The object of the Association is to advance the education and training of graduates in medicine, dentistry, related arts and sciences and to promote medical and dental research. In addition, the Association provides money to help with the equipment and maintenance of the premises known as the Philip Farrant Education Centre.
This year, as in previous years, the Charity supported a number of courses which were held within the Education Centre. These courses included the delivery of four DPMA Practical Procedures workshops. These workshops cover practical/hands on training on Ultrasound guided Intravenous cannulation, Arterial Blood gas, Lumbar puncture, Diagnostic Paracentesis (Ascitic tap) and Diagnostic Thoracentesis (Pleural tap). The target audience is Foundation Year Resident doctors, Locally Employed Doctors/ Trust doctors, Physician Associates and Medical students working within Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust. The courses were well attended and received excellent feedback.
As part of the mandatory Foundation Resident Doctors teaching programme, the Charity hosted the annual Christmas quiz, this is a great opportunity for the Resident doctors to come together at what is a very busy time and it is always highly appreciated. To recognise the hard work of our Resident Doctors and Educators at the end of the academic year the charity also hosts an End of Year Awards. Within this celebration, we award prizes to the SAS/Locally Employed Doctor of the Year, Most Supportive Consultant, Most Supportive Nurse, Most Supportive Allied Health Professional, Most Supportive Ward, Outstanding Teacher and Resident Doctor of the Year 2023-2024. This is a wonderful opportunity to thank our staff for their hard work over the year, helping to provide a centre of excellence for training and education.
The initiative to provide financial support for research, the Tariq Shafi Awards, continues to be offered and the charity is proud to have supported six Residents Doctors over the past year. The Trustees hope to further expand this support in the coming year, raising awareness of the how the charity can support doctors and the importance of research and publications.
In the coming year the Charity will be restarting the GP CME Updates, which will be an education programme delivered monthly to the local GP doctors, delivered by the consultants within the Trust. The aim of this programme is develop and strengthen the link between primary and secondary care, helping to aid the referral pathways.
The 56th Annual General Meeting of the Dartford Postgraduate Medical Association will be held on Wednesday 11 June 2025.
