It gives me a great amount of satisfaction to report to you that things are about as back to normal as they will get. The usual trials and tribulations have returned with much appreciation. My first job is to thank everyone involved in the running, helping, supporting, or just turning up at the right time at 1[st] Rodbourne, we need you all to keep functioning. A quick sidebar at this point to say, if you feel you could do more, please say and we can suggest a way you can help further. I would also like to thank Ian Appleby for taking on the role of Group Scout Lead (temporary, although we all hope he will learn to love it and take on the role permanently) I am sure it has been a lot more work for no more credit. I would also like to thank Marlene Blackwell who in the past two years has hunted out many a grant to ensure our accounts stay in the black and is always on the lookout for ways to save money. Obviously, there are many of you doing sterling work so once again thank you all. For those of you who have cast your eyes over the accounts will see that they are quite healthy at present, but you may be wondering why we had to put up the sub’s, this is something that was going to happen pre pandemic but we at the Exec committee decided to put off. Sub’s need to cover the annual running costs of the group including building running costs, capitation, badges resources, the list goes on. The funds we have in hand now are already being put to good use improving this venue, you will see a lot of improvements in the next year. I would like to thank everyone who turns up once a month to take part in the executive committee and tenders their opinion. Finally, I would like to say thank you all for turning up at the 2022 AGM, anyone interested Keith Hooker is doing a guided tour of the new boiler. J M Dance Exec Chair ## **Group Report** After 22 years of dedicated service, firstly as Scouter in charge then finally taking the official title as Group Scout Leader in 2016 Phil decided to take a step back. Phil has not left the group but is still carrying on with Cubs. I would like to thank Phil for all the hard work he has put into running the group, and hope he enjoys being at the grass roots of what we are here for. Since the lifting of restrictions each section has gradually got back to some kind of normality. Following the guidance has sometimes made things challenging, but all leaders have done a fantastic job making sure activities are run safely. As you see from the section reports there have been lots of brilliant activities and badges awarded Both the Beavers and Cubs numbers are now on the increase and Scouts are running about the same. Due to the pandemic we had to postpone our trip to Kandersteg from August 2021 to August 2022. Unfortunately, that meant due to age and other commitments we lost a few. Luckily this meant we could reopen it back up to those who was not eligible and new members. This should be an amazing experience for all those attending. I would like to thank all the members on the executive committee who do a brilliant job behind the scenes. And to all the leaders who without their time, effort, and enthusiasm we would not be able to offer Scouting to our members. Ian Appleby Acting Group Scout Leader ## **Beaver Report** Well….a more usual year…of sorts anyway…emerging from Zoom for our leaders’ meetings into full blown FACE-to-FACE meetings with the kids….WOW!!! AND…. without masks…shhhuussshhh…don’t say that too loudly….it’s taken the best part of 2 years. But we’re now back. All very strange looking back… We didn’t kick off til May, as all our Beaver Leadership hadn’t been double jabbed til then. Our numbers had really dropped to under 10, but great to see those that returned, and to wish those that had graduated to cubs well on their way. Luckily, all but one of our Leaders could return. Only Amanda has had to step down for very understandable health reasons. We all miss Her, and her contribution to our team effort. Although our usual forays into District/National events have been curtailed, we’ve tried to maintain our normal weekly activities, which it must be said, has got easier to achieve since lockdown has eased. Our usuals which punctuate our year have returned with a flourish. Mother’s/Father’s Day, Pancake Day, Baden Powell Day, Easter all proved a big hit! Crafts &/or eating always goes down well!!! Sparklers around Nov 5[th] , along with fire safety…one suspects the sparklers are remembered better. Morris dancing…well almost, anyway…Our Chinese New Year Dragon Dance was VASTLY IMPROOVED!!! Yes!! Do not adjust your eyes!! It turns out standing on the outside of the ‘dragon’ (large, tasselled sheet) magically worked!! Who knew…thank-you covid for making that happen!! We also completed some rarer evenings. This year saw Beavers celebrating 35 years of existence, We commemorated the event with making & painting clay dishes. We looked at Advent with some of its traditions. We had a Jewish evening looking at the Hebrew alphabet, and some artifacts common in Jewish culture. The kids got to try some unleavened bread (crackers) with date/bee’s honies. Back in February, we checked out the real...well… 1 of the contenders, which is St. Valentine. We also checked out the real St. George. A Roman soldier…and not England’s best ever football goal scorer…..still at least a dragon appears in the myth!!! Over lockdown, our Higher Powers got their thinking caps on and came up with new badges,,,I know- who saw THAT coming??!!?? So that is why we’ve made money boxes, started collecting, and have embarked on our crisp packet drive. We did look at the difference between needs & wants….hmmm…you might want to supervise any packing of ANYTHING from book bags to suitcases…just saying…you’re welcome… As we could not engage with our, now infamous Xmas productions, we’ve busied our Cherubs with decoration production & partying!! Always a very good plan B. Halloween’s also another excuse for partyville. The costumes were just AMAZING!! Well done families!! As expected, the costumes were the real stars of the night!! We’ve awarded 2 Bronze