History of Wiltshire Rural Music
Wiltshire Rural Music is an independent charity set up in 1933 to provide music (singing and instrumental) lessons to school children in Wiltshire and lead music/choral performances in rural communities in an age when far more people played and sang. The educational element changed in 1979 when the Local Education Authority formally took responsibility for school music.
Now, Wiltshire Rural Music brings the joy of professional live music performances and music making to isolated/marginalised communities (both as a result of rural isolation and societal isolation) and to people on low incomes across Wiltshire.
We want to ensure that live music of all kinds, but especially classical and acoustic, continues to be learnt and heard in a modern world where even whistling is hardly heard. Ear-buds can provide continuous streamed music – but take away the shared community provided by live performance.
2
Our Mission and Objectives
We believe everyone in Wiltshire should have the opportunity to discover, explore and engage with music-making. We provide music for all stages of life - from the early years to retirement, and everything in between. Through our rural outreach programmes, ( Keep Music In Mind, Musical Lunch Club, Rural Recitals), we will enable Wiltshire’s remote and isolated communities to access participatory music-making opportunities on their doorstep, offering them a social outlet when they
need it most. We will support and encourage people of all ages to progress their musical learning through our Bursaries and Awards programmes. From our building, we will provide an inspiring space for our local community in Trowbridge, where music can be made, appreciated and celebrated.
Our Values
-
Music is for everyone and there should be no barriers to participation.
-
Working in collaboration with individuals and communities to provide bespoke opportunities to meet their needs, interests and ambitions.
-
To support, encourage and nurture all forms of music-making. Music is for the mind, the soul and the body.
-
Support any and all efforts to use music to aid with health and wellbeing, both mental and physical, regardless of age, race, gender or ability.
-
Making music should be inclusive and diverse, open and accessible to all.
-
To support lifelong musical learning.
-
To bring music and social activity to isolated individuals and groups within rural villages and towns.
-
To enrich the lives of Wiltshire residents
Overview of our activities
Hear Our Song – November 2023
Funded with thanks by the Walter Guinness Charitable Trust. Hear Our Song was a song writing workshop for 6-10 year olds, lead by local songwriter Felicity Courage and in partnership with Voices For Life - a children’s singing workshop charity based in Bath and Trowbridge. The children, from Christchurch School and the Home Education Community, attended sessions whereby they learnt the basics of songwriting, including phrasing and rhyming. In total, 64 under 10s took part in the workshops and the project culminated in a live
3
performance of their fantastic compositions at Wiltshire Music Centre in front of 200 people, accompanied by a live band. The songs written can be heard here: https://wiltshireruralmusic.bandcamp.com/album/hear-our-song
Keep Music in Mind – Ongoing
An ongoing project whereby WRM sends professional musicians into Care Homes and Memory Cafes throughout Wiltshire, providing live music to enrich and inspire those who attend. Music has been proven to unlock memories and boost wellbeing in Alzheimer’s patients and the results speak for themselves. A sleepy care home lounge is transformed into tapping toes and broad grins once the music starts. Keep Music in Mind has brought violinists, singers, clarinettists and piano players into homes and cafes on occasions per year, bringing smiles to an average of 15 people every time. In a 12 month period we have visited care homes and memory cafes in Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon, Chippenham, Warminster, Swindon and Downton.
Musical Lunch Club – Fortnightly
Funded with thanks by Wiltshire Community Foundation, the Musical Lunch Clubs run from February 2024 – February 2026. Based at our Gloucester Road hub, we welcome over 65s from the local community for an hour of singalongs, musical memory games and live performance, followed by a simple lunch. The aim is to target those craving social interaction, providing them with a reason to leave the house and the opportunity to make friends whilst enjoying music from professional artists.
4
Tune@Noon - monthly
On the 2[nd] Wednesday of the month we open our doors to the local music lovers for our monthly Tune@Noon – an hour’s concert for £5, which includes unlimited coffee and cake. We have enjoyed sets from violinist Sue Lord, cellist Kate Robey, Doves Peace Choir and Drum Together. Our audiences have grown since covid dissipated as we now expect 35-40 through the door every month, bringing an average of £120 back into the charity’s pockets.
Liz Lawrence Award
An annual invite for applications from young musicians heading off to study music at further education. The Liz Lawrence Award is a £1,000 prize for one 17-18 year old who has shown skill and promise in their musical discipline. After an informal audition, the winner is presented with a cheque as well as the opportunity to curate their \7 Ls a own winner’s concert the following summer. The concerts are a showcase of their talent as well as the chance to collaborate with musical friends and colleagues in a one off performance celebrating THEM, all with the support of WRM. Previous winners have played at Longleat House, Edington Priory and Wiltshire Music Centre. The 2023 winner is jazz pianist Thomas Sladden from Malemesbury who’s concert is in July at Wiltshire Music Centre.
Instrument Hire
We have a huge range of classical and acoustic instruments available for hire in varying sizes. We offer these instruments on a daily or quarterly basis for more permanent learners, particularly giving younger learners the opportunity to try out an instrument, alleviating the expense of buying an instrument for just a trial period. We supported 6 adults and 23 young students over the course of the year with this service. ABRSM runs their termly exams from our centre too, with a team of volunteers, appointed by WRM, stewarding for a period of 3/4 days. We welcome, no average, 50 students per session over three terms of the year. So that’s 150 nervous candidates who are welcomed by our kind stewards on the day of their exam.

