THE HARVEST CHARITABLE TRUST ANNUAL REPORT 2024/25
The Trustees have made both regular and one-off payments to a variety of organisations within the Main Objects of the Charity. The Trustees confirm that they have paid due regard to the Guidance issued by the Charity Commission on Public Benefit. The Trustees also confirm that they have reviewed their internal financial controls.
The income of the Charity of £78,472.00 represented a very significant decrease increase on the previous year’s exceptional income (£237,832.76) and was largely constituted by Gift Aid reclaims from HMRC. Grants made over the year, of £76,505.00, were some £10,000 more than the previous year’s total of £66,336.27. on top of the market value of £154,329.33 in the Ruffer charitable fund, the Charity ended the year with cash at bank of £23,774.53 (as against £21,931.53 at 31 March 2024).
There was an approximate 40/60 split between grants within the UK and grants overseas, as against 19/81 in 2023/24. The split between the two Main Objects of the Advancement of Christian Faith and the Relief of Poverty and Other Need was 28/72 (2023/24: 14/86).
The range of recipients for grants reflects the personal interests and experience of the Charity’s founder MCA Hutton and his wife Mrs AEC Hutton.
Historically, the Trustees have aimed to hold income reserves of at least £3,000, as more or less sufficient to meet commitments for at least the following three months. To this they are likely to return in 2028/29, following exceptional levels of both income/reserves and donations over the five years 2023/24 to 2027/28.
The major source of funds was MCA Hutton.
Being a (hitherto) small family Charity with no permanent endowment, the assets of the Charity have since its formation in 1982 been represented by cash at Barclays Bank Plc in Norwich. That said, the Charity received three exceptional donations during 2023/24, as noted in the Minutes of the Trustees’ Meeting on 30 August 2023. And, accordingly, the Trustees have invested £150,000 in units in the Ruffer LLP Charitable Fund, for drawdown over (as envisaged) 2025/26, 2026/27 and 2027/28 — apart from balances to be retained beyond those dates for Hope for Tomorrow (Burundi) and We Are East Church, Norwich.
