About AMURT UK
Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT) UK is a grassroots disaster relief and community development organisation working with local communities to relieve the immediate suffering of those affected by disaster and crises and helping them move on with their lives. Current projects in the UK serve vulnerable communities to:
•Relieve food poverty, involving food upcycling where food would otherwise go to waste
•Promote healthy food and lifestyle choices
- •Find other services that they might need to support them
•Engage, train, upskill and coordinate volunteers to promote mental health & wellbeing
We believe every individual has the right to have their basic needs fulfilled such as nourishment and being treated with respect regardless of race, gender or social status.
In the UK we currently work with local volunteers in London and Birmingham to relieve immediate suffering by delivering projects focused on food and feeding the homeless and food poverty affected beneficiaries including vulnerable children, families and households.
We also run a health-food store, Food for All, in Stoke Newington; its profits are used to support our help for vulnerable and homeless beneficiaries.
Internationally we partner with other AMURT chapters, to respond to the specific needs and challenges of their local areas. To do this, we work closely with AMURT Global and with AMURTEL, a separate sister organisation managed by women for women.
BACKGROUND
AMURT is one of the few private voluntary organisations of Global South origin, having been founded in India in 1965. Its original objective was to help meet the needs of those affected by disasters that regularly hit the Indian sub-continent. Over the years AMURT has established teams in thirty-four countries, creating a network that can meet development and disaster needs in many parts of the world.
In 1985 the global AMURT organisation broadened its goals to include long-term development and in 1986 AMURT was established in the UK.
AMURTEL was formed in 1975 as a sister organisation to respond specifically to the problems faced by women and children. AMURTEL is managed by women and initiates programmes that raise the standard of health and education of women and their children. The programmes also encourage women to gain greater self-determination and economic independence.
Welcome from our Chair
2025 has been a year of both achievement and resolve for AMURT UK. In London, our feeding programme reached 15,339 beneficiaries over the course of the year which is an 18% increase on 2024, with an average of 610 meals distributed each week. These numbers reflect not only our expanding capacity, but the harsh reality that more people than ever are struggling to meet their most basic needs. With 7.3 million adults affected by food insecurity nationally as of early 2025, and food prices still over 27% higher than three years ago, the demand for dignified, nutritious support shows no sign of abating.
In Birmingham, our monthly feeding programme continues to serve around 120 people each month, entirely through the dedication of volunteers, a quiet but vital lifeline, and a model that demonstrates what community-led action can achieve.
This year, we also reflected on an important milestone: Food for All, our not-for-profit health food shop on Cazenove Road, has been serving the Stoke Newington community since 1976. As we approach its 50th anniversary in November 2026, we celebrate five decades of ethical, community-centred trading whose profits continue to support AMURT UK's wider humanitarian work.
Internationally, 2025 brought both progress and pressure. In Nigeria, the Ebonyi State Government assimilated 87 AMURT health workers into the civil service which is a powerful recognition of our community-led model's sustainability after 15 years. In Greece, AMURTEL's maternal health centre celebrated its first Peer-to-Peer graduate stepping into a leadership role. In Kenya, the Spirulina Nutrition Project supported over 1,800 children with results that continue to move us including children gaining weight, regaining energy, and returning to life. In Egypt, Romania, and Thailand, our partners continued their vital work under conditions of significant difficulty, and we remain committed to standing alongside them.
What gives me the greatest confidence as I look to 2026 is not any single grant or partnership but the community we have built. The London Feeding Programme demonstrates this beautifully — with 25% of our volunteers being current or former service users, the people we serve are not just recipients of support but active shapers of it. This principle sits at the heart of everything we do. On behalf of the trustees, my deepest gratitude to everyone who made 2025 possible.

What we do in the UK: London Feeding Pro gramme
2025 remained a challenging year for our service users, with food insecurity continuing to affect vulnerable communities across the UK at stubbornly high levels. An estimated 7.3 million adults were affected by food insecurity in January 2025, with 5% of households reporting not eating for a whole day because they could not afford or get access to food. Nearly one in five households with children, 17.9%, were experiencing food insecurity. Food prices remain significantly higher than before the cost-ofliving crisis began, with the typical weekly food basket costing over 27% more than in April 2022. Families continue to face impossible choices, with the most deprived households hardest hit and nutritious food including fruit, vegetables, and healthy staples, the first to be cut.
