Major actvites and achievements during the 12-month period to 31st December 2023

The Trustee meeting, renamed Sept 23, met five times during the year. The Group meets the Charity Commission's public benefit criteria under both the advancement of education and the advancement of citizenship or community development headings. The Group was led by Craig Edwards as Group Scout Leader who has taken on the role on a permanent basis.

The number of members in the Group on 31st January 2023 was (with 2022 numbers in brackets) Beaver Scouts 44 (54) Cub Scouts 58 (61), Scouts 39 (49), Active Support, 85 (53 also hold another role, Inc. leaders.) TOTAL 226. In addition, there are 23 (16) members and 4 (7) Leaders in the Drake Explorer Scout Unit, who are registered with Crawley District and linked by a Partnership Agreement to the Group. Youth sections have a reasonable balance of girls and boys. In September ’23 the group decided to investigate and then progress establishing Squirrels (Aged 4-6) to grow the group and provide scouting opportunities to those currently on our waiting list.

There were some events early in the year with winter camps in January. The Group had a service for Mothering Sunday and filled St Margaret’s Church for the Harvest Thanksgiving, Remembrance Sunday, and the Group Carol Service. The Group attended District St Georges day celebration. The Group held a full summer programme of paddle sport sessions on Tilgate Lake and various rivers. Shooting and climbing occurred monthly during term time.

Both Sycamore and Chestnut Beaver Colonies met throughout term time. Sycamore Leaders are Karen Pitt, Ruth Glasse, Alan Seymour and Sarah Smith (from January). Chestnut Leaders are Shona Graves, Marianne Corney, Toby Russell-O'Reilly, Millie Corney and Megan Whitfield (from June). Both Colonies were assisted by Young Leaders, Scarlett Kennedy (until July), Tilly PelhamWheeler (from October), Harry Everley (from September) and Summer Clarkson-Taylor (from October), Emily Hamshaw and Abigail Stevens (until July) and Charlotte Whitfield (from November). Both Colonies took part in the County event, GoBeavers23. Sycamore held their summer camp at Polyapes Scout Camp Site and Chestnut held their camp at Boidier Hurst Scout Camp Site. Both winter camps were held at Copthorne Scout Hall. Sycamore finished the year with 24 Beavers and attained 7 Chief Scout Bronze Awards

and Chestnut Colony finished with 20 Beavers and attained 8 Chief Scout Bronze Awards.

The Cub Scouts meet on Mondays (Tiger Pack) and Wednesdays (Lion Pack) in term time. Tiger Cubs leaders are Nicole Le Monnier and Steve Corney assisted by Richard Oram, Chloe Mayhew, David Gould, Molly and Tilly Mitchell as well as we have two young leaders Nathan Head and Isibeal Oram. Tiger Cubs as always have a traditional scouting programme with their main camp for all and a Senior camp (for the older cubs) learning how to survive by maintaining their own fire, cooking on it as well as using tools to prepare wood for the fire and learning to whittle. We had a busy programme with outdoor activities in the summer months and indoor programme for the colder darker months including our well attended Chippie Hike. We worked on Cubs attaining their Challenge badges, Activity and Staged badges working towards their Silver Awards before they moved on to Scouts through a varied programme and events we planned with them.

In 2023 the Tiger Cubs worked on their Scientist and Environmental badges which included a litter pick around Ifield shops. They learnt how to read a map and find and know the symbols and what they mean, learned to tie some basic knots, made mug cakes, a hot drink and ironed their scarves. We had visitors from the community police who brought with them an equipped van setting off the blues and two’s as well as ladies from a local Irish dancing troop to introduce them to dancing. We had a rope making evening to sign off their pioneer badge where they tried out various ways of making rope and took part in our annual sponsored event this year a sponsored wheels around Furnace Green Park on a variety of cycles, scooters and a Cub on roller skates. In 2023 we had 5 achieve their Silver Awards.

Lion Pack lead by Dominic Smith and assisted by Michael Glasse, Tim Gusterson, Claire Fyffe, Liz Peyton, Sarah Loveland and Selina Parris with occasional helper Caroline Staples and Young Leader, Ben Chapman. Lion Cubs ran a varied programme awarding many badges, had trips to the rugby club, dance class and ambulance station. Lion Cubs also completed their entertainer badge with performances from the cubs and had a great team building exercise by playing laser tag. We made a gift for mothers on Mother’s Day, learnt knots and started fires. Both packs took part in the district craft day and conker competition and Dougie from Lion Cubs was declared district winner, while all Cubs showed great sportsmanship. Lion Cubs ran their biggest ever winter camp, a senior Cub camp and a three-night summer camp and were awarded 4 Chief Scout Silver Awards.

