## **Structure, governance and management**
The charity is governed by a Trust Deed adopted on 24 July 1987, amended on 7 December 2006 and 24 June 2014.
## **Method of recruitment and appointment of trustees**
A new Trustee may be appointed by a resolution of the Trustees recorded in the minutes and signed by the new Trustee and such record shall be conclusive evidence of this appointment.

## **Objectives and activities**
## **The charity's objects**
To advance the education of students resident in Zimbabwe by the provision of financial assistance, and of accommodation or assistance in the provision of accommodation, to enable such students to further their education in Great Britain.
To provide financial assistance towards charitable educational projects within Zimbabwe particularly but not exclusively the Zimbabwe Educational Trust Resource Centre in Bulawayo.
## **The charity's main activities**
ZET supports grass roots organisations in Zimbabwe to deliver projects for vulnerable and marginalised young people. Projects are education focused and vary to include; life skills, vocational skills and work experience, health, birth registration and access to basic human rights, as well as teaching about conservation agriculture.
## **Public benefit statement**
In setting our objectives and planning our activities our Trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and in particular:
- l Child protection and the advancement of education and opportunity in Zimbabwe,
- l Tackling the effects of poverty,
- l Girls’ and women’s empowerment.
## **Achievements and performance**
## ZET UK:
- l Continued to support our three partners through fundraising efforts in the UK as well as collaborative capacity building support.
## Trinity Project:
- l Delivered Covid information and promoted vaccination programmes in collaboration with local health services.
- l Worked with community members and organisations to increase knowledge around birth registration increasing community capacity to advocate for services whilst challenging culture on the issue.
- l Ran clubs for boys and girls covering issues such as early child marriage, teenage pregnancy, sexual and reproductive health (including HIV/AIDS) & rights.
- l Reached hundreds of families through community outreach, awareness raising sessions, and mobile support services like drop-ins and advice clinics. In doing so helped with advice and case support, touching on a range of birth registration and socioeconomic rights issues
- l Continued diverse portfolio of work supporting vulnerable children in the community.
## Rafiki Girls Centre:
- l Trained 120 girls in life skills, personal development and a vocational course with work experience. The clear majority of which went on to access further education or employment within six months.
- l Ran a number of events including HIV workshop, careers day, counselling and graduation.
- l For 2019-22 cohorts, students were asked to score themselves from 1-10 at the start and finish of the programme, they stated an average growth of 164% for Self-Confidence, 176% for Life Skills, and 201% Financial Management.
- l Finished FCDO (formerly DFID)/Jo Cox Memorial Strengthening Grant for the same purpose.
- l Grant awarded an ‘A’ grade.

## **Achievements and performance continued**
Foundations for Farming:
- l Completed work with a school to teach methods of conservation farming.
- l Developed demonstrations plots and installed irrigation drip-kit.
- l Yielded harvest and replanted for following season.
- l Increased maize production by 1,067% (from 150kg to 1,750kg), sugar bean by 600%, tomatoes by 333% and onions by 217%.
- l Increased outputs provided 15,920 school meals, increasing health, attendance and concentration.
- l Surplus sales of £522 bought the school English and Maths books, more farming materials, a printer and a contribution towards a laptop.
## **Financial review**
The net receipts for the year was £25,990, including net payments of £651 on unrestricted funds and net receipts of £26,641 on restricted funds after transfers.
## **Reserves policy**
It is the policy of Zimbabwe Educational Trust to maintain free reserves at a level which enable the charity to meet our objectives and support our beneficiaries.
A minimum level of reserves equating to at least three months of unrestricted expenditure and a maximum level of reserves equating to twelve months is considered sufficient to cover our overheads, including management, administration and support costs, as well as enabling us to respond to emergency needs which may arise in this period.
The charity's free reserves, at the year end were £12,329.

## Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Zimbabwe Educational Trust
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2022, which are set out on pages 6 to 10.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I report in respect of my examination of the charity's accounts as carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1 accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Charities Act; 2 the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1 Accounting policies**
## **Basis of accounting**
The trustees have taken advantage of section 133 of the Charities Act 2011 and have prepared the accounts on a receipts and payments basis.
There has been no change to the accounting policies since last year.
No changes have been made to the accounts for previous years.
## **Taxation**
As a charity the organisation benefits from rates relief and is generally exempt from income tax and capital gains tax but not from VAT. Irrecoverable VAT is included in the cost of those items to which it relates.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity.
Designated funds are unrestricted funds earmarked by the trustees for particular purposes.
Restricted funds are subjected to restrictions on their expenditure imposed by the donor or through the terms of an appeal.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the accounts.

Increasing access, enrolment and retention in primary education for children in Zimbabwe through improving awareness of birth and death registration and provision of legal advice and services. The transfer relates to a contribution to the Operations Manager's salary and general overheads.
Rafikhi Girls' Centre
Foundations for Farming
For empowering women in Zimbabwe through education, vocational training and holistic support at the Rafikhi Girls' Centre in Harare. The transfer relates to a contribution to the Operations Manager's salary and general overheads.
For work on training primary schools in conservation agriculture. The transfer relates to a contribution to the Operations Manager's salary and general overheads.
