The trnstees present their report with the financial s￿eT￿ents of the chariry for the year ended 31 st Decefflber 2021. The
trustee5 have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting b), Chariiies.. Statement of Recommended Practice
applicable to chariiies preparino their accounts in accordance with the Financial R¢porting Stsndard applicable in the UK
and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) {effective l JanuaT), ?019).
ORJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and
The object of the Association is to advance African Studies. Particularly in the United Kingdom, by providiTtg facilTtie5 for
the interchange of infoTmatton and ideas and the ¢&ordinaiion of activitie5 by and between persons and insiiiutions
tonceTned with the study of Africa.
Public benefit
In shaping our objectives and plannintr our activiiies for the N'vdr. Ihe TTusiees hav¢ given consideration to the duiies set out
in Section 17{5) of the Charities Aci 201 I to have due r￿ard to public benefit. In panicular, Ihe Trustees have tonsideied
how the planned aciivities will contribuie to the overnll aims and objeciives thai ihey have set.
The TnEStees believe that ihat following paTagrdphs relate in detail to the benefit thai ihe Charity provides to the public.
ACHIEVEMENT Af4D PERFORMANCE
Charitable activities
In a year still blighted by the COVID-19 pandeTlliC, plan5 were in full swing for a three location Conference in person and
online, in September 2022. Titled Dtaspora Remillance Flows.- Restitution. CulttEre and Capital ￿'1th partners at IFRA
Ibadan. and the BIEA Nairobi, and Liverpool University.
The Trusiees approved a new award. The ASAUK Pogihumous Awar(Ls will be made to a s¢holar whom by their writin
ideas a￿d wider work made a signiftcant impact on AfrI￿n scholaT5hip. The inaugural prize will be awarded at the
Conferen¢e.
Collabordiiye work with the Ro)'al African Society and activtties of the All-Part)' Parliamentary Group for Africa (AAPPG)
continued, namely the education report on decolonising the C￿￿1£u1um, WOTk on researching the U'nilever ArchTves. and the
celebrat50n eyents marking the 120 year anniversary of the RAS.
The Mary Kingsley Zochonis Lecture involved two onl1￿c lectures given by Gibson Ncube and Dr Neo Pule. tilled
'Queerness is Unafrican?: The Complexity of Non-llorniative Sexual and Gender Identllies in Afiica. and 'Decoloni5ing
Research Methodologies in Psychology= Social Dream DraM'ing Siudies of the Student LeadershÈp Context in South Africa.
respectively. Both lectures were hosted online and Can be wai¢hed on ASAUK'5 YouTube. Both speakers were supported
by ASAUK in presenting panels ai the next African Swdies A&soCi￿10n of Afn"ca's conference taking place in Johannesburg
in 2022.
During the year. the Trnstees also appn)ved seveTal future focused 5tr&tegie5= developing partner organisation links and
ASAUKNextGen202(kF. For the fomier. the aim is for officeT5 to explore further developing links with partner
organisations, including the African Studies A550cialion: African Sthdies Associalion of Afiic& Lagos Studies Association
and Easiern African Liierary and Cultural Studies Associarion_
ASAUKNexiGen2020+ is a progrdmme to build and support the next ASAUK generdtion. The events bring UK-based
ASAUK members together with Africa-based collea.

Reserwts policy
The reserves policy is io mainiain an operdtional reserve equivalent to at leasi l Jeavs non-conference uniestricted
expenditure plus a £50.000 coniingency for any unforese¢n deficit arisino on the biennial conference. Ai )1 Deeember 2021
this amounts to about £90.000. The accumulaied unrestricred fund5 ai ihat date were £1 i1.717. The Trustees will review
how the exces5 of funds above the level of reserves determined b!. the chatitw's policy inay be best utilised in accoTd8nce
'ith its charitable objects, and in panicular with regard to the ne￿ financial and other challentses created by the Covid-19
pandemic.
Going concern
The Trustees are of the opinion that the asseis and reserves of the Society.- in ihe light of its committed income. expendithres
and cash flows. are adequate to support its on-going charitsble aciiviiies and obligaihon5.
Investment powtrs, Polic) and Perforniance
The Associaiion funds are invested with COIF ChariN Fund% administered by CCLA Investment Management Lirnited.
The T￿Stee5 are satisfied w'ith ihe perforn)ance of the funds. will allo￿ changes to a different COIF fund in response io
the very low snterest rates offered.
Grant making Policy
The Assocthation is not a grant making bodv bui does 50metiTnes made donations to charÉiies with similar aims to its own. It
also awards annual prizes io individuals in accordance with its aims.

The Tlusiees continue io review major risks aTKi implement policies desioned to reduce iheir possibility and impact.

The principal risk faeed by the Charl￿. is its abilily io secure adequaie incoTne to fund its Charitable aciivities. The
uncertainty created bv the Covid-19 pandemic, draws this risk into shaTper f(xus. There ￿.711 be a hybrid in-persL)n and
virtual biennial Conference in September 20?2. Historicallv ihe Conference has generated a sU￿]uS which has been
available to be used other charitsble activities. ASAUK are exploring alternative incotne styeams to make the
Association more sustainable in the future. The Trustee5 belIe￿e there are sufficient accumulaied reserves and fund5
available to enable theln to continue a Eneaningful progrdmme of charitable activities Én the next 2-3 years and in the long
