ENGLISH SCHOOLS CRICKET ASSOCIATION Annual Re ort 2024 ENGLISH SCHOOLS CRICKET ASSOCIATION

Annual Report 2024

2024 was the year we hoped schools would be returning to the playing of cricket and in particular to all of our competitions. Our County Secretaries and Competition Secretaries have worked hard to achieve this. Our County returns will show us exactly where we are with this.

As always we hoped that the weather would be kind to us and we would successfully complete our County and National competitions. Our County and National Organisers deserve that.

The National rounds got off to a good start in spite of the weather and were completed on time. Some of our County Finals would be completed in September, which is an extension of the deadline date.

The ESCA caravan rolled into our first finals. The U15 Cup followed by The David English and the U11 Hardball Finals were as always held at Oakham School.

The U15 Cup got underway, Scarborough College would play Millfield. Scarborough College won the toss and elected to bat posting a formidable total 305 for 4 from their 40 overs. Millfield openers posted 74 for the 1[st] wicket but lost their way being all out for 237.

Scarborough U15 Champions for 2024.

The next day saw the David English U13 Final, Kings School versus Epsom School. Kings batted first totalling 153 all out. Epsom College chased hard reaching 157-7. Epsom College the U13 Champions for 2024. A hard fought game.

We were all looking forward to the ESCA U11 Hardball finals on Thursday. The weather promised to be good for the whole of the day, which was very encouraging for one and all.

All the teams arrived early so we were off to a prompt start. Chris Twort the ESCA organiser was very pleased with that. The 8 teams were split into the Cooper and Hemingway League.

The groundstaff had as always prepared the wickets to a high standard. We were ready to go. The umpires and scorers were in place as we began on time. That does help when a long day is ahead of us.

Having packed lunches (Which were excellent) help to restrict the amount of movement at lunchtime.

The final between Twyford School and Feltonfleet School was a tightly fought game with Feltonfleet School winning by 6 runs.

  1. FELTONFLEET SCHOOL

  2. TWYFORD SCHOOL

  3. BLUE COAT SCHOOL

  4. CHIGWELL SCHOOL

  5. BEACON SCHOOL

  6. MANCHESTER GRAMMAR SCHOOL

  7. MILLFIELD PREP SCHOOL

  8. JESSE GRAY PRIMARY SCHOOL

This ended an excellent days cricket with the presentations conducted by Mr Ashman (ESCA Chairman) and Mr C Twort the excellent organiser of the day and how well that was organised. We are all looking forward to next year.

The T20 organisation of the day is reported on by Giles in his excellent summary of the semi-finals and grand final. He also wrote excellent reports on the U15 Cup and the David English U13 Cup, which was attended by the very good friend of David English, Lia.

It was good to see Paul Bedford who always gives good advice, pending meetings with Sue Laister.

We offer our thanks to the Umpires and Eddie McGeown (Scorer), Emma (Physio) and Julie Morton (Photographer) all of who work tirelessly for ESCA. The Chairman Giles Ashman worked hard under trying circumstances. Parents joined us, which was great and we all including Giles (Chairman) made them as welcome as we could. Giles did sterling work as he completed his year as our redoubtable Chairman. Now Mr President many thanks for all the support you give to ESCA. We are lucky to have you as our President.

We continue to work with ECB, MCC and Sport Alliance. These partnerships are important to us. We are still the lead Association providing school’s cricket.

As an Association we face challenges from others who are providing cricket which has been traditionally ours, we must face these challenges and provide

cricket for all our schools especially State Schools, fitting in with their needs. A State School competition would be a great addition to our programme, moves are already afoot.

ESCA through its Counties Competitions and National Rounds provided a very competitive programme of cricket. All our finals were successfully completed. A testament to the hard work of all involved in the organisation of these National and County rounds finals. We owe a great debt of gratitude to all those involved this year.

We must continue to develop our Partnership with Sue Laister and Girls Cricket and meet up with Laura at the ECB. The President, the Chairman and the General Secretary will report on this.

We must also thank Paul Bedford for all the support he offers us and thank Laura and Lottie for helping us secure funding for the T20 Competition for another year, we hope for the same for 2025.

