BUDIRIRO TRUST REGISTERED CHARITY NO. 313921

GENERAL APPEAL

AND

ANNUAL REPORT FIFTY-SEVENTH YEAR

2024

## **THE BUDIRIRO TRUST**

Since 1967, Budiriro has given grants to many hundreds of young people in Zimbabwe, equipping them to play their part in the professional, administrative and technical life of the country. The Trust is committed to go on supporting the vital work of education in Zimbabwe at higher secondary levels and in technical and vocational training.

We offer bursaries to young Zimbabweans to enable them to undertake A-Level courses. Grants are made on the specific recommendation of head teachers. Close contact is maintained with the schools and, wherever possible, with the pupils, by our two Regional Co-ordinators.

Each bursary represents a commitment of two years, so that courses embarked upon do not have to be abandoned for lack of funds. Our aim is for each two-year grant to cover the actual cost to parents of fees and related expenses. Bursaries are awarded according to need but also with regard to a pupil’s character and ability. We are currently supporting four schools (two in the south and two in the north) and hope to extend that support in due course, funds permitting.

## CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

It is a great honour to report to you that Budiriro Trust is still going strong, despite the challenges that we have faced since the first day that the Trust was formed in 1957! Each year that I have been part of this wonderful organisation has shown me the grace and potential that society has, and in particular, the potential of young Zimbabwean students who will go on to change their lives and that of their families, as well as of Zimbabwe itself.

None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of our donors, many of whom have been with us for many years. These are the silent heroes who continuously avail their money for a cause that means so much to us all. With virtually no overheads, bar those of our regional co-ordinators and very small costs of printing, stationery etc, we are able to ensure that their contribution is efficiently used to provide the education that the students need. Sadly, economic conditions have meant that our donation pool has been reduced though we are still in a position to meet our commitments to the young people who demonstrate an ability and keenness to succeed that is unmatched in most contexts.

I visit Zimbabwe each year and use this time to see the schools and students in action myself. This year, I drove out to St Paul’s Musami, which is approximately 60 kms north of Harare. I met Mr Takawira who is the Deputy Headteacher and conducted a learning walk as well as meeting our Budiriro Scholars. I can report that the Budiriro culture is strongly embedded in our schools; the students are well-supported by the schools and are doing well in difficult conditions in Zimbabwe. These boarding schools give them the opportunity to focus on education as it is recognised as a key way to develop oneself in Zimbabwe. I also met Ron Lumbiwa, our active Southern Co-ordinator in Gweru. He gives a lot of time to supporting the schools and students, past and present, from his plot on the outskirts of Gweru. He drives to Thekwane and Nyathi to ensure that he monitors the activities of our students and

3

has a vibrant community on WhatsApp that has grown to 70 members of past and present students who are keen to update us and explore opportunities through information exchange. It is pleasing to see this evolve as it is a long-term plan to keep the Budiriro name alive in the community and we plan to explore the opportunity for the members to be future donors if they would like to. Most importantly, an analysis of the results shown by Budiriro students are first class - many students score AAA for their A-levels, meaning they are well-placed to pursue tertiary studies. We do not fund university education so the students have to seek funding from other well-wishers.

Zimbabwe itself is a country facing challenges. However, the stoicism of its people is evident; as well their resourcefulness in surviving the harsh economic environment. The introduction of the Zig as a currency was made with fanfare earlier this year as being a solution to the failure of the Zimbabwe Dollar. It is important to point out that all school fees are payable in United States Dollars as Zimbabwe is at least 85% dollarized as a country. The Zig has fallen somewhat in recent months, which is having the effect of rapidly increasing prices and is leading to profiteering where prices are rising in US Dollar terms, in some cases making the prices as high as UK prices! Unfortunately, income in US Dollar terms is low so it means that affordability of education is a big issue in most families.

As a small organisation, we cannot change the entire country’s fortunes. We seek partnership with donors who share our values of seeking to transform the lives of young Zimbabweans who represent the future of the country. Your support as a stakeholder means that the legacy of Grace Benton continues as the need today is as great as it has ever been.

## **THE BUDIRIRO TRUST – AGM**

_The Trust’s AGM received a report on its work with Zimbabwean students – and also heard from two UK students who had visited Zimbabwe to see that work for themselves_

## **The Budiriro Trust has been working in Zimbabwe since 1967.**

The Trust gives scholarships to assist in the advanced secondary and higher education of young Zimbabweans of promising ability.