Bursaries
Wiltshire Rural Music provides bursaries and financial assistance for musical families who may need help with music tuition and related expenses. This is available to all children and adults residing in Wiltshire. Funding meetings take place on a termly basis and students are assessed regularly to keep WRM in the loop with their learning and progress.

Our Hub
113 Gloucester Road in Trowbridge is a vibrant and busy venue, where ensembles rehearse, individuals teach and practice and young people learn. As well as our WRM ensembles (Saturday Orchestra, Ebonite Clarinet Choir, String-A-long, Singing Mamas, String Ensemble), the venue is also home to our monthly Tune@Noon events, at which local musicians perform an hour-long concert to WRM members and the general public. Our hub is also often hired by external groups such as, the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music for the Trowbridge area exam hub (3 times per year), Wiltshire Young Musicians for their weekly Trowbridge Junior String group, Doves singing choir, a flute choir, plus individuals for private hire.

Publicity & Social Media
As well as our Newsletter that goes out to registered members three times a year (Summer, Winter and Easter), our social media following has continued to grow. Facebook may be on slow-down, but it’s worth noting that the mid to older generations still really turn to it for information in the community. Thanks to reaching out to FB groups in Trowbridge and surrounding areas, we have really seen a huge growth in our Tune@Noon audiences, particularly from neighbouring streets. Instagram has allowed us to reach younger groups using reels and short videos - this has particularly worked for the newest Singing Mamas choir. Trowbridge’s local newspaper ‘Celebrate’ has also given us a great deal of column inches to shout about what we do which has been a huge help. And our local radio (BBC Wiltshire and West Wilts Radio) have been very supportive in spreading the word on our events.
Fundraising
This has been a critical year for Wiltshire Rural Music, as we strived to recover from the £20,000 deficit from 2023-4. This deficit was due to a variety of reasons: the lingering effect of the Covid era; staff changes resulting in hiatus in funding applications and ticketed events; the 2022 economic crisis’ impact on investments; the cost of living crisis - combined with an increase in activity as ‘we got back to normal’. We have weathered the storm and are now in a stronger position, having halved that deficit. Our fundraising strategy has involved the following:
Applications to Trusts and Foundations
In April 2023 Wiltshire Rural Music hired a new freelance Fundraising Consultant, Rachael Holtom, who was contracted to work 3 days a month for 11 months of the year. Thirty-nine applications to trusts and foundations were made in the financial year 2023-4. Eight of these were successful, and six payments totalling £15,226 were received by the end of March 2024. They are listed below.
We would like to thank the following:

We are very pleased to receive notification of grants from Music For All (Bursaries) and The Ammco Trust (Keep Music In Mind) which were received early in April 2024. We would like to thank the following organisations for their continued vital support of the charity.
Fundraiser Concert
At the end of 2023 it was decided that we could run an event that would really shout about who we are, and what we do. With a never ending list of musicians and artists at our disposal, it seemed like a musical concert in Trowbridge would provide the perfect celebration. The beautiful Emmanuel’s Yard was offered to us at a discounted rate, and we filled the room with acts from the county, including Trowbridge & District Youth Band, Ebonite Clarinet Ensemble,
Doves Peace Choir and Daisy Chapman. Over two hours, we welcomed just under 100 people through the door, who enjoyed drinks from the local gin distillery, Still Sisters, and brewery Kettlesmiths. We raised over £800 in profit and not only did it line our pockets, but it also provided a stage for us to sing about what we do, and advertise our wonderful ensembles and services. People are still talking about the evening, it was a huge success.
WRM 100 Club
This initiative raised £1,015.00 towards the charity’s core costs over the year. Thank you to all who take part.

Chairman's Re ort- Peggy Snell Where to begin? I think the years are getting shorter as they seem to come around a lot quicker. This last year has had its ups and downs. Last September we said goodbye to Kirsten our Creative Director as she decided to return to Cornwall to pursue her career, we were sorry to see her go. This left us with a dilemma however having spoken with Daisy, our Press Officer who had been working closely with Kirsten on projects, Daisy agreed to take up the challenge temporarily and is now doing both jobs, and I would like to say Daisy is doing very well so a very big thank you. Following last years AGM we were given a brilliant display by Timur, a young musician from St. Augustine's School who played piano with music and from memory a number of pieces what an inspiration, we also received a cheque from St Augustine's School presented by Richard O'mahony (Head of Music). Tune at noon continues to thrive with the continued support of musicians who travel from all over the county to the hub to perform. MII 14JIIA We are so grateful to all the musicians who support us - Beckford Strings, Kistina Takashina, David Knowles and Karen Goddard, Peter French, Bissboro Wind Trio, Doves Peace Choir, Claire King, David Knowles, Faith Hutton, Sian Dicker and Krystsl Tunnicliffe, Sue Lord, Charlotte Dunling, Emma Davies - without you there would be no music. Ludmila has given us a couple of brilliant concerts at the hub which were well attended as usual. We thank her and her fellow musicians for their continued support. What a delight it was to have our Ebonite Clarinet Ensemble perform at the Trowbridge Weaver's Market a flagship monthly event visited by the whole community. It was a pleasure to provide musicians for the market. At the September meeting it was agreed that Graham Coatman would be Vice Chairman and we would share the work between us, a very big thank you Graham for your help. There have been new projects throughout the year with Charlotte Sloane-Hill's String-a-long concert at Trowbridge Town Hall, in which a few young pupils were given the opportunity to perform to a live audience. Hear Our Song was another new project, approximately 250 local children wrote their song in partnership with Voices For Life and put together by Felicity Courage, the children enjoyed the challenge and who knows one or two may in later life be song writers we all recognise. Keep Music in Mind has travelled all over the county delivering music to care homes and other groups, and spreading the word thanks to the musicians who support us and provide enjoyable music to those listening and some of the audience occasionally joining in if they can. 10
The Liz Lawrence Award Concert was given by Gabriel Longbotham, 2022 winner, accompanied by Madeleine his sister at The Cause Chippenham was a great succe55 Wlth music played on the Organ, Piano, Guitar and Flute what a great evening, it was lovely to see Mary Teed who sponsors the award each year also enjoying it. The 2023 winner, pianist Thomas Sladden, will perform at Wiltshire Music Centre in July 2024. We haven't had any success in finding someone to take on the position of President or Treasurer, all our attempts to fill both positions have drawn a blank but we will continue to search and if anyone out there has any suggestions l am happy to follow them up. Funding of WRM is of vital importance. without it we would not be able to continue. Thanks to Rachael who has worked her socks off to get funding from places you would not believe. We are now getting a gradual flow of funds. Last year, with Rachael's help, the trustees had a meeting with David Dawson who put forward a number of valid suggestions to help us in the future. I would like to finish this report with grateful thanks to Sue who does a tremendous job of keeping everything ticking over day to day. to Daisy for taking on two jobs, to Rachael for her fundraising, to Graham for his help as Vice Chair, our Trustees for their continued support and to all our Volunteers for what you do to help. So until next year, enjoy whatever music you like to listen to and smi le.
