Ahh…the AGM looms, which means it’s time to take stock, retrace our last year, and provide an account of our doings…read on…

Yes!! Another normal year--- I know that still feels like tempting fate, but true enough. No shut downs/ serious infection control measures/ social distancing/ etc, etc…Indeed as normal as it gets for us….almost…

All our usuals: Halloween/ Xmas including parties (brille costumes-shout out to the parents), and crafts. Remember the lamps made from milk bottles???!! Lighting up Bonfire Night with sparklers. Chinese New Year (eating with chop sticks AND a dragon dance with MUSIC!! Shout out to Mr & Mrs Otter-sooo much more sophisticated than banging old saucepans!!) Pancakes (which looked alarmingly like Cornish pasties when ‘loaded’ with sweets). The Easter Hunt, choc eggs, homemade choc baskets filled with mini eggs & an Easter egg to go with…picking up a theme here?? Mother’s/Father’s Day crafting attempts. (Junk modelling is just soo much easier, far more messy, but definitely easier!!) St George’s Day-where the Cherubs discovered George wasn’t, in fact, beatified for scoring goals in the English football team…I know-who knew??!!

This past year we’ve also looked at more personal aspects of life, such as personal hygiene, diet, physical and mental health. We drew around a child asking groups to put pictures of internal organs on the figure…..hmmm…very interesting…..more disconcerting really…We also looked at differential abilities. The Cherubs had a ball trying to navigate around an obstacle course using wheelchairs/crutches/walkers/being blind folded/etc. Morris Dancing has not proved our greatest hour. But we’re now dab hands at twirling hankies and banging sticks together without hospitalisation—Go Us!! Our community effort of late is to ‘dust’ our local Parish Church. Lots of energy with no real output!! Ahh…bless.. Last Nov we marked Remembrance Day.

As our cohort is Key Stage 1 we find it more meaningful to gather their own families stories around times of conflict. The breadth of shared experience across the years has been nothing short of breathtaking. Everything from VC’s to just missed being hit by the 1st Doodlebug to land in Britian, to taking part in the Warsaw uprising in 1944, after escaping slave farm labouring in Germany and walking back home to Poland, to surviving being shot in the trenches in WW1 due to the pocket Bible in their chest pocket. All very humbling.

Last Sept we reinstated The Sleepover…sleeping wasn’t our over-riding experience of this activity, you understand. Still the Cherubs got to do lots of fun stuff from breadmaking/doing their own washing up/simple tent pitching/knot making/playing conkers/bug hotel building/campfire singing/camp doughnut production…AND STILL they weren’t tired!!!!! All earned badges well deserved-esp the Leaders!!

Big shout out to all the Leaders/Helpers, and, to our Cherubs & to their parents for all your ongoing support. Here’s to next year and more FUN & FRIENDS

Cubs

We had a great year in Cubs we enjoyed the local area and gave the cubs new experiences within the hut and the local area. Our numbers have stayed stable over the last year between 15 and 18 Cubs, which is a good number for the hut of our size, but we would always welcome more

We have joined in with as many District events as we can, including Bowling, the Remembrance Day Night Hike, Athletics at the County Ground and Scrap Heap Challenge, which all have been great fun as well as meeting Cubs from other packs.

The Cubs have all been working hard towards their Silver awards, as well as the activity badges using our hut and local resources to complete these, we have completed local walks, cycling, gardening crafts, experiments and experiences within our local area including visiting local services.

We have also started to look at our local environment with our ongoing work on the Cub garden and completion of litter picks in and around Rodbourne Cheney.

As a pack, we managed to complete a camp at Woodhouse Park, where did some special activities including Abseiling, Leap of faith, Archery and a Mud run which the kids loved as well as the big kids, the weather was great and we shared the site with our friends from Ashton Keynes. Later in the year we joined the Scouts and had a fun packed weekend at PGL in Liddington. I know the kids had a great time.