In 2025 AMURT UK prepared and distributed 31,692 wa ~~rm, nutritious, plant-based meals, serving over~~ 15,339 homeless and vulnerable people affected by the poverty crisis in London. This represents an inc ~~rease of 19% in meals and 18% in beneficiaries~~
compared to 2024, continuing the upward trend we have seen year on year as demand for our services gro ~~ws.~~
We also distributed warm clothes and bedding and 5000 offered a targeted signposting service to those struggling. In 2025 we refined our signposting model, concentrating sessions at our Salvation Army Warm Space Hub in Lower Clapton where demand 0 was strongest and most consistent. 56 focused sessions supporting 183 service users which is more than in 2024, despite fewer sessions, demonstrating the value of a more targeted approach.
Our Lower Clapton hub, established through our partnership with The Salvation Army, has continued to grow as a trusted space where vulnerable people can find a warm meal, nutritious food and snacks, a welcoming community, and guidance to essential services. Many of our beneficiaries are repeat service users whose challenges are not solved in a single visit. Needs are becoming increasingly complex, and we often walk alongside people over time, helping them to address multiple issues as they arise. Our approach is always person-centred and trauma-informed, recognising that nourishment is not just about food, but about dignity, safety, and being truly seen. Volunteers are available to sit with service users over a cup of tea, listening with empathy and providing guidance where needed.
We have continued our food distributions at Cazenove Road and through community partners in Hackney, including Greenhouse GP Surgery, Streets Kitchen and Athena Medical Centre, ensuring our reach extends to those who may never come into a formal space.
Over the past year, we have seen continued growth in people relying on our meal service. In 2024, we supported an average of 260 individuals per week; in 2025 this rose to approximately 295 per week. The volume of meals distributed also increased, from an average of 523 per week in 2024 to approximately 610 in 2025. These figures reflect the deepening pressures faced by vulnerable people in London, and the growing trust placed in AMURT as a consistent, compassionate presence in the community.

Each session concluded with a communal meal, fostering social connection and addressing isolation, particularly among older residents. The initiative continued to strengthen community bonds as well as dietary habits, and we are committed to expanding it further in the year ahead.
Volunteering and Inclusion
AMURT UK’s activities are almost exclusively run by dedicated volunteers. In 2025, 314 volunteer shifts by over 208 volunteers were filled, making up over 4725 hours of volunteer time.
We believe that everybody should be able to make a difference through volunteering. That is why inclusion is a guiding principle when it comes to recruiting volunteers. We collaborate with NHS occupational therapists, probation officers, and Step Up coaches from Volunteer Centre Hackney to ensure that barriers to accessing volunteering are removed. To accommodate volunteers with SEND and mental health challenges, we design flexible, bespoke sessions followed by feedback discussions.
Having such a diverse range of volunteers continues to elevate our organisation. It is wonderful to observe volunteers from different backgrounds working together and learning from each other. Our inclusive volunteering programme not only opens up benefits like skill development and social connection, but also ensures our organisation is genuinely representative of the community we so lovingly serve.

What we do in the UK: Birmingham Feeding Pro gramme
Our AMURT UK team in Birmingham prepares and distributes hot, healthy food for people experiencing homelessness, insecure accommodation, or vulnerability on the first Saturday of every month in Birmingham city centre. Since launching in March 2022 with around 50 beneficiaries, the programme has grown steadily and now feeds an average of 120 people each month.
The programme relies entirely on volunteers, with food collected from two food banks. To ensure continuity of supply, we are also exploring joining Fairshare, which accesses surplus food from supermarkets, providing a reliable backup should food bank supplies fall short.
