 issued on 16 July 2014 las updated through Update
Bulletin 1 published on 2 February 20161 ,the Financial Reporbng Standard applicable in the United Kingdom

The significant accountsng policies applied in the preparabon of these financial statements are set oul
below. These policies have been cnnsislently applied to all years presented unless othewse stated.
1.2 Golng concern
The financial statements have been prepared on a goirvJ C￿nCeM basis as the trustees b81ieva that no
material uncertainties exist. The trustees have considered the level ol funds held and the expected level of
income and expenditure for 12 months from aulhorising these financial statements. Certain Iruslees have
committed lo give financial support lo ensure thal there are sufficAenl ￿SerVeS for the Charity to be able to
continue as going Concem.
1.3 Charltabl• funds
Unrèstnetad funds a￿ availablè for u$8 at th8 dlscrètion of the Injstèès in furth&ran¢e of thg ggneral
oblectivès of thè Charity and which havè not baen dasignated for other purposès.
Restricted funds are funds which are to be used in accordance with Specif￿ restrictions imposed by donors or
which have been raised by the Charity for particular purposes. The cost ol raising and administering such
funds are charged againsl Ihe specrfic fund. The aim and use of each restricted fund is set out in the notes lo
the financial statements.
1.4 Income
All incorning resourc85 ar8 included in the Statetnerbt of Financial Activttses ISOFAI when th8 Charity is legally
entitled to the income after any perfomiance conditions have been mel. the amount can be measured reliably
and il is probable that the income will be received.

support costs which are not attributsble lo a sin9le aclivity are apportioned belween those activities on 8 basis