We are very grateful for the extra financial support from the ECB. We would struggle without it. We must continue our meetings with the ECB

Every year I say it’s what we do, that is certainly true this year.

The meeting with Laura, Paul Bedford, the President the Chairman and myself was productive and promising.

For the 1[st] time in a number of years we have a Vice-Chairman. I hope John Weitzel enjoys his time in office.

We have so much to discuss in the months ahead.

We are still a force for good in the cricketing world, we should move forward with a degree of confidence.

Ken Lake MBE

General Secretary

THE DAVID ENGLISH U13 COMPETITION

The David English Cup Final

U13 Report 2024

King Edward’s School Birmingham 153 all out off 34.3 overs

Epsom College 157 for 7 off 32.5 overs

Epsom College win by 3 wickets

The 27[th] final of this competition took place in the fine surroundings of Oakham School at the very picturesque Wilson Ground. King Edward’s had navigated a very tricky route to the final whilst we knew plenty about Epsom College, after their triumph in the Inspiresport U15 final at the same venue last year.

Whilst the U13 final is a 35 over affair, as opposed to the 40 overs in the U15 equivalent, there is still a requirement to bat properly and to show good shot selection to ensure that a decent score is put on the board and the overs are fully utilised.

King Edward’s batted first and, whilst both openers went relatively cheaply, Michael Watson [skipper and keeper] and Rishi Sinha made significant contributions in the middle of the order, scoring 39 and 27 respectively. Aditya Solanki [22] and Aarya Yallapa [12] made starts but failed to convert. Unfortunately, no one else reached double figures and the innings rather petered out. In fact, King Edward’s were grateful of the total in the extras column which came to 24, including 17 wides! The wickets were fairly evenly spread around the Epsom College bowling attack. Spencer Braithwaite led the way with 3 for 16 and was well backed up by Dheer Rav [2 for 15] and Kit Kanendran [2 for 15]. In summary Epsom College required 154 to win at 4.4 an over.

King Edward’s got off to an excellent start, with Rishi Sinha dismissing Dheer Ray for 0. Tom Hooke wasn’t around for much longer; the same bowler dismissed him for just 4. Fortunately for Epsom, Dev Vaidya held the innings together with a very composed 45. After his excellent spell of bowling, Spencer Braithwaite also contributed significantly with the bat. His calm and composed innings of 50 not out proved pivotal, with the winning runs coming in the 33[rd] over for the loss of 7 wickets.

As far as the bowling was concerned, the wickets were spread amongst 5 bowlers, with Rishi Sinha and Thomas Brennan taking two apiece. Once again, extras played a part, being third top scorer at 22! This final had certainly been a closer encounter than the previous day’s U15 final, with the contribution of Epsom’s Spencer Braithwaite with both bat and ball being the difference between the two sides.

Huge thanks go to the umpires, scorers and officials. As ever, the staff from Oakham School were the perfect hosts. The players from both teams had been a credit to their respective schools in what had been a competitive game of cricket.

INSPIRESPORT U15 ONE DAY CUP COMPETITION

The ESCA One Day Cup Final

U15 Report 2024

Scarborough College 305 for 4 off 40 overs

Millfield School 237 all out off 37.3 overs

Scarborough College win by 62 runs

After an early arrival, the teams were certainly well prepared for the 11am start. Both schools had navigated tricky paths to the final and it was to be hoped that a far more competitive affair would ensue, after the very one-sided encounter of 2023. The intimate setting of the Wilson Field provided the perfect setting for this prestigious match.

Scarborough College had plenty of depth to its team, so it came as no surprise when they won the toss and elected to bat. They didn’t get off to the best of starts, losing a wicket in the first over. However, bat then dominated ball for much of the remainder of the innings. The second wicket put on 98 before Samuel Pearson Hodgson was dismissed for a well deserved half century. Skipper, Ben Squires, batted beautifully for a superb 89. However, it was Aminda Weerosooriya who took things to another level with an explosive 98 not out, hitting the ball to all parts of the ground. The final total of 305 for 4 would clearly provide the opposition with a huge challenge; there were some very tired Millfield fielders who came off at the close of the innings! Nearly all of the bowlers went for over 6 an over in what had been a chastening experience. On a positive note, Caden Hughes stuck at the task well and took 1 for 44 in his full allocation of 8 overs, including the solitary maiden of the innings!