Supported by a local women's charity whose fundraising covers essential equipment and kitchen hir ~~e, and with a food bank lending us their van, the~~ programme runs efficiently and at low cost. What we do in the UK: Food for All, London
‑ ‑ Not for profit vegetarian/vegan health food shop Food for All, on Cazenove Road, has been serving the people of Stoke Newington since 1975. As the shop approaches its 50th anniversary in November 2026, it stands as one of only a handful of independent health food shops in London still operating from the early days of the movement, a quiet but remarkable achievement in a city where so many small independents have come and gone.
Over five decades, Food for All has become a genuine community anchor, with a customer base that reflects the full diversity of Hackney, including long-standing Afro-Caribbean, Hasidic Jewish, East European, Arab and other communities. The shop is home to one of the largest arrays of fresh loose herbs in London, particularly valued by Afro-Caribbean customers for whom these herbs are integral to their culture and cooking traditions. A multilingual, multicultural team serves the neighbourhood with expertise and warmth, and the shop's loyal, multigenerational following speaks to the deep trust it has built over generations.
Food for All stocks over 300 therapeutic and culinary herbs, tinctures, superfoods and supplements, alongside body-care and household refills and products from ethical, artisanal local producers. All profits support AMURT UK's community and humanitarian work, both l ~~ocally and internationally, including the London Feeding Program~~ me. After 50 years, the shop remains exactly what it has always been: an affordable, ethical, knowledgeable space where everyone is welcome.

At AMURTEL Greece, they continue to uphold the belief that every mother has the right and the capacity to reclaim her well-being, health, and sense of self-determination, and that every infant deserves attentive care to foster healthy development. In 2025, with many migrant and refugee women continuing to put down roots in Athens, their work remained focused on empowerment, education, and healing, while reaching an important milestone in their longheld vision of becoming a truly mother-led organisation.
The Highlight of 2025: A Peer-to-Peer Graduate Takes the Lead
The most significant moment of 2025 came when a young, dynamic Egyptian mother of two and graduate of AMURTEL's Peer-to-Peer training programme, began enthusiastically leading both mother yoga and mother-baby yoga sessions at the centre. Having previously attended the full cycle of infant care and mothering groups before completing her training, she brings far more than yoga to the sessions, supporting mothers across a wide range of needs with warmth and lived e ~~xperience.~~
It has always been AMURTEL's goal to incorporate 15000 t ~~he mothers themselves into the work, allowing it~~ to evolve into something genuinely mother-led. While a number of refugee and migrant mothers 10000 h ~~ave been part of the team over the years, many~~ have eventually moved on, often leaving Greece, and some have not yet seen themselves in 5000 leadership roles given their cultural backgrounds. Maternal Mental Health
In 2025, AMURTEL placed a major emphasis on maternal mental health, deepening its collaboration with two established NGOs, Medical Volunteers International and ASAM (the Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilisation). Together they created safe, culturally sensitive spaces where mothers can share experiences, process challenges, and build peer support networks. Sessions are facilitated by trained mental health professionals and psychosocial support staff, with interpretation ensuring accessibility for women from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
The programme addresses emotional wellbeing during pregnancy and postpartum, coping with stress, trauma, and displacement-related anxiety, strengthening mother-infant bonding, recognising signs of postnatal depression and other perinatal mood disorders, and reducing isolation through peer connection. Where needed, participants are referred to specialised mental health services through the partner network to ensure continuity of care.
Core Services
AMURTEL's midwives continued to offer holistic, culturally sensitive antenatal and postnatal care throughout 2025, supporting mothers with - pregnancy follow up, preparation for birth groups, and individualised feeding plans, whether breastfeeding, formula, or a combination. Infant care and nutrition groups, baby and mother yoga, and the maternal mental health support group formed the backbone of a rich weekly programme. Casework support, including booking appointments and referrals to partner NGOs, ensured that no mother had to navigate complex systems alone. Story of an AMURTEL Greece Service user
Last week, a mother we’ve known for years came by with her three-week-old baby. She ~~didn’t need anything in particular—she just wanted to visit. As~~ she walked in, she looked at her baby and said quietly, “This is your second home.”
~~We first met L. during a previous pregnancy. Now she has five~~ children and plenty of experience, but she still chose to come back during this one. Not because she had to, but because she wanted support, conversation, and a place where she felt understood.

