Talawa Theatre Cornpany (Tfci mnunues to be a leading Black theatre cornpany in the UK. The tompanv
exists to creaie. produce and tour qualitywork which Shines a spotlight on Black t3lEnt. presenting theatre
for a diverse ran8e of audiences acrossthe country. lfi addition. we spend a considera￿e amount of time
and resourtes on ouryear round national talent developmeni programme. MAKE. MAKE offers trainingand
development opportunilies to Black artists at all stages of their careers. We launched the online
ornpoTrent tg the programme. MAKE Online. a virtual hub that Bives Black artists the opportunity to
connect and collabjrate. and gives industry shapers the chance io t)ffer paid opportunities.
Following confirmation of funding for the period 2018-2022. Thc continue5 to be an Arts Council Natitsnal
Portfolio Organisation INPOI and ￿c was 5ucce551ul in aFvlyin8 for an extension year on its funding which
jw runs to 31 March 2023.
Talawa has successfully applied to Nrts Council Naiional to be part of its pNrfolio from Aw"12023 until
March 2026. This year has been incredi￿ successful and we plan to increase our output by applying lor
addifional investmenr from ACE.
May 2021 saw ihe advent of Talawa Stories BBC Radio 4 Series l. sumrner prograrnme indudEd Talawa
Firsts 2021 for the first time in Talawa Studio at Fairfield Ha115. free performances of The Tide in Croydon at
Park Hill Park with onsite engagement artivitie5 for our audiences. This produttion was ho￿ed èt the
Greenwich + Docklands International FestNal and The Bi8 Feast festival in stoke￿￿-T￿nt.
Wintev wè5 packed with prodLKtions. from Run118èck at The Rec in Fairfield Halls io A Place For We at The
Park. These award winnin8 produttions were seen by audiences across London. They were recorded to
allow for national an¢J intemat1￿al releases in 2022.

started the Croydon Introduttionary wriiersgroup wilh 10 I￿1 people working with a literaryfacilitator.
Talawa Theat￿ Company (rrci has offices and Siudio space in Fairfiehl Halls. After many months working remotelv
only. Talawa team came back inro the gffice from May 2021 and began our face to face proeramme once more. We
intioduced new ways of workin& tsol1tst1￿ olfKe and remote working 5ceneri0s. which is due to be rewewed in
Seotember 2022.

This produttion was critical success and was nominated for a 81ack 8ritish Theatre Award.

Our annual Festival ol new work was due to be presented at Talwa stud￿ in Fairfield Halls. It continves io present the best of
upcorning and diverse talent to PfO(lucers and OPElls UP opwrtunities and attivities in theatre, ielevision and film, driving
diversity in the arts and the arts ¥yo￿orCe. Talliwa's aim is w kick start careers and create community of artists who

our support- WAI become rhe next generation to influence the future of 8ritt5h theatre.
Due to COVID, 1020 festwal was cancelled. Oui lestival happened in July 2021. We work wth four writer5 and four directors on
brand newwork, C￿￿mInatIng in two double bills perforrTrances. For the first time we live 5trearned Talawa Firsts. as there were
capacity restrictions. it allowed for additional industry producer5 ond audience5 to See the festival.
A Place For We

A co-production between The Park Theatre and Thc. Thiswas Ca￿dIed due to Covid-19. Discussion5 Started in 2021 to look at
rescheduling A Place for We io a￿umn 2021 which was achie¥ed.
There were 36 performances of A Place For We and two ￿$t show discussions with the cast. director and writer. We invited
community ambassadors to rehearsals. the purpose being io engage and e￿oUrage local communities to attend the
performances.