The Millfield reply would require a very positive start and both openers were up for the challenge. Louie Lawrence [44] and the skipper, Hanson Martin, put on 74 for the first wicket in 9.4 overs. They certainly laid the foundations, and it was now down to the middle order to ‘step up to the plate’. Charlie Ward too the challenge to Scarborough and fell just two short of his half century. However, as the run rate required increased, wickets started to fall at a regular rate and, in spite of the efforts of couple of the tailenders, Millfield were bowled out for 243 inside 38 overs, thereby losing by 62 runs. The indomitable Aminda Weerosooriya was the pick of the Scarborough bowlers, taking 3 for 35 off his 8 overs. Thomas Hiley also played a major role with his 3 for 53. The overall performance from Scarborough College was as impressive a performance as anyone had seen in one of these finals and they were deserved winners.

The Most Valuable Player went Scarborough College’s Aminda Weerosooriya for his major contributions with both bat and ball. Thanks go to the umpires, scorers, officials and splendid Oakham hosts for providing the youngsters from both teams with such a memorable experience in their cricket development.

ESCA T20 FINALS

ESCA / ECB T20 Finals

U15 Report 2024

On a glorious early September day, at the hugely picturesque setting of the Arundel Castle ground, the four competing schools competed for the title of ‘national champions’ in this, the 18[th] year of the competition. As is always the way at the start of a new school year, there is inevitably a slight element of luck, regarding selection of the teams, due to the competing influences of other sports and activities.

The first semi-final saw Scarborough College win the toss and field first against Shrewsbury School, as the regional winners from the North and the Midlands got proceedings underway. The opening partnership of O’Connor and Amstell laid the foundations well, putting on 32 in the first 6 overs, before the fall of the first wicket. Two batsmen made significant contributions, namely Milburn [52] and Crick [58 not out]. The final total of 146 for 7 was a very decent return, without being out of reach. Barard was the pick of the Shrewsbury bowlers, taking 3 for 20, whilst Ling [2 for 27] and Myrddin-Evans [2 for 19] provided able assistance. In reply, Shrewsbury made a promising start and were 41 for 1 after the powerplay. However, a very impressive spell of spin by Abayakoon made inroads into the middle order and his 3 for 21 proved crucial. The final total of 136 for 6 was a valiant effort but fell 10 runs short of the required total.

The second semi-final between Harrow School and King’s College, Taunton was slightly less competitive; King’s College won the toss and chose to field. This decision ended up backfiring, as, as both Harrow openers put on 110 for the first wicket! Attfield led the way with 62 and Nicholson provided great support [38]. The final total of 161 for 4 was always likely to provide a serious challenge. King’s College got off to a disastrous star and were 23 for 5 after in the powerplay. Former Exeter School pupil, Alex Tipper, played a super knock with a belligerent 54. However, his dismissal in the 12[th] over effectively sealed the game and Harrow ended up winning by 45 runs.

In the final, Harrow won the toss and batted. This was partly due to the likelihood of the light becoming ‘dimpsy’ in the latter stages of the game. Harrow seemed to step up a gear and really profited from the powerplay, scoring 50 with the loss of only 2 wickets. The middle order then built on these excellent foundations and the skipper, Rawal [44], and Stabb [48] played major roles in a formidable final total of 191 for 8. O’Connor was the pick of the Scarborough bowlers, taking 3 for 24. In reply, Scarborough College put up a valiant effort, but ended up finishing 59 runs short. O’Connor [36] and Amstell [27] led the way with the bat, whilst the wickets were shared amongst 5 Harrow bowlers.

In fading light, a very cordial presentation took place in front of the pavilion to recognise the efforts of all the players and the officials. Thanks go to all the staff at the ground at Arundel Castle for all their hard work, in providing us with the opportunity to play at a venue, which is amongst the most characterful in the country.