Chief Scout Badges to Samuel & Chloe. A huge achievement for them— well done!! We end the reviewed year with our numbers now up to more normal numbers. We feel on a more regular keel regards protocols and look forward to reembracing wider Scouting events. All our leadership want to extend our thanks to the families of our youth members. Your support and trust in ourselves, our programmes, & the Scouting Movement allow us to do what we do. ## **Cub Report** It has been great getting back into Scouting following the Pandemic; we did take a hit on numbers, with a large number of our Cubs moving onto Scouts. Last year I indicated that we had dropped to 16 Cubs, this eventually went down to 6 Cubs, but has been steadily rising back to 16, but we have now got issues with getting uniform, especially larger sizes, so if you have a uniform that you don’t need we would be happy to recycle it. We have tried to keep our programme going whilst staying within the guidelines, this has included creating a small garden at the front of the hut, we managed to grow Sunflowers and build a bughouse to improve our environment as well as litter picking within the local area. We have also managed to complete some district activities, which included Bowling and a night hike. As a pack, we have not managed to complete a camp due to numbers, so we had a weekend camp at the hut. This included fire lighting, tent erecting, cooking and a Camp Fire including twists, followed by a hike on Sunday along the Canal to Moulden Hill and back to the hut, the weather was great, I think the kids had a great time, but not sure if they liked the Stew we had for tea. Good Luck to the Cubs who have moved onto Scouts, including Callum, Harry, Oscar, Thomas, James, Abir and Matilda. All these activities take a lot of organisation and it would not be so much fun for the leaders if we didn’t have such a great team within 1[st] Rodbourne Cheney, so a big thanks to Phil, Kim, Nelly, Ian, Simon, Molly and Lizzie. ## **Scout Report** First time I have had to write the report, so I’ll keep it short and sweet. With KISC on the horizon we haven’t done the annual week camp this year, but did get away to Penwood shortly after Easter, sharing the site with the Cubs, it was a really great weekend to ease (almost) everyone back in to being under canvas. With Archery, Tomahawks, Frisbee golf, haybox pizzas and wide games – accompanied by a great campfire. The older scouts managed to get in their Expedition challenge badge in December. chilly walking to their overnight stop at hut finishing with a lovely breakfast roll at Chiseldon. The Christmas party this year was back to normal with crazy games, a movie and some pizza, the winner for the yearly Leaders snoring competition is still undecided. With Covid guidelines slowly becoming a distant memory it was a triumphant return to maskless face to face scouting. Skills days, water games, night hikes with fencing and climbing thrown in for good measure, bringing us in to May, with as successful JOTT (jamboree on the trail) with a nice circular route at Avebury and Silbury hill. From April last year we’ve given out just shy of a hundred badges, include a Chief Scout Gold for Maddy Cooper, as you all know , a lot of hard work goes in to gaining this award so well done. Thanks go to Ian, Athen, Sarah, Isaac, Amelia and Eloise for all their hard work Brad ## **Treasurers Report Financial year 2021-2022** ## Financial Summary With face-to-face meetings resuming during the fiscal year, subscriptions, although not as high as pre-covid, returned to a more realistic figure. In addition, we also benefitted from further covid support grants. Overall, the Group had an in-year surplus of £13,994.52 which, in the main, is attributable to the in-year balance of the Kandersteg planned trip (£6,617.16) and the balance remaining from the support grants. ## Receipts Grants: We were fortunate this year to have received a business restart grant of £8,000 together with three smaller support grants totaling £6,764. These enabled us to maintain the scout building and plan for further improvements. Subscriptions: Nearly all payments for Cubs and Scouts are now made through the Scouts online manager using GoCardless. Of the £6,043 subscriptions received during the year, over a third of this - £2,200 – was paid as capitation to the Swindon North District Scout Association. Gift Aid: As a charity we can claim Gift Aid on your subscription fees which gives us an extra 25% income; the Executive Committee have agreed to use such funds for major purchases which benefit all sections. The Group reclaimed £1,413.74 in this fiscal year, so please make sure you complete the Gift Aid declaration form, always of course provided that you pay income tax at least equivalent to the value of the gift aid against the membership fee. Activities: Scouts and their leaders have continued to make payments towards the planned Kandersteg trip (£7,647.16). Scout Post resumed this year giving income of £1,934.54 less associated expenditure of £858.42. Rent income: £1,435 received during the year from 1[st] Moredon Brownies and Wolf Explorer Pack for use of the premises. ## **Payments** Premises: The cost of ownership of the land and buildings gave combined premises costs for the year of £12,768.32, up from £5,741.45 in 2020/2021. Activities: Youth programme and activities amounted to £2,569.86. Admin Expenses: Admin expenses came to £426.94. ## **Reserves** Cash/Bank funds held at year end amounted to £49,817.00; of which £17,655.74 is held in respect of the Kandersteg trip, with £7k committed to commencing the fitting of new fire doors in the scout hall and store to improve security and safety for members and leaders alike. (Overall costs for renewing fire doors will be £17.5k at current costs). Reserves Policy: It is the intention of the 1[st] Rodbourne Cheney Scout Group Trustees to continue to hold a reasonable level of reserves to provide a sound financial basis for the development and running of scouting within the Group. In particular for the upkeep and repair of the hall, and to improve facilities.