The Trust held its 56th AGM on 28 October, at Westminster Quaker Meeting House, 8 Hop Gardens, off St Martins Lane, London WC2N 4EH – coinciding with a demonstration in Trafalgar Square, which led to the meeting being occasionally overwhelmed by the sound of a police helicopter circling overhead.

## **Budiriro Expedition Scholars**

_The Chairman’s report mentioned the Budiriro Expedition Scholars Programme, which was set up this year ‘for young people in the UK to see how education in Zimbabwe is structured._ ’

The two students were Thabani Ngwenya and Lucia Chadburn.

Both travelled to Zimbabwe at their own expense in the UK summer of 2023, and visited the following schools: Inyathi High School, Thekwane High School, St Pauls’ Musami High School and, finally Girls’ College.

All of the schools attended by Budiriro students were attending are are boarding co-ed high schools.

## **Chairman’s report 2023 – a summary**

Chairman Sikumbuzo Ngwenya welcomed the return to classrooms after the pandemic: ‘… it is good to see the children back in the routine and chores of boarding schools in rural Zimbabwe. The focused environment is an amazing opportunity to transform the lives of young people.’

He reflected sadly on the fact that while once young people sought education in order to become skilled in professions in Zimbabwe, many now leave to go abroad where they hope to find greater opportunities.

‘I am proud of the achievements of our students,’ he said, and went on to describe some of the difficulties faced by the schools where Budiriro-sponsored students are studying.

‘The students are recommended by the selection committee in each school and are specially selected by the Trustees,’ he told the meeting. ‘Most of the funds donated by our committed donors … are spent on our core purpose – the granting of bursaries to bright but needy pupils – means the opportunity is given to these able but disadvantaged students which they would not be able to have without this gift … We are truly grateful for this support and, on behalf of the Budiriro Trust family, I thank you.’

For the full report, see: _http://www.radisol-client.co.uk/education-charity-zimbabwe/downloads/annual-reportmin.pdf_

_The following account of the Programme is based on a joint report by Lucia and Thabani:_

‘At each of the schools, we lived with the teachers on-site, by the students' dorms. Lucia did some teaching for A-Level Mathematics and Economics at each of the Budiriro schools.

‘We attended many lessons to add on to our insight of the holistic school experience and to be able to write our reports. We spent a lot of time getting to know students - particularly the Budiriro students.

‘At each school, we filmed some interviews and videos for Budiriro. We conducted a survey at St Pauls’, Musami, to understand the students' experience better.’

## **Inyathi High School**

## _Matabeleland North_

_Lucia made this visit before Thabani arrived. She writes:_

‘This school, the oldest formal educational institution in Zimbabwe, was established by missionaries in 1859: it’s affiliated with the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa.

‘Inyathi was a warm, welcoming environment with bright, willing students. I was especially interested in its self-sufficient farm – which helps provide a healthy locally-sourced diet for the students. This included a newly built reservoir and irrigation system, as well as chickens.

_The school farm at Inyathi High School. Photo taken by Lucia Chadburn for the Budiriro Trust._

## **Thekwane High School**

## _Matabeleland South_

## _Thabani writes:_

‘Thekwane School is 13 km north of Plumtree in Matabeleland. It was established in 1924. The strong Methodist values of the founder, the Reverend Herbert Carter, have been emphasised over the years.

‘The school has well-equipped classrooms and sports facilities. The school’s very active Alumni Association continue to make a positive impact on the school and its current students.’

_Continued on next page_

## _Budiriro, continued from previous page_

## **St. Paul’s, Musami High School**

## _Mashonaland East_

## _Thabani and Lucia write:_

‘St Paul’s, founded in 1965, is a prestigious co-educational private Catholic secondary school. The school’s integration with the local community fosters a sense of community and shared values.

‘The school aims to develop students holistically, to be not only academically sound but also socially responsible, and to give students the opportunity to develop their interests and hobbies outside of school hours.’

## **Girls’ College**

## _Bulawayo_

_This school, unlike the others visited, is not part- funded by Budiriro Trust in the form of A-Level scholarships._

## _Thabani writes:_

‘At Girls’ College I had the opportunity to give guidance to students on researching and applying to UK universities as international students. The engagement and interest from the Lower and Upper Six students were remarkable.’

## **What did we take away from the experience?**

## _Thabani and Lucia write:_

‘We explored these schools to the nth degree and took every opportunity to see everything we could. When there weren’t opportunities, we created new ones by asking questions.’

## _Thabani writes:_

‘Zimbabwe is like a second home to me but I came away with a new sense of independence by travelling there without my parents. Lucia and I experienced an education very different from ours in the UK.

‘Connecting with the Budiriro students made me grateful for everything that I have – I have seen the hardships that people face in Zimbabwe, so I have sympathy for them and I admire their dedication and motivation.

‘Through travelling with Lucia, I realised that young people in Zimbabwe have the same passions that we do – I even had the opportunity to play basketball after school with some of the students.’

## _Lucia writes:_

‘I had so much to gain with so much fulfilment and enjoyment – and overwhelming kindness, hospitality, like nothing I had ever experienced in the UK – amazing, considering the UK’s history with Zimbabwe.

The second thing was that these (very bright) kids were harder-working and getting better grades at A-Level than my peers in the UK were, often with no parents to support them. For the Budiriro kids, in particular, school was a safe place where they were guaranteed food, accommodation, and a sense of regularity often lacking at home.

‘I found at least a part of my independence in Zimbabwe – going somewhere I knew little about, especially on my own. I'm so grateful that I was surrounded

_Lucia and Thabani at Thekwane School. Photo taken for The Budiriro Trust._

by people who wanted to welcome me and make me feel safe. I left feeling responsible for myself and that my life is exactly what I would make of it.

‘What struck me most forcefully was the presence of religion. Religion is on the decline in the UK, but in Zimbabwe it’s different. Most of the schools had some sort of church attached to them, and all of them were religious. When I asked them about religion, they were always respectful of our beliefs and how things are different abroad. They always had a calm, respectful manner.

‘Lastly, there was the company. By travelling with Thabani, I made a friend for life. Thabani and I work well as a team and we have made memories to last all our lives.’

## **Conclusion – Thabani and Lucia**

‘We are both grateful to the Trust for this opportunity as it has enlightened us in so many ways. We are also grateful to all the families that hosted us at the schools and the headteachers. This was a truly unforgettable experience that we would recommend to any young person in the UK who is looking to expand their minds, experience and life.’

## **The Budiriro Trust**

The Budiriro Trust is a non-profit organisation supporting education in Zimbabwe by sending money for school fees where there is hardship.

It is run by a board of trustees in Britain and it has two co-ordinators in Zimbabwe, who act on behalf of the trust. It offers bursaries to young Zimbabweans to enable them to undertake A-level courses. These grants represent a commitment of two years and are made on the specific recommendation of head teachers.

The Trust is currently supporting six schools – three in the north and three in the south – and hopes eventually to be able to extend that support.

Details of how to donate to the Trust can be found at: _http://www.radisol-client.co.uk/education-charity-zimbabwe/donate.htm_

## NORTHERN SCHOOLS REPORT

2023 has been a great year in terms of results for our students. In both schools that we support, St. Paul’s Musami and Waddilove School, the students have produced really pleasing results that mean that the doors are open to them to change their lives in a fundamental way. The students have been able to secure university places, though sadly, some of them are unable to take up their places due to funding issues.

In terms of the management of the scholarship scheme, I have been pleased at the responsiveness of the senior leaders working directly with Budiriro, that is Mr Takawira at St Paul’s and Mrs Muvevi and Waddilove. This has meant greater efficiency in meeting the needs of the students, as well as Budiriro being able to be more engaged with the progress that the students have been making at their schools.

To conclude, lessons observed this year show a lot of engagement by the students with their work from the teaching available to them. I have every hope that next year’s cohort will continue to produce the good results we have come to expect.

## **- Southern Region Co ordinator’s Report to the Budiriro Trust for the Year Ending 30 June 2024**

Warm and tender greetings to the Trustees from all of us here in Zimbabwe. I bring special greetings from the Southern Region partner high schools i.e. Inyathi and Thekwane. This report will be for the eventful period covering July 2023 to June 2024

In this report I will attempt to cover the following activities:

- Payment of fees

- Selection of new bursars

- School visits, progress letters and reports

- Lucia and Thabani visit

- U6 2023 final results and performance

## **Payment of fees:**

Payment of fees went well during the course of the year. Fees was paid on time. The schools presented invoices on which the payments were based. Both schools, Inyathi and Thekwane invoiced on time for my onward transmission to the Treasurer for payment. Beginning of Term 2 2024 Thekwane fees were successfully transferred directly into their school account. I thank Emily for processing the transfers timeously. The country is still using multi-currencies for most transactions, however, we now have a new local currency in the name of Zimbabwe Gold, ZiG. (USD1:ZiG13.56 Current Official Rate) This new currency was introduced in May 2024, replacing the RTGS.