AMURT Nigeria
AMURT Nigeria began working in southeast Nigeria in 2010, where maternal mortality rates were among the highest in the world. Many Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in rural areas were failing under a centralised system, with chronic understaffing, limited hours, deteriorating infrastructure, and little trust from the communities they were meant to serve. Women often opted to give birth at home or rely on local chemists and herbalists, many of whom misuse artificial oxytocin to induce labour, risking uterine rupture and fetal death.
AMURT Nigeria responded by developing a decentralised, community-led model for primary and maternal healthcare in neglected rural areas. Community members are involved from the outset, helping initiate, manage, and sustain each project in active partnership with government. This model, refined through 15 years of continuous presence, places local ownership, cultural relevance, and su ~~stainability at its core. Over that time, AMURT~~ has facilitated the birth of 34,000 babies, performed over 2,000 caesarean sections and 800 pa ~~ediatric surgeries, constructed 25 health centre~~ buildings, drilled and installed over 290 village boreholes, and supported more than 50 sc ~~holarship graduates.~~

the full renovation of Odeligbo Health Centre’s building and staff quarters, and the construction of a mini-incinerator and solar power extension at Mgbalukwu Health Centre, guaranteeing 24-hour electricity for both clinical and residential areas.
By managing internal funds effectively, centres have built a resilient system capable of independent maintenance without waiting for government or donor cycles, timely payment of local staff, and forward planning through emergency reserve funds for future expansions. In a landmark development, the Ebonyi State Government, having adopted health as a top priority, assimilated 87 AMURT health workers into the civil service as part of a Memorandum of Understanding between AMURT and the state government. This milestone reflects the success of the partnership model and signals a path toward a fully sustainable, locally-governed healthcare system.
Emergency Obstetric Care
Since 2017, AMURT has been making emergency obstetric services accessible in rural communities, where minimising delays is key to reducing maternal deaths. Four health centres spanning Ikwo, Abakaliki, Onitsha, and Ebonyi Local Government Areas remain vital lifelines for rural women, each equipped with operating theatres, blood transfusion facilities, stand-by ambulances, and resident do ~~ctors, laboratory scientists, midwives, and health~~ workers on shift around the clock.
In 2025, these centres carried out 265 caesarean sections, representing 12% of total births at AMURT assisted health centres. Notably, 81% of caesarean patients came from outside the immediate project 15000 areas, and only 5% of procedures were elective, reflecting the centres’ role as genuine emergency providers for the wider region. A further 45 births 10000 were supported via emergency ambulance referrals to the tertiary hospital in Abakaliki. Safe Motherhood
AMURT Nigeria delivers 24-hour, year-round primary health services across its assisted health centres. In 2025, 4,221 women attended ANC days, with skilled maternal health promoters tracking every pregnancy in every village, holding monthly support group meetings, and facilitating home visits for highrisk cases. Health workers equipped with ultrasound machines and laboratory services provide comprehensive preventive care including family planning, malaria prophylaxis, and tetanus vaccines. In 2025, 2,206 births took place at AMURT-assisted centres, with 41% of mothers travelling from outside the project areas — a testament to the trust AMURT has built in rural Ebonyi
State.
Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health
AMURT's ASRH Unit reached 3,598 adolescents across six project areas in 2025, delivering education on reproductive health, harmful traditional practices, and genderbased violence through peer educators in secondary schools and Youth Champions at village level. Teenage mothers received counselling, skill-building, and support to return to school. Menstrual hygiene sessions reached 1,804 girls with free sanitary pads and destigmatising information.
Paediatric Surgeries
In 2025, AMURT sponsored 78 paediatric surgeries at its 10 assisted health centres, with a further 14 major surgeries referred to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, giving rural children access to critical interventions for conditions including hydrocephalus, intestinal obstructions, and typhoid perforation.
Women's Economic Empowerment AMURT's cooperative programme, running since 2016, supports widows and solebreadwinning women to start their own businesses. In 2025, 141 women joined the programme's ten revolving credit schemes, bringing total membership to over 1,000.