The pandemic has had a Starkly divergent impact on cornrnvnitie5.' Black people are four times more likely to die from Covid-
19, according to OffKe of National Statistics fi8ures in May 2020 for En8land arbd Wales. INhile in November 2020. the Joinr
Committee ofi Human Ri8hts report "Black People. Racism and Human Rights- corKluded thar rhe Government must urgently
take action to protert the hurnan rights of Black people acros5 rnany areas. including healthcare. The Tales Irorn the Front
Line interviews were a space for the Black worke15 to Share their experience5. their concerns and their hopes for the
future_ Wack art15tS 3nd ueatives have Ihen used the iestimonies io create sixdram*ised pieces ofwork using music,
movernent. photography and soundscapes to convey the story. These were released episodically. with the f*rst two films Ipart i
& 21 being made available on 30 November 2020 and parts 3 & 4 feleased 11 February 2021.
The final series of filrns part S.. Primary School teacher and part 6 Breather were released in 27 April 2021. These films Continue
to be watthed by national and international bryewers on youlube.

Throughout the year we ran the various strands of the MAKE prograrnme, targeting glack artists across ihe UK. In all we
engaged with 330 artiMS across Ehe year.

Script Reoding Service
The Service aims to read scripts from emerging Black writers and give them critical feedback and developrnent 5UPPOrt on their
work. This Iree-to- use service artracted 220 writer5 through the year.

MAKE Onlsne
We launched MAKE online, a resource for 8lack artists across ihe VK during the year. As at 31 March 2022, there were 1.115
fegisirants. of which 215 identified themselve5 as organisations gr individuals from the wider industry and the ￿maindIng 900
identified as art15ts. We believe that MAKE Online is a unique space for Black artists in the UK. and that il s beginning to change
the industry.
IYPT (returned September 2021- April 20221
TYPT 15 Talawa'5 flagship programme for ernerging Black theatre makers. A team of emerÈing artists aged 18-25 will work with
established art15ts to create a brand new Show. in Talawa Sludio. This 15 bein8 fElavnched in April 20211il is 3 9 month
programmel, as the 2020 programme was (ancelled due to COVID. Partiopants recruiied for the 2020 cohort, will be offered
the opporrunity to come back ont*)ard. Recruitment for any remaining places happened in September 2021 and the
pro8ramme is now running from September 2021 to April 2022.

resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable flrture. For this ￿350n, they continue to adopt

The Tfustees have assessed the major ris*s to wh¢ch the company 15 exposed. in particular those reL4ted to the operations and
finances of the cornpany. and are satisfied that systerns and procedures are in place to mitigate all exposure to the major risks.
Due to COVID, we had to cèncel or wstpone our produttions programmed from March 2020-December 2020. However Ouf
rinancial p)sition was stable and consequelltly we did not need io app￿1 for Culture Relief Fund. Our business w35 brisk and we
also did not need to fvrtol￿ any of our staff. We cwtinued io provide digital work and online engagement with art15ts and
audiences.

and Republic ol Ireland IFRS 1021. published in Jantsary 2019. The Charitable Cornpany is a public benefit entity for the
purposes of FRS 102 and theiefore rhe tharity also prepared its financial statements in accordance with ihe Statement
of Recornmended Practice applKable to charitie5 preparin8 their accounts in accordance with ihe Financial Reportin8
Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of I￿land (The FR$ 102 Charities SORP published in January 20191. the
Companies Act 2(*J6 and the CharitiesAtt 2011.
The financial statements are prepared in sterlin& which is the functional cwrency of the compary. Monetary amounts
in these financial staternents are rovnded to the nearest wund.
1.2 GOI￿ Concem Basis
The financial statements have been prepared on a 8oin8 concern basis. The compary's ab*lity to continue to trade in
the long term is currently dependent on Arts Council Fundin8. Talawa is an Arts Council National Portfolio Or6ani5ation
and had funding confirmed for ihe period l April 2022 10 31 March 2026. As a ￿$VIt of the (ovid pandemic the Arts
Council granted portfolio organisation5 the oppjrtunity to appty for a I year extension to this funding period. Talawa
ha5 successfully applied for such an extension and has been awarded funding rjf £448.407 for the year ended 31 Marth
2023
The company has unrestricted net assets of E408.407. of which £159,000 has been dest%nated. The directors consider
that the cornpany's reserves will be sufficient to cover deficits that may result from unanticipated costs ol projert5.
On this basi5. the dirertors tonsider it appropriateto prepa￿the finarKial statements on a goingcimcern basis.