## **Selection of new 2024 bursars** :

The process of selecting 2024 bursars was completed in time for term 2 2024. Schools submitted the application letters, completed forms from the students and rankings by end of February 2024. All documents were forwarded to Sikhumbuzo and Emily as soon as l received them. Thekwane submitted 12 applications and Inyathi submitted 8 applications. All the applicants had a pass in English and Mathematics amongst other subjects. We used the same forms provided for bursar applications. I always remind the schools to follow the set Budiriro guidelines, use supplied forms and rank students accordingly.

## **School Visits, progress letters and reports:**

I managed to visit both schools Inyathi and Thekwane in June 2024, once the learners had settled in for their term 2. I met and interacted with both the current U6s and the L6 newbies. As customary by now, I shot videos that I have since shared via our WhatsApp group. The schools were busy with their sports this

8

term and one of our beneficiaries, Terrance at Thekwane, was away representing the school at provincial level. He plays tennis. Thekwane is busy preparing for their Centenary Celebrations this July. I visited Thekwane on their parents’ consultation day and had the chance to consult on behalf of Lindokuhle’s parents, who could not make it to the school. She was excited to take me around and I was only too happy to do the consultation. I emailed all termly progress reports and letters as soon as I got them from the schools. Every other year we do a biennial meeting with both L6 and U6 learners and parents/guardians, usually in Bulawayo, and we are due to do just that all allowing before year end.

## **Lucia and Thabani visit:**

During the month of July 2023 the schools hosted Lucia and Thabani for a few days. Lucia arrived in the country earlier and I drove her to Inyathi for her first visit there. She was hosted by one of the senior teachers at the school and it is good to note that they are in touch with one another. Unfortunately, I had a bad tyre puncture as we arrived at the school and was assisted in the tyre change by Bongani, one of the beneficiaries. Lucia was well looked after by the school and they drove her to Bulawayo on conclusion of her visit. Thabani then joined Lucia for the next visit which was to Thekwane. I picked both of them up in Bulawayo and drove them to Thekwane. They were well received at Thekwane and hosted by senior school teachers. They seem to have had good fun at Thekwane judging by comments I got from Thekwane learners. Most of them are now aware of Budiriro. For the third and final school placement Sikhu and I had to do a bit of running around and a few phone calls to secure a hosting school. Too much bureaucracy in most of the schools left us with limited choices. Sikhu finally managed to get a placement at St. Paul’s Musami in Murehwa. I drove both of them to St. Paul’s and left them in the safe hands of the deputy head. The school hosted them well. I am sure they enjoyed themselves and had a handful of pictures to show. It was wonderful to have them and go around the schools and interact with the learners in their daily environment.

## **U6 2023 final Results and performance:**

At Inyathi five students wrote and passed 2 or more A level exams. Their results are as follows:

Students who sat for 2 or more subjects at Thekwane were 87 from 89 in 2022, school pass rate was 100% versus 96.6% in 2022 and bursar pass rate 100%. Good luck to all our bursars and we wish them well in their chosen career paths. **Conclusion:** We congratulate the students for the effort put in and wish them well in their future endeavours. The economic situation is not getting any better in the country, this has been worsened by the lack of summer rains leading to a bad drought. Life is generally getting tougher and harder for the average person, with no money for essentials. The schools, beneficiaries and their families are forever grateful for all the support they are getting from Budiriro. We thank Lucia and Thabani for finding time to be with the schools, I am sure I would like to thank Budiriro for the continued support it is giving to those deserving assistance, especially during these trying times. Keep up the good work.

_Once again, we have received a number of letters of appreciation from some of our students and some of their parents. They are heart-warming to read. We present below excerpts from a few of these letters:_

“I am writing this note to express how thankful I am to the Trust for assisting my son, A.D. with funding for his ‘A’ Level education. Our family will forever be indebted to you, after the sudden loss of my husband, the burden of accumulating the funds for school fees was an unimaginable challenge which you took off my shoulders. This enabled him to be at school on time to start every term with the rest of his peers…Because of the Budiriro Trust Fund, A. excelled [in] his final ‘A’ Level Examinations with flying colours and scooped

15 points for his Science Combination…May God continue blessing and strengthening you to continue this remarkable work.” Mrs. S.D.