Just before Christmas we enjoyed a spell on the stage, with the return of the Swindon Gang Show as usual, the leaders helped back stage and with the scenery. Well done to all the Cubs and Scouts from Rodbourne Cheney for taking part and watching the show. Well done to the following Cubs who achieved their Silver awards, Samuel, Chloe, Sebastian and Nicholas,

Good Luck to the Cubs who have moved onto Scouts, hopefully the grounding we have given you in Cubs will set you on a new adventure in Scouts.

All these activities take a lot of organisation and it would not be so much fun for the leaders if we didn’t have such a great team within 1[st] Rodbourne Cheney, so a big thanks to Phil, Kim, Nelly, Ian, Molly, Kyra and Izzie.

Scouts

The Scouts have had a fun packed year doing lots of different activities.

They started the year spending a lot of time outdoors preparing for camp learning how to put up the patrol tents and fire lighting. They had an overnight stay at the hall before setting off early on a hot sunny Saturday to walk part of the Southwest coastal path. This year’s week camp, the first since pre covid was to Broadstone Warren. A great week was had by all, and we even visited Pooh’s house and played Pooh sticks. They also visited the fire station learning all the fire safety and what the fire brigade does, and even got to play with the water hoses.

After the long-awaited summer holiday when they came back they learnt some traditional scout skills like doing the flag, map reading and knots. Along with the Cubs they went on a long weekend to PGL Liddington doing a lot of fun activities and making memories. In the later part of the year the some of the Scouts took part in Swindon Gang Show at the Wyvern theatre. Where they sang did sketches and even flew in a rocket. Lots of the leaders were working behind the scenes.

For the end of 2023 the Scouts did their usual sleepover followed by delivering of Christmas cards. The Friday we went to Freedog to have a go in the Freedog arena. Then for a nice walk back to the hall for some food. The next day after hardly any sleep they and after they delivered a couple of rounds of Scout Post they had a scrummy Full English breakfast cooked by Sarah. At start of 2024 Ian had left the country so the scouts did lots of craft, as Ian doesn’t like it. They also made some bird boxes, thanks Phil for all your work on these.

Other activities in which the Scouts participated throughout the year was cooking on a budget, board games, fire lighting, sleepover before Jott with some delicious homemade toastie on the fire and a lot more fun and games especially with water before summer. This would not have happened without the leaders who are Athen, Amelia, Brad, Eloise, Ian, Isaac and Sarah.

Group report

All sections have been running a full active programme offering the youngsters a variety of activities. Both inside the hall and out and about also joining in with other groups in the district. The groups youth membership is up by 15% on last year which is a credit to all the leaders. During the summer of 2023 the group had two members attend the world Jamboree in South Korea, one on the international service team and one as a participant. Both had an amazing time even if it was different than what they was expecting.

I would like to thank everyone who helped out at the Lydiard Fireworks and with the Swindon Scout Post. This brings in a lot of money to help with the groups running costs. Over the last year the Scout association has been making some changes in the background. The first change is we have moved away from having an executive committee to having a board of trustees. The way the leadership team operates is also being changed, but all of these changes will have no effect on the youngsters and the amazing programme the leaders offer.

I would like to thank all the trustees for their hard work they do behind the scenes. And to the brilliant leadership team at 1[st] Rodbourne Cheney, without their hard work and dedication the group would not be where it is today.

Chairperson’s Report

It has been another great year in Scouting at 1[st] Rodbourne, I think all the volunteers will agree that we are now fully back in our stride, leading the young people in Education, Adventure and Discovery activities.

The Trustees have been meeting as usual and ensuring that all that needs to be done to run the group, can be done. Also, all the mundane behind the scenes stuff is paid for, maintained, acquired all on budget.

As I do every year, I would like to thank all the volunteers, who give up their time for 1[st] Rodbourne and invite any of you out in the audience to come and join us, you may have a skill we need, or you could train with us.

I am honoured to have been able to join this organisation for a few years and it has been my privilege to work with them’
