The Board of Trustees oversee the strategic, financial and legal affairs of the Trust. The Trustees are responsible for all policies, planning, scrutinising and reporting involving the financial resources and personnel for the Board of Trustees approval. ## **Delegated responsibilities** The Board of Trustees delegates day-to-day operational management of the School to the Workers Co-operative who are responsible for implementing the policies and strategies of the organisation and within budgets approved by the Trust. In order to remain compliant with changing legislation the Trustee board has restructured the staff arrangements to ensure the future financial viability of MWC. A contract has been made between the Trustee board and the Workers Co-operative to provide management services for the trust. ## **Risk Management** The Board of Trustees has overall responsibility for ensuring major strategic, compliance and business risks facing the organisation are identified and controls are in place. The Trust has a range of policies and procedures to ensure the health and safety of staff, volunteers, participants and visitors. These are regularly reviewed (at least quarterly) to ensure they remain fit for purpose. 2 of 5 ## **Objectives** The objects for which the company are established as amended on 1st December 2013 are: - a) promoting for the benefit of the public ways of living sustainably, using methods that respect the limits of the planets environment, resources and biodiversity - b) advancing the education of the public in sustainable living - c) advancing the education of the public in the protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment - d) to preserve for the benefit of the people of Dorset and the nation at large the buildings of special architectural and historic interest known as Monkton Wyld Court in the County of Dorset ## **We aim to be welcoming, inclusive and responsive.** Monkton Wyld School achieves this vision by: - Striving to be an environmentally and ethically sound organisation - Developing staff to be motivated, dedicated, engaged and effective - Provides excellent teaching and learning opportunities for our diverse clientele - Treating all equally, fairly and professionally - Effectively raising awareness and communicating sustainably via our daily actions and ethos - Enhancing overall learner experience - Being financially sustainable The Workers Co-operative at Monkton Wyld School are a skilled and qualified workforce enabling all visiting learners and visitors to gain new skills and develop their own personal opportunities. Staff and volunteers are active members of the local community. ## **Activities** Our main activities in promotion of Education for Sustainable living are: - Land based skills programme - Running residential and day courses focused on land based skills and low impact living primarily focused on adult learning; - Community education resource - Providing a resource for local people to have facilities for land based education and recreational learning; - It is used as a venue for groups and individuals wanting to host their own - events/workshops/courses or celebrations; - Supporting local people in their learning and development through education programmes and courses for local people; - Educational tourism -Providing family learning holidays and camping and low-impact accommodation for students /learners. - Early years learning –We operate 1 toddler group ‘Wyld Toddler’ and provide weekly workshops for home educated children. We have links with local scout and cub groups who visit regularly to do outdoor and woodworking activities. - Two parent and toddler groups are also based here which allow the very young to get an experience of rural land based activities such as planting and sowing as well as story telling and reading and core curriculum studies; 3 of 5 - Supporting local schools in partnership working - Schools are often hosted to learn about sustainable living and farming as well as heritage coastal environment close by; - Hosting an innovative micro-dairy and farming enterprise - Farm and land a rented out to a resident tenant smallholder who has three Jersey cows producing organic milk, cheese, yoghurt, butter and other dairy products for the community, guests and volunteers; - Hosting the Scythe Shop, a low-cost tenanted micro-enterprise based in converted cow shed for the sale of scythes mainly by mail order. Offices - Low cost tenanted space for headquarters of The Land Magazine and the Scythe Association of Britain and Ireland. These two independent enterprises whose main objectives are education for sustainable living are both nationally and internationally important; THE LAND MAGAZINE, an occasional fully referenced and international publication now and its 24th issue, which covers a broad range of subjects concerning environmental ethics and practice. The magazine also campaigns for improved access to land for all, and the repopulation of the countryside for sustainable land based projects. This overlaps with the Monkton Wyld School ethos and provides a sound theoretical underpinning to the practical work, training and courses carried out at Monkton Wyld School. ## www.thelandmagazine.org.uk THE SCYTHE ASSOCIATION OF BRITAIN and IRELAND (SABI) - The replacement of petrol-powered mowing machines (strimmers etc.) by modern Austrian scythes is a rapidly growing national movement - scythes are now being used by many County Councils, the National Trust, Wildlife Trusts, in many national rural and city parks, and for volunteer conservation projects nationwide. The Scythe Association Association provides broad-based training in the use of hand tools and appropriate technology, and low-impact land maintenance including hay making by traditional methods; courses are held at Monkton Wyld and across the country. www.scytheassociation.org ## **Volunteers** Due to restrictions caused by the Covid pandemic we have had fewer volunteers working at Monkton Wyld School (MWS) this year. Since March 2020 we had 3 long term volunteers with us for a year. We were able to take on a number of short term volunteers once restrictions were lifted. Working in partnership with the WWOOF charity, volunteers learn many new skills from scything through to bottling and preserving, woodland management, horticulture and dairy work. Volunteers work in our gardens, kitchen, grounds, house, wood shed, woodland and office in return for food, lodgings and a taste of communal living. There is a full training programme for those who stay longer than a week and all volunteers can go away with a pocket full of new skills. For long term local volunteers there are individual programs in place, negotiated with each volunteer, depending on their ability. Most volunteers come to see us via the international charity WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). We see volunteering as vitally important to the ongoing development and support of the charity. Here are some of the benefits that our WWOOFers gain: - Reskilling and helping them to revitalise their knowledge; - First-hand experience and learning about organic farming, growing, harvesting, preserving and animal husbandry; - Meet and find inspiration in your like-minded people; both with the Monkton Wyld School hosts and other WWOOFers they meet here; 4 of 5 - Rediscover the relationship between local food production, social community and spirit; - Taste totally fresh produce; - Experience new places and acquire a wealth of experience for a very small financial outlay. ## **Preservation at the heritage building** Our main activities in relation to maintenance of the heritage buildings are: - An ongoing maintenance to preserve the fabric of the heritage buildings and prevent deterioration; - A programme to restore and rebuild the historic walled garden - An improvement programme to restore the heritage building. ## **Public Benefit Statement** The Trustees with the staff developed their Business Plan 2017- 22.