“I am writing…as a way of showing gratitude for the Bursary you are providing for me. I would really like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you have done for me. Now I can be able to learn without having to worry about financial needs. I look forward to pursuing my studies with a lot of dedication and with the best attitude I can show…I am very grateful for the kindness you have shown to my family and me by giving me the bursary. I am now very sure that my dreams will be fulfilled…I really appreciate your support and I also look forward to working very hard in my studies and excelling.” J.M.

“I…am deeply grateful for your support. This will enable me to achieve my dream goal as I am already pursuing the desired subjects for becoming a medical doctor…without the scholarship I would not be able to finish my education…The financial assistance will help me focus on my studies without any distractions regarding my financial status at school…Thank you for enabling me to pursue my dreams.”

T.A.H.

“Thank you for the kind gesture you showered upon me. This sponsorship has took the burden that was bound on my parents’ shoulders. Now I can focus on my goals and studies. I trust you will not regret giving me this scholarship as my results will prove this.”

D.D.

“I am writing…to express my heartfelt gratitude. Your support has been paramount in enabling me to pursue my academic goals and I am deeply thankful for the trust you have placed in me…I am glad to say that working hard has given me satisfactory results…I scored 3 points in pure mathematics, 4 points in chemistry, 3 points in physics and 5 points in computer science. STOP PRESS! We have recently signed up to easyfundraising where anyone can shop online with a number of large retailers and those retailers will make a donation to the Budiriro Trust. It will cost you nothing. The link to use is http://efraising.org/FIZBlG0Zyq If you are an on-line shopper, and would like to help with our fund-raising at no cost to yourself, we should be very grateful if you could sign up with this organisation.

Since we joined this scheme last year, we have earned over £100 for Budiriro, although so far only a small number of supporters have signed up. We would be immensely grateful if more of our supporters who do online shopping would sign up. This could offer significant help to our fund-raising efforts, at no cost to yourselves!

## TREASURER’S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED MARCH 2024

This year’s overall income has increased to just over £25.5K, this is mainly thanks to returning support from the Peter and Teresa Harris Charitable Trust and C B and H H Taylor 1984 Trust for which we are extremely grateful. We continue to receive approximately £14k per year by way of regular Direct debits and Standing orders. These help us to plan and budget with much more certainty so a big thank you to all of our supporters who donate in this way.

Over recent years we have been gradually using up the funds we had in savings. These had accumulated some years ago due, in part, to several significant bequests followed by a period of inactivity during the economic crisis in Zimbabwe prior to our re-launch in 2010. These funds are now reduced to a level that we need to significantly adjust our spending to ensure that for any new intake of students we can guarantee the resources to support that cohort to completion of their A level studies. On this basis, we have unfortunately had to make the difficult decision to reduce the number of new students to just 8 students in the new 2024 Lower sixth intake. If anyone has any fundraising ideas or is able to hold a coffee morning, cake sale or sponsored event please do contact us at budiriro.trust@tiscali.co.uk

Megan Chappell continues to work hard to keep our Facebook page updated with our current activities as well as hearing directly from some of our Budiriro Alumni. We hear some truly inspirational and uplifting stories from how our scholarships have impacted our students and their connections. These personal stories remind us of how vital the work we do is for these dedicated young people. We know that even a modest donation can make a big impact on someone’s life.

15

Tax reclaimed under the Gift Aid scheme continues to provide an important income stream, and this year we were able to claim back £3821 from eligible donations, which provides the funds for more ‘A’ level scholarships. If you are eligible and have not already done so, please do complete a Gift Aid declaration. These can be downloaded from the website, and sent to the Treasurer. The improving interest rates over the last twelve months have also benefitted us with over £772 earned on our CAF savings account.

We continue to use Currency UK (previously called FTT Global) for our foreign exchange transactions. They provide a fast, efficient dedicated service for Charities and we incur minimal charges compared to using the High Street Banks as well as often getting a more favourable exchange rate.

Thanks go to Tracy Rhys-Williams for providing us with bookkeeping services at a discounted rate. This removes a significant amount of work from the Treasurer’s shoulders for which I am very grateful. I also wish to thank Caroline Triggs who has kindly taken on the task of performing the Independent examination again this year.

As always, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your ongoing support, without which we would not be able to continue this much needed work. The economic situation in Zimbabwe is very fragile and unpredictable which makes planning ahead problematic and we watch with interest to see how the latest change in local currency will affect the cost of providing scholarships for us. We know that with your ongoing support and regular donations we can continue to provide support for our students during these uncertain times.

Mrs Emily Chadburn MRCVS Treasurer
