History of Wiltshire Rural Music
Wiltshire Rural Music is an independent charity set up in 1933 to provide music (singing and instrumental) lessons to school children in Wiltshire and lead music/choral performances in rural communities in an age when far more people played and sang. The educational element changed in 1979 when the Local Education Authority formally took responsibility for school music.
Now, Wiltshire Rural Music brings the joy of professional live music performances and music making to isolated/marginalised communities (both as a result of rural isolation and societal isolation) and to people on low incomes across Wiltshire.
We want to ensure that live music of all kinds, but especially classical and acoustic, continues to be learnt and heard in a modern world where even whistling is hardly heard. Ear-buds can provide continuous streamed music – but take away the shared community provided by live performance.
2
Our Mission and Objectives
We believe everyone in Wiltshire should have the opportunity to discover, explore and engage with music-making. We provide music for all stages of life - from the early years to retirement, and everything in between. Through our rural outreach programmes, ( Keep Music In Mind, Musical Lunch Club, Rural Recitals), we will enable Wiltshire’s remote and isolated communities to access participatory music-making opportunities on their doorstep, offering them a social outlet when they
need it most. We will support and encourage people of all ages to progress their musical learning through our Bursaries and Awards programmes. From our building, we will provide an inspiring space for our local community in Trowbridge, where music can be made, appreciated and celebrated.
Our Values
-
Music is for everyone and there should be no barriers to participation.
-
Working in collaboration with individuals and communities to provide bespoke opportunities to meet their needs, interests and ambitions.
-
To support, encourage and nurture all forms of music-making. Music is for the mind, the soul and the body.
-
Support any and all efforts to use music to aid with health and wellbeing, both mental and physical, regardless of age, race, gender or ability.
-
Making music should be inclusive and diverse, open and accessible to all.
-
To support lifelong musical learning.
-
To bring music and social activity to isolated individuals and groups within rural villages and towns.
-
To enrich the lives of Wiltshire residents
Overview of our activities
Keep Music in Mind – Ongoing
An ongoing project whereby WRM sends professional musicians into Care Homes and Memory Cafes throughout Wiltshire, providing live music to enrich and inspire those who attend. Music has been proven to unlock memories and boost wellbeing in Alzheimer’s patients and the results speak for themselves. A sleepy care home lounge is transformed into tapping toes and broad grins once the music starts. Keep Music in Mind has brought violinists, singers, clarinettist and piano players into homes and cafes on 47 occasions throughout the year, bringing smiles to an average of 15 people every time. In a 12 month period we have
3
visited care homes and memory cafes in Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon, Chippenham, Warminster, Swindon, Westbury, Devizes and Corsham.
Musical Lunch Club – Fortnightly
Funded with thanks by Wiltshire Community Foundation, the Musical Lunch Clubs runs from February 2024 – February 2026. Based at our Gloucester Road hub, we welcome over 65s from the local community for an hour of singalongs, musical memory games and live performance, followed by a simple lunch. The aim is to target those craving social interaction, providing them with a reason to leave the house and the opportunity to make friends whilst enjoying music from professional artists.
Tune@Noon - monthly
On the 2[nd] Wednesday of the month we open our doors to the local music lovers for our monthly Tune@Noon – an hour’s concert for £5, which includes unlimited coffee and cake. We have enjoyed sets from Claire King & Sue Lord, Beckford Strings, John Gutteridge and Slow Jam. Our audience numbers have been steady throughout the year as we now expect 19-25 through the door every month, bringing an average of £93 back into the charity’s pockets.
4
Liz Lawrence Award
An annual invite for applications from young musicians heading off to study music at further education. The Liz Lawrence Award is a £1,000 prize for one 17-18 year old who has shown skill and promise in their musical discipline. After an informal audition, the winner is presented with a cheque as well as the opportunity to curate their own winner’s concert the following summer. The concerts are a showcase of their talent as well as the chance to collaborate with musical friends and colleagues in a one off performance celebrating THEM, all with the support of WRM. Previous 4 > V4 i winners have played at Longleat House, Edington
Priory and Wiltshire Music Centre. The 2024 winner is bassoonist Bethan Cheshire from Westbury who’s concert is in July at Wiltshire Music Centre.
Instrument Hire
We have a huge range of classical and acoustic instruments available for hire in varying sizes. We offer these instruments on a daily or quarterly basis for more permanent learners, particularly giving younger learners the opportunity to try out an instrument, alleviating the expense of buying an instrument for just a trial period. We supported 7 adults and 29 young students over the course of the year with this service. ABRSM runs their termly exams from our centre too, with a team of volunteers, appointed by WRM, stewarding for a period of 3/4 days. We welcomed an average of 50 students per session over three terms of the year. So that’s 150 nervous candidates who are welcomed by our kind stewards on the day of their exam.
Bursaries
Wiltshire Rural Music provides bursaries and financial assistance for musical families who may need help with music tuition and related expenses. This is available to all children and adults
5
residing in Wiltshire. Funding meetings take place on a termly basis and students are assessed regularly to keep WRM in the loop with their learning and progress.

Our Hub
113 Gloucester Road in Trowbridge is a vibrant and busy venue, where ensembles rehearse, individuals teach and practice and young people learn. As well as our WRM ensembles (Saturday Orchestra, Ebonite Clarinet Choir, String-A-long, Singing Mamas, String Ensemble), the venue is also home to our monthly Tune@Noon events, at which local musicians perform an hour-long concert to WRM members and the general public. Our hub is also often hired by external groups such as, the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music for the Trowbridge area exam hub (3 times per year), Wiltshire Young Musicians for their weekly Trowbridge Junior String group, Doves singing choir, a flute choir, plus individuals for private hire.

