Oblectlves Founded by Gay and Peter Hartley in 1988, Gay & Peter Hartley's Hillard5 Charitable Trust is a Leed5 based charitable organisatlon that makes grants to local charities in 11 counties in North and Central England. Hillzrds was a family glocery business founded by John Wesley Hillard irb 1885. John Wesley was the grandfèther of the Trust's co-founder and Its Iirst Chairman Peter Hartley. Hillards traded for 102 years until 1987. In 1972 it became a publlc limited company trading on the London Stock Exchange. In 1987, after a fieytely contested battle, Hlllards was taken over through one of the first hostlle take-over bids in the UK. At that time, Hillaid5 plc employed more than 7,500 people across 40 supermarkets In 40 towns. Based on the publlc-spirited values of the company's founding family, the Trust'5 mission is to 5UPPOrt social welfare opportunities in the towns once served by Hillards stores. The Trust makes grants to independent, IcKal, non-proflt, voluntary and community based charitable organlsatlons that share the Trust's vision of enhanclng social support in those cornmunitles. The Trust seeks to make grants speciflcally In IS towns in West Yorkshire, 6 In South Yorkshlre, 5 In Lancashile, 4 In North Yorkshbre, 4 In Lincolnshlre, 3 In Nottlnghamshlre, 3 in Derbyshlre and 2 in Northamptonshire. The Trust also makes grants in Peterborou8h, Brownhills and Leicester. Summary of actlvltles FY 2021 Gay & Peter Hartley's Hillards Charitable Trust made 81 grants durSng the year with a total value of £73,018. Income was £ 75,933. Slr Norman Bettlson QPM, MA, M8A agreed to accept appolntment as a Trustee in October 2021. Slr Noiman agreed to accept the role of Chair, 5uccedlng èctlng Chalr, R C Hartley MBE. The Trustees were pleased to have been invited to attend the launch of the inshore Iifeboat'j W Hlllard IV, from its base in Scarborough In October 2021. The lifeboat was funded from past donations to RNLI from the Charltable Trust.