Atlantic troop meet every Tuesday in term time. The leadership team consists of James Wright, Tom Wood, Sinead Madden, Laura Flannigan, Ben Carter, and Russ Howard ably supported by our two young leaders. We continued to run a diverse program focusing on completing a number of the challenge badges, working towards the Gold Award. We included multiple other activities including climbing, water sports and many others. We have once again run a varied selection of camps including Cycle Camp, Log Cabin Camp, Survival Camp and of course Summer Camp which was held on Dartmoor. We run the same program as Pacific troop, and all of our camps are joint camps. We occasionally have joint meetings with Pacific. Moving forward we continue to deliver an interesting program working towards achieving awards for the Scouts.

Pacific Scouts met every Friday evening in term time apart from an occasional joint meeting with Atlantic Scouts on a Tuesday. The leadership team consists of Russell Howard, Lauren Head, Simon Kilcoyne and Benjamin Carter with occasional help from the Atlantic troop leaders. The programme, which is planned in conjunction with the Atlantic troop, has focused on a good mix of activity types during the meetings aimed at helping the Scouts achieving a challenge badge per term. As far as camps there have been again a good mix from Survival Camp at Stanford to Summer Camp in Dartmoor, Log Cabin camp to Cycle camp. This year we are continuing to deliver the programme in the same manner with Cycle camp instead of Theme Park camp.

Mark Haymes and Luke Winstanley are currently leading the Drake Explorer Unit, assisted by Katie Sexton and Hannah Muller. At present we have 23 Explorers in our membership. The main activity for last year was a camp in the Yorkshire Dales jointly with Shackleton ESU. It was a rather eventful camp and our young people participated in several adventurous activities, including mountain biking, canoeing and hill walking. In October we took a minibus full of Explorers and older Scouts to South Wales for a few days climbing and hill walking in Bannau Brycheiniog. It was soggy at times, especially when the young people got to walk behind a waterfall, but a lot of fun and gave a great training opportunity to future Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) and Chief Scout/King’s Scout Awards expeditions. In December our final meeting was a Swedish luciatåg to help us prepare for our coming expedition. Explorer Scout financial accounts are incorporated into the District Accounts and are not represented at 2nd Ifield. At the end of 2023, we are in good financial health for the coming year.

The Scout Active Support Unit (SASU) is led by Diana Parisi who took on the role of SASU manager in Jan 2023, along with Damien Scott and Maja Jasko as SASU Co-ordinators. There are 85 members of which 53 also hold another scouting role. 2023 has been a busy year including supporting a large variety of activities for the group District and County. During these activities SASU members managed to meet socially and to plan future events,

SASU members supported or arranged the following events Fundraising BBQ's, church services, Coronation capers, Water camp, SASU camp, Group camp, St. Georges ball, pub social, monopoly run, Downsman Hike, AGM, Airhop sleepover, Bisley, May fayre set up and parade, working parties, explorers Yorkshire expedition, Fireworks, Gillwell reunion, Remembrance Sunday, quiz night, SASU picnic at Tilgate and our annual Christmas Dinner. Although we did not meet as a unit as regularly as we would have liked, a lot of support was given to the young people’s sections. We also provided a full summer paddle sport season, the weekly Group’s shooting and monthly climbing and shooting sessions. The main fundraising events of the year were fireworks and BBQs at Brinsbury College and Our Lady Queen of Heaven School and the Acorn Kitchen during climbing and shooting sessions. Admin support provided by Theresa Ayres.

The HQ is owned by the Group, on land in Friston Walk, Ifield, leased from Crawley Borough Council. The Group is a trust established under its rules that are common to all Scout Groups. Trustees are appointed in accordance with the Policy, Organisation & Rules of the Scout Association. The accounts have been drawn up on a receipts and payments basis consistent with previous

years.

Approved by the trustees on 17[th] April 2024 and signed on their behalf by David Clipperton (Chairman) and Craig Edwards (GSL) via email post Trustee Meeting.