Protecting the Girl Child
In 2025, 99 female volunteers were trained across three communities as champions against FGM and gender-based violence, conducting outreach through markets, faith communities, and local leadership. Fourteen FGM cases were reported, with all confirmed cases receiving medical attention, psychosocial support, and counselling.
Water is Life
In 2025, AMURT installed 19 new boreholes and repaired 32, bringing the total to 291 since 2011. Kenya Spirulina Nutrition Project
The Spirulina Nutrition Project (SNP) is focused on ending malnutrition and supporting the health of vulnerable children and mothers through the powerful benefits of spirulina, a natural, nutrientrich superfood.
In 2025, spirulina continues to show remarkable results. Even a small daily dose can help children gain weight, grow stronger, and improve their energy and mood, with children becoming more active, alert, and emotionally responsive within just a few weeks.
Studies continue to highlight spirulina's ability to strengthen the immune system, making it especially valuable in communities where access to balanced diets is limited.
The SNP grows its own spirulina at its farm in Kambimawe village, producing 12–14 kg per month, ensuring it remains fresh, accessible, and affordable. Local women are actively involved in growing and distributing spirulina, building skills and creating jobs in their communities.
In 2025, between 140 and 170 children aged 1–14 years benefited each month, with over 1,800 15000 ch ~~ildren supported across the year, each receiving~~ 100g of spirulina. The most common presenting conditions were underweight, malnutrition, and 10000 ge ~~neral childhood health challenges. Malnutrition
Malnutrition remains a serious health challenge for children, affecting physical growth, immune function, mental focus, and emotional wellbeing. It is one of the clearest signs of poverty. According to the FAO, hunger is not just about insufficient food — it is also about lack of access to nutritious food. In many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, most families cannot afford a balanced meal more than a few times a week, which is why chronic malnutrition remains so widespread. Spirulina offers a simple, local, and powerful response: easy to grow and packed with nutrients, it supports communities in building healthier futures.

Case Study: Amara, aged 2
~~When Amara~~ ' ~~s mother first brought her to the SN~~ P, the little girl was severely underweight and visibly emaciated, having been diagnosed with marasmus — a serious form of acute ~~malnutrition. Despite trying multiple vitamin sup~~ plements over the preceding months, her weight had been stagnant or declining for over a year.
~~The SNP team began Amara on a course of spiru~~ lina alongside homeopathic remedies. At her four-week followup, her mother reported a noticeable change: Amara looked ~~stronger and more lively, and had gained 300g —~~ her first recorded weight gain in over a year. She was continued on the programme and returned a month later having gained a ~~further 500g. The paleness had gone, her appetit~~ e had returned, and she was falling ill less frequently. International Disaster relief
AMURT UK has supported a number of international disaster relief efforts in 2024-2025. For example we supported flood relief operations in Spain and relief in Philippines after a typhoon and a volcanic eruption.

AMURT UK works closely with AMURT Global.
AMURT’s global coordinating office is based in the US. At times of humanitarian disaster international AMURT chapters liaise with this office to find out how to best support the AMURT chapter closest to where the disaster has occurred. This support may come in the form of fundraising, sending experts or additional volunteers.
INVESTMENT IN SUBSIDARY
AMURT owns ninety-nine £1 ordinary shares in Food For All (London) Ltd, constituting a 99% shareholding. All shares in Food For All Ltd. are fully paid up and allotted. No dividend was paid. There was no change in the value of the shares in the year.
The activities of Food For All Ltd., which trades as a whole-food retailer, are entirely separate from those of AMURT. Its accounts have not been consolidated into the accounts of AMURT as its activities are unrelated to those of the Trust. Profits from Food For All Ltd. are covenanted to the Trust. This amounted to £45,980 in this financial year.
The accounts of Food For All Ltd. are audited as per the requirements of the Companies Act 1985/2006.
Financial Review
Brief Statement on the Charity’s Policy on Reserves:
AMURT UK's reserves policy is to maintain a minimum of £30,000 in unrestricted funds. This level of reserve is sufficient to cover approximately four months of UK operational costs, providing time to pursue alternative funding or, if necessary, to wind down services responsibly. It also ensures the organisation can respond promptly to international emergency appeals ahead of a dedicated fundraising campaign.