Publicity & Social Media
As well as our Newsletter that goes out to registered members three times a year (Summer, Winter and Easter), our social media following has continued to grow. Facebook may be on slow-down, but it’s worth noting that the mid to older generations still really turn to it for information in the community. We’ve seen some active engagement from the “20 Years of Liz Lawrence” campaign which has dug into the archives to see where the alumni are now. Thanks to reaching out to FB groups in Trowbridge and surrounding areas, we have really seen a huge growth in our Tune@Noon audiences, particularly from neighbouring streets. Instagram has allowed us to reach younger groups using reels and short videos - this has particularly worked for the newest Singing Mamas choir. Trowbridge’s local newspaper ‘Celebrate’ has also given us a great deal of column inches to shout about what we do which has been a huge help. And our local radio (BBC Wiltshire and West Wilts Radio) have been very supportive in spreading the word on our events.

Fundraising
We are pleased to report that Wiltshire Rural Music secured £19,460 in the financial year 2024-5. We would like to thank all the trusts, foundations, local councils and businesses for their support. We could not carry out our valuable work without their help. Wiltshire Rural Music employs a freelance funding consultant for 44 days a year (increased from 3 days a week in the last financial year.) The current consultant, Rachael Holtom, has been in post since May 2023, and this year’s donations reflect an accumulation of her sustained effort, and the relatively new WRM team having a greater understanding of funding, including the importance of acknowledging and keeping in touch with funders, and of good evaluation. We have a firm foundation to build on.
Fifty applications were made to trusts, foundations and local councils in 2024-5. A further two (for bursaries and Keep Music In Mind) were sent to the Ludlow Group which administers approximately 250 T&Fs and filters to the most appropriate. The WRM team has also compiled evaluation reports for all funders. These include photos and quotes from people we have helped, if available.
We were grateful to have received 19 grants from funders during this year. Some applications were written in 2023-4 (there is often a significant period between submission and decision.)

Chairman’s Report - Peggy Snell
Welcome to this year's report from the chairman of the trustees.
Well what a splendid year we’ve had. The good news is last July I contacted Siân Dicker (Soprano Singer) to see if she would consider becoming the President of Wiltshire Rural Music, we are delighted to welcome Siân as President and she has already attended our trustees meetings.
Not so good news, trustee Graham Coatman decided to devote his energies to musical projects in a different part of the country and has resigned, we are sorry to see him go but thank him for his input and wish him well in the future.
Tune at Noon, we have had a lovely group of
regulars attend the hub to listen to music provided by Sian and Rob Bluegrass Duo, Brass Chamber Group, Sloejam, Lucy Hewson and Lorna Davis, Beckford Strings, Sue Lord, Claire King and David Knowles, a big thank you to all the musicians and singers for giving their time to entertain us. It is nice to see the regulars enjoying themselves over a piece of cake and tea/coffee as they listen.
The Lunch Club has gone from strength to strength, and it is really lovely to see so many smiling faces and watch some of the people making new friends and getting involved with the music, as well as eating their lunch.
The Liz Lawrence Award 2024 was won by Bethan Cheshire (Bassoonist) who received a cheque presented by Deputy Mayor Stewart Palmén. She will be performing in the Music Centre (Bradford on Avon) Friday 18th July accompanied by members of her family. This is not to be missed, this young lady will go far.
Over the passed year Rachael, our fundraiser has worked tirelessly to raise funding for a number of projects namely the Lunch Club, Keep Music in Mind and maintenance projects
10
which needed addressing, like a new path around the building for health and safety, repairs to the front wall, the fire escape/back stairs to the flat upstairs. Well done Rachael for your dedication.
Sue and Daisy’s contributions are priceless - to Sue who keeps everything ticking over and addresses any issues which may arise and to Daisy who inspires musicians to give their time to entertain and find new projects to aim for in the future a very big thank you to you both, the three Sue, Daisy and Rachael make sure it’s a great team together, well done to each of you.
On a different vein it would be nice if we had a few more Trustees - if anyone would like to join our team you would be more than welcome, give it a go you might find you enjoy it.
We have been very fortunate to receive a gift from the will of Audrey Catford and her estate.
A final thank you to our band of volunteers, a big thank you, without your help Sue, Daisy and Rachael would be run ragged so keep up the good - work we need you. May we continue to bring music in all its forms to the residents of Wiltshire.
Peggy
BUSINESS PLANNING
Full details of our financial position can be found in our annual accounts, where it can be seen that we are now operating with a surplus, but we must no rely on this. For that reason, the board continues to concentrate our efforts on our core function, that of assisting young people in their musical education, older people in Wiltshire as well as reaching new communities with new projects currently in planning.
To that end, the Board continues to support the statement from previous reports that we would:
Protect and safeguard the assets of our charity against unforeseen emergency Protect against unforeseen day-to-day operational costs
Protect our Bursaries and Awards which give financial support to the people of Wiltshire
STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE BOARD
Company law requires the Board to prepare financial statements for each financial year, which give a true and fair view of the affairs of the Company and of the profit and loss for that period. In preparing these financial statements, the Council is required to:
